Southwark Class Update wk beginning 4th June

Literacy-

This week we will be using a video clip-The Lone Robot which you can see below to stimulate our talk for writing skills, cummulating by writing our own alternate ending.

https://www.literacyshed.com/origins.html

Our grammar focus will be expanded noun phrases and using a variety of conjunctions to join sentences.

Maths-We will be completing our statistics work with a focus on the upcoming World Cup and then moving on to refining our written multiplication and division methods. A quick reminder that knowing all the multiplication and division facts to 12×12 is a requirement for year 4 and children who are successful at this practice for short periods at home several times a week alongside their daily Maths lessons. I recommend using the website with games and quizzes below:

Homework over the half term was Mathletics due in on Friday 8th June.

Science-We will be continuing our electricity unit, focusing on electrical safety and making working circuits including switches.

P.E-We will be beginning a tennis unit on Tuesdays. Please double check your child has suitable footwear.

Reminder in the warmer weather your child will still be outside daily for play times, the daily mile and P.E lessons so sunhats and/or sunglasses as well as sun cream are essential.

I.C.T-We will be continuing our work on debugging with a focus on programming our own game.

P.S.H.E-We will be continuing our Apple’s Friends module 4 solving problems independently, focusing on the 4 steps to find a good solution.

Our Learning next week

Our topic for this term is called ”Temples, Tombs and Treasures’ linked to our HISTORY curriculum about Ancient Egypt.

In English, we will continue developing our narrative writing with our text The Firemaker’s Daughter by Phillip Pullman. Next week we will be boxing up the chapter about Lila’s meeting with Razvani the Fire Fiend, innovation one part of the chapter and then writing our own suspense scene. Please feel free to read along with your child. Copies can be bought for £3.99 at the Book People.

In Maths, we will be continuing work on time and using timetables before moving on to statistics, revising bar charts, pictograms and tables. It would be helpful if children could practise telling the time in both analogue and digital and twelve and twenty-four hour time and also using money to improve their coin recognition. Please encourage your child to use Mathletics to revise these skills along with games on free websites like

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/data-handling

Matheletics has been tailored to your child’s ability. If your child is working below age related objectives there are good games and activities for them to try at the following websites:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/measures

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/ks1numeracy.html

http://www.ictgames.com/resources.html

In P.E sessions, we will be continuing  athletics and a dance/aerobics unit. P.E will continue to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please ensure your child has their kit for every lesson. In addition to this we will continue to run the Daily Mile to help promote the fitness of our children.

As I’m sure you all know, reading daily is essential in helping your child progress with reading and writing. Please enjoy reading a range of fun books as well as your child’s school reading books to promote a love for reading. Please remember to write a comment or sign your child’s reading record regularly. Remember that your child can keep a book for as long as they need in order to finish it. We appreciate your support to enable your child to be a fluent and competent reader.

Well done to all children who were awarded a merit card this week, Anomiga and Abi.

Next week is national Walk to School Week. We will be giving children a walk to school diary to complete with daily activities, they will be able to see their progress on a wall chart and there is a prize draw which can be entered by planting the sunflower seeds we will also be sending home. It is recommended that all children are active for at least 60 minutes per day and walking to school can be part of that.

Thank you, as always, for the support you have shown for our royal themed afternoon. The children looked amazing and had lots of fun.

School photos are taking place on Friday 25th May
