Week Beginning 4th June 2018

Writing

We will be starting a new text this week called Tuesday by David Weisner.

We will be getting to know the story really well and thinking about the kind of text it could be as it has no words!!

As a hook into the story we will be making frogs… I wonder how this could be linked?

Reading

We are still really enjoying Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. We are able to talk about the story & characters and are able to make predictions about what may happen in the text.

We will also be looking at key reading comprehension skills as a whole class using pictures and short passages of text as a stimuli.

Maths

We are finishing off the last of our measurement unit looking at capacity and temperature before moving on to complete our work on Statistics. This will include learning about tally charts, pictograms and block charts. The children’s knowledge of counting in 2s,5s and 10s will support this learning as the information on the pictograms and block charts gets more challenging.

PSHE

We will be continuing with our new module of Zippy’s Friends.

P.E

We are going to be doing tennis skills on a Monday and doing Real PE on Wednesday.

Science

We will be moving on to look at ways we can keep ourselves healthy. This week we will be thinking about a balanced diet.

 Geography

We will be recapping work on the continents and oceans of the world before focusing on the UK and it’s capital cities. We will be using atlases appropriately to find information.

Our grammar focus will be expanded noun phrases and using a variety of conjunctions to join sentences.

Maths-We will be completing our statistics work with a focus on the upcoming World Cup and then moving on to refining our written multiplication and division methods. A quick reminder that knowing all the multiplication and division facts to 12×12 is a requirement for year 4 and children who are successful at this practice for short periods at home several times a week alongside their daily Maths lessons. I recommend using the website with games and quizzes below:

Week commencing 4th June

Enjoy your half term break. Hope you have a lovely holiday and come back ready for the last push towards the end of the year!

Here’s a look ahead to the first week back.

Our topic for this term is called ”Temples, Tombs and Treasures’ linked to our HISTORY curriculum about Ancient Egypt.

Your child has taken home a homework sheet to cover the homework for the whole half term. Please choose  another activity to complete for homework this week. We have had some fantastic work so far! I have attached an electronic copy of the homework below in case the paper copy is lost  Homework-Egyptians

In English, we will continue developing our narrative writing with a short film called Origins; The Story of a Lone Robot in order to develop show not tell methods of writing.

In Maths, we will be starting to look at formal written methods for multiplication and division, so it would be helpful for children to continue to practise their multiplication tables and related division facts. Please encourage your child to use Mathletics to revise these skills.

We have also started to use a mental Maths game called Daily 10 which you can find a link to below

http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

I have also asked those children who are less confident to continue to practise time (including digital, analogue and 24 hour time) and money, including coin recognition, for when we revisit these units.

P.E will continue to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please ensure your child has their kit for every lesson. In addition to this we will continue to run the Daily Mile to help promote the fitness of our children.

As I’m sure you all know, reading daily is essential in helping your child progress with reading and writing. Please enjoy reading a range of fun books as well as your child’s school reading books to promote a love for reading. Please remember to write a comment or sign your child’s reading record regularly. Remember that your child can keep a book for as long as they need in order to finish it. We appreciate your support to enable your child to be a fluent and competent reader.

In Science, children will begin a unit on Electricity.

Please remember that Monday 4th June is an inset day, children return to school on Tuesday 5th June.

Thursday 7th June is Sports Day at Croydon Arena, if you haven’t done so, please return the slip indicating whether your child will be travelling to and from the Arena with the class.
