Welcome to Cannon Street Class

Class Teacher: Mr C Grundey (Year Group Lead)

Teaching Assistant: Miss Campbell

Homework:

Handed out on Fridays,

Returned by Wednesday,

Please remember that homework is an important building stone in the child’s learning and development. The children will receive Dojo-Points for completed homework as well as particularly outstanding contributions.

Daily Reading:

To help further develop the children’s reading and academic development, please support and encourage the children to read daily for at least 10 minutes. This daily reading should then be recorded (title + pages) in the Learning Diary. We would kindly ask parents to sign/initial the record.

The children will receive Dojo-Points for daily reading.

Recommended reading books for Year 5:

Best Books for Year 5 | Ages 9-10 | BooksForTopics

Expertly selected books for 9 and 10 year old children (lovereading4kids.co.uk)

Reading Activities:

Once the children have completed reading a book, they then choose an activity related to the book (e.g. book-review, letter to the author, sequel, character profile, alternative cover etc.). This activity is completed in the child’s Reading Journal. Our wonderful teaching assistants will then check, feedback and record the completion of these activities.

The children will receive multiple Dojo-Points to reward exceptional work.

PE:

Our current P.E. days are Tuesday (Miss Handley) and Wednesday (Mr Grundey).

First week of January 2021 – distance learning

January 3, 2021

Dear all,

We are wishing you a very happy, healthy, successful and fulfilling New Year.

Sadly, we will not be seeing each other on a daily basis as yet. However, learning will still take place via Google Classroom.

Please check Google Classroom on Sunday evening, when we will outline the timetable for the following week. Then, on a daily basis, we will upload/release the lessons. During the first two days of the coming week (beginning 4th January 2021), we will be mainly using links and resources from the Oak National Academy, however, from Wednesday, we would like to focus on what we would be learning at school as if it was open.

We will upload the daily lessons as slides (.pdf) and the accompanying worksheets as a .doc and .pdf. Sometimes, a video or video-link will support the lesson slides. If the work is completed on an electronic device, please use the .doc and submit it back to us as a Google Document. Should you wish to print the sheets (or in cases where conversions have confused the formatting of the document) please refer to the .pdf.

While one half of our team will be working with the children in school, the other half will be creating, monitoring and trouble-shooting the Google Classroom content. Should a student have any relevant questions regarding the work, please contact us via the Year-Group-Email (year5@howard.croydon.sch.uk) or the comment feature in Google Classroom. We will aim to respond as quickly as possible.

We thank you all so much for your understanding and support. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to support you and the children in their learning at home.

Have a safe week.

Your Year 5 team

National Doodle Day

September 26, 2020

Happy Weekend to all of our families,

As part of our learning today, we found out about “National Doodle Day” which is a fundraising day to educate and support the work of Epilepsy.org. We read the story “I’m not just a scribble …” and then created our very own doodles.
