- after which we will will first identify the features of a Film-Review.
- Then we will improve a given mediocre Film-Review in order to lift it to Year 5+ standard.
Maths:

Tuesdsay 12th November 2019 – BFI Peter Rabbit at VUE Purley Way
English – Writing
On Monday the children will up level their sentences about Autumn. Up levelling is a process by which the children improve their sentences. |
Children can up level their sentences by using adventurous adjectives, creating and tone and using similes. On Tuesday the children will create interesting sound effects using their knowledge of onomatopoeia.
On Thursday, the children will be creating powerful pictures with their words. On Friday the children will plan an Autumn poem using their knowledge of Autumn. |
We will start a new book called The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl. We will also be learning some new reading skills as a whole class using ERIC. The children will build their repertoire of different reading skills through the year. |

Maths We will continue with the addition and subtraction block.

Week Beginning 10th November
This week our learning will be as follows;
- In mathematics we will continue our work on multiplication and division learning to multiply and divide by 4 and 8.
- In English we will write a review of a short film. We will then plan and write a review of a longer film after our cinema visit.
- In science we will learn about reflective surfaces.
- In topic time we will introduce the Bronze Age.

Year Four Blog Week Beginning 11.11.19
Thank you for all parents who helped their child dress up for an amazing day of History. See the extra blog named Viking Visitor to photos of your children enjoying their learning.
We will be learning:
Maths-We will be subtracting using formal (abstract) methods as we as using concrete and pictorial representations to understand column subtraction.
English-We will be writing our innovated version of the Robin Hood Golden Arrow story.
History-We will be taking a short break from our topic of Anglo-Saxons and Vikings to learn about and celebrate Remembrance Day.
R.E-We will be continuing our unit on discrimination. This topic is also covered in guided reading. Children have a project based homework to complete in their choice of ways.
Year Four-Black History Month Research Homework (to be completed over two week-due in 22nd November)
As you may know, people across the country celebrate Black History Month. For your homework over the following two weeks, we would like you to choose a famous person who has contributed to equality and anti-discrimination and research their life. You can choose how you present this information but should prepare to present what you have found out to your class mates.
Some examples for you to choose from could be: Nelson Mandela, Mary Seacole, Barack Obama, Muhammad Ali or a local personality like Stormzy.
P.E-P.E continues to be on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. One session a week will be outside weather permitting. Children will be asked to join in as this is a curriculum subject however, if they have an injury please write a note to the class teacher and your child will be asked to participate in different ways such as coaching, referring etc. Please provide your child with P.E kit as set out in the school uniform policy.

Maths – We shall be looking at ordering fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with unrelated denominators.
English – Over this half term, our lessons shall be based on our class reading book Goodnight Mister Tom and our topic The Second World War. This week, we shall be using video imagery as a stimulus for our own war poems.
Science – Our topic this half term is Electricity. This week, we shall be looking at planning an investigation and looking at the importance of variables.
PE – Swimming lessons return this week. Our Friday PE sessions will be taught by some local secondary school pupils, as part of our Sports Leader Alliance.
History – We shall be researching about how Croydon was affected during WW2. We will also be visited by Mrs Bakka who will be teaching us all about Walter Tull.
Computing – We shall be continuing to look at online safety this half term.

We continue our learning about poetry. Children will identify the different features of a poem – verses/ stanzas, rhymes, repititive words / phrases, onomatopoeic words, alliteration. They will read a range of poems about fireworks, identify key vocabulary, generate their own word bank, write and edit their own firework poems.

Maths
Children will continue their learning about subtraction. They will use the key vocabulary – subtract, take away, minus, fewer, less and understand how to subtract using different resources – ten frame, part/part whole, number lines etc… They will begin to reason and explain their thinking as well as solve simple problems. Please practise subtraction using number rhymes.
Science
Children will begin to learn about the different types of materials – metal,plastic, fabric, glass, wood, paper etc…They will sort materials into groups on the basis of their properties and begin to distinguish between an object and material from which it is made.
Children will also continue their learning about seasons focusing on Autumn.
We will also investigate – Are taller people older?
Art
Children will develop their skills using different media to create firework pictures.
P.E
Children will continue developing different ways of travelling as well as develop their core strength and balance.
ICT
During ICT sessions, we will be learning to use technology purposefully to create, organise store and retrieve digital content-log on, type name and surname, change font, size, colour and type a sentence using capital letter, space and full stop. Children will watch Hector’s world.
History
We will be celebrating ‘Black History Month’. Our class will be talking about ‘Barack Obama’. Who is he? Why he is special? What did he do? Where did he live?
Phonics
Please continue to practice sound recognition with your child. Encourage them to apply their phonic knowledge every time you read or write with them.
Handwriting
We will be learning to form the numbers correctly and begin to learn the cursive script starting with the letters c, a, o, d.
Homework
Please support your child to do the investigation – Are taller people older?

LITERACY
Book Focus: Whatever Next by Jill Murphy
The children will enjoy this wonderful story about a little bear’s adventure to the moon, developing their understanding of the story through role play activities. We will read and discuss the key events using sequencing vocabulary such as ‘First, Then, Next, Last’ or ‘At the end’.
Phonics: /i/, /n/, /m/ /d/ and /g/
Please keep sound sheet at home and continue to practise saying and writing these sounds every day. As your child continues to learn more letter sounds they may forget the earlier sounds taught so it is important to practise daily recognition and writing (using each of the sound cues eg /a/ - round the apple , down the leaf)
MATHS: This week the children will be learning to:
• explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.
• recognise, create and describe patterns • use mathematical names for ‘flat’ 2D shapes, and mathematical terms to describe shapes
• select a particular named shape
Knowledge and Understanding of the World: The children will begin to learn about aspects of space exploration as they become more familiar with the focus book Whatever Next . Later this week we will also discuss the significance of Remembrance Day .

On Monday the children will go for a nature detective walk in Duppas Hill, whilst there they will observe signs of Autumn. The children will use their senses, thinking about what they see, hear, touch, taste and smell.
On Tuesday the children will begin to understand the structure of a cinquain poem.
On Thursday the children will be thinking about powerful and precise words to describe Autumn.
Children will start with a sentence – red leaves falling and they will be encouraged to up level it.
Red – is there a better hue that would represent the colour?
Falling – how do leaves fall? They twirl, sprinkle, spiral …
Consider using surprising word combinations e.g. leaves dancing, winds shrieking/whispering
Maths We will continue with the addition and subtraction block.
