Spring 2 – Week 2 – 1st March 2021

… Pinch-punch first of the month, everybody.

Unbelievable, this is the beginning of the third month of the year and the last week (for now) of our home-learning before we will return to school in one week’s time.

A lot of excitement is waiting for us, particularly on Thursday, when we will be celebrating World-Book-Day. Bring your favourite quote (sentence from a story) to our live-session. We will continue with our daily storytelling and you will finally find out, whether Lila will become a true Firework-Maker.

In Maths as well as Science, we are starting a new topic this week. In Music, we will also try something slightly different this week, before Mr Regan returns on the 10th March in school. So, we can’t wait to start. Have a look at our timetable below.

See you soon and have a wonderful week,

Miss Winser, Mrs Verma, Mrs Brown & Mr Grundey

Please continue to attend live lessons every day this week as this will help with the children’s transition back to school. It is also important to keep up with their learning on Google Classroom to ensure fewer gaps in their learning once they return to school. Please note that  Google Classroom will continue to be used for blended learning once the children return to school.

We will provide further information by the end of the week about what to expect for when your child returns to school.

Kind Regards,

The Reception Team

Suggested Week 2 Timetable for Reception Remote Learning

Animal Word lists: Please remember to post a video of your child reading their animal word lists to the KEY WORD LISTS folder on Google Classroom, once they are ready to read the words. When the children return to school, they will receive a certificate for each word list they can read successfully. So keep practising with them and when they are ready, add your video.

WORLD BOOK DAY: Thursday, 4th March

This year our theme is The Masked Reader. You can join in the fun by posting a video of  you and your child wearing a mask and reading one of your favourite stories. Post your video into the Masked Reader Folder on Google Classroom. It will be great fun trying to work out who is behind the mask. You could make and decorate your own mask. We look forward to seeing your creativity in action. The children will receive their £1 book tokens when they return to school. [/dropshadowbox]

Why do we celebrate World Book Day?

World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. The mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.

As World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck, recalls “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”

Spending just 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future success and it’s fun for all involved.

That’s why World Book Day continues to encourage children and young people to read for pleasure through its work with authors, illustrators, publishers, bookshops and libraries.

How are we celebrating World Book Day?

Just because everything is having to be done virtually this year, we still plan to celebrate this great event through arranging a series of fun activities, live sessions with authors and sharing our overall love for reading. It is important to recognise that, at Howard, we celebrate reading for pleasure all throughout the year and not just on this one singular day. Our Year 6s regularly engage in Book Talk, sharing what they like/dislike about books. They also recommend books to their peers and adults.

Parents Workshop

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are very much aware that some of our children are feeling anxious and worried about the current lockdown and pandemic.   To help you support them, we are offering a one-hour workshop that we hope will help you to understand your child’s emotions and give you some practical ideas for supporting them at home.

The workshop will look at:

How the brain works, how it develops in children and how it responds to stress
What anxiety is and what it’s for
Ideas for reducing anxiety and promoting positive thinking

In line with the current restrictions the workshop will be held online and will be presented by Zoe Barkham Manlow, who is the Croydon Education Improvement Officer for health and wellbeing.
