Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the Phonics workshops on Wednesday. We appreciate your positive feedback and we are glad that you had so much fun learning how to support your child at home with Phonics.
Please note that this week your children will be having balance bike training aimed at improving their balance skills.
Also, please ensure you have completed the online consent form so your child can receive the nasal flu vaccine this Friday 12th October 2018.
Please note that there will not be any Parent evening meetings for Reception children this week. We will inform you of dates for these next term. Only KS1 and KS2 will be having their meetings this week.

LITERACY
Book Focus: Owl Babies by Martin Wadell
Through a shared reading of this classic tale about a family of beautiful owls, the children will learn to recall and retell a story by creating a class story map. They will learn to use vocabulary such as ‘First, Then, Next, Last’ or ‘At the end’, learning actions to help them recall the meaning of these words. They will also learn where to locate information about a book such as the title and author of a book
MATHS

Week Beginning 8th October 2018
In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;
- In mathematics we will be learning to subtract using the column method and to solve problems using subtraction.
- In writing we will write up our version of Stone Age Boy before starting work on instruction writing.
- In reading we read regularly in small groups. We are also enjoying our class book The Queen’s Nose by Dick King-Smith.
- In science we will look at the strength of different magnets.
- In art we will plan a cave painting in preparation for our visit to Get Fired.
Don’t forget our Stone Age Dress up day is this Friday (12th October) and our visit to Get Fired is next Monday (15th October). I am looking forward to meeting those parents who are coming for Parent-Teacher meetings this Wednesday. KF
Week commencing 8th October
Please find an update about what we will be learning in Millennium next week;
English- We will be continuing to read Robin Hood by Marcia Williams. Our focus for this week is retelling a section of the story with actions and boxing up the key events in preparation for writing our own version. We will be moving on to adding our own innovations, concentrating on planning with a coherent plot and strong beginning, middle and end to the story.
Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.
Maths- We are revising place value. We will be moving on to addition and subtraction. We will begin by revising the Year 3 objectives before moving on to adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers with exchanging.
In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.

Topic- Our topic for the Autumn term is Vikings and Anglo- Saxons. We will be learning about the cultures of both the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons. This week we are very excited to have our Viking visitor in school. On Tuesday, all children should dress in costume and will participate in a day long workshop.
Science- Our focus this term is teeth and digestion. We will be looking at the types of teeth and learning about their function.

Mrs Forde will be providing PPA cover on a Thursday morning, teaching RE and Spelling.
Homework- Homework will be set on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday each week. The children will be expected to read every day and practise their multiplication tables in addition to other work that is given. This week I have asked the children to log on to Mathletics and complete the assigned tasks and to complete a research task, finding out about a famous person who has contributed to equality and anti-discrimination. They may present their findings in any way they wish and have until the 19th of October to complete this task . They are then free to explore the rest of Mathletics if they wish and can follow the link to Spellodrome.

Walk Around the Local Area
On Tuesday 9th October, we will be taking a walk around our local area as part of our Geography curriculum – learning about where we live. Any parents who are able to assist us, we appreciate your support. We will leave at 9:00 am and return by 10:00 am.
Reading Books: All children would have brought a reading book appropriate to their reading ability. Please read with your child and write a comment or sign or draw a smiley. Books will only be changed if this is done by the parent/carer. We value your support as it is essential to enable your child to practise their skills and make progress. Books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Home work
Your child would have brought home a homework book with two sets of work. A sheet of Maths work, spellings to learn (related to their phonic phase) and words to read and decode (these are non words or alien words to support children’s phonic skills).
Mathletics homework has also been set according to our Maths learning in class. The log in cards are at the back of your child’s reading records. Certificates will be handed out weekly in our Year Group Assembly.

Our learning this week…
English
We will be introducing a new text ‘Lila and the secret of the rain’ by David Conway & Jude Daley. They will be looking at the front cover , describe what they see, make predictions, role-play and sequence the story with a beginning, middle and end as well as learn to ask questions about setting, character and events.
Maths
We will be counting in 2’s forwards and backwards. Children will introduce additions with part part-whole model. We will also recap adding two groups of objects together. Children will use numicons and counters and represent their ideas using pictures or number sentences.
Geography
W are going on a local walk to find out about Croydon. We will then develop our mapping skills and draw maps as well as write about what they discovered. Children will use key words such as town, roads, shops, library etc..
PSHE
Children will be continue their learning about ‘New Beginnings’ and will write what they are good at and what they need to develop further. They will develop an understanding of different types of new beginnings – class, teacher, school, house, baby…
R.E
Children will begin to understand about Harvest and discuss how it is celebrated around the world.
P.E.
We will continue our fun P.E. session and develop balance skills as well as listening skills and travelling in different ways and develop spatial awareness.
Art
We continue our learning using line and tone and develop our skills to draw a self – portrait.
Music
We will learn a range of body and harvest songs.

This week we will be using our portal story toolkit to plan a new version of Leon and the Place Between. We will then be using our plans to write a new ending for the story.

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)
We will be focusing on homphones this weel. These are words that sound the same/ similar but have a different spelling or meaning. We will be focusing on two/ to/ too, they’re/ there/ their and our/ are/ hour in particular.
Reading
We are still enjoying reading Fantastic Mr Fox as a class.
Maths
We will be moving on to addition and subtraction this week. We will be recapping basic number skills. This includes making numbers up to 10 in different ways. For example: how many ways can you find to make 2? 3? 4? 5? 6? 7? 8? 9? It is important to recognise that number bonds do not only refer to the different ways to make 10. This fundamental skill will help with other aspects of addition and subtraction(e.g bridging).
Topic
We will be doing some work on ‘The Circus’ to fit in with our key text.
History
We are going to learn about Amy Johnson, a local historical figure.
Science
We will be looking at materials and their properties this half term.
P.E
Monday afternoon- ball skills.

Writing
We will be continuing to focus on our first key text: Leon and the Place Between. It has strong links to our work on the circus.
This week we will be innovating the middle part of the story using a toolkit. We will be planning and then writing a new middle and end using our plans. We will be thinking about using lovely conjunctions and vocabulary to make our new stories interesting and creative.
SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)
We are consolidating work on contraction spellings.
We will be also using our knowledge of recently learnt SPaG to edit & up-level our work.
Reading
We are continuing our class read Fantastic Mr Fox. The class are really enjoying it so far!
Maths
This week we are starting a new unit on addition & subtraction. There will be a big focus on number bonds:
- number bonds for 10
- number bonds for numbers up to 20
- number bonds of 20
We will be learning about fact families e.g. how numbers are related. If I know that 3+17=20 then I also know 17+3=20, 20-17=3 and 20-3=17. We will be using bar models to understand this concept.
There is also a big focus on using inverse relationships to check calculations.
History
We are going to learn about Amy Johnson, a local historical figure. This week we will be writing fact files about her

Topic-We will be continuing our topic on Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, explaining when and where the Vikings came from and why they raided Britain. We have been particularly impressed with the children in year four’s writing in role as a Viking raider or Anglo-Saxon monk last week, recalling the attack of Lindisfarne.

Mega stars group won our marble competition with an impressive 215 marbles this week! Merit cards were given to Daisy for showing a positive and hardworking attitude to joining Howard Primary School, to Richa and Solly for their impressive reading comprehension work and to Sofia for her extra hard work with her home learning. Mya is our reader of the week. Well done!

Maths:
This week, we shall be looking at different representations for addition and subtracting. We shall also be looking at estimating and using mental strategies.
English:
This week, we shall be: identifying the key features of a recount, boxing up the structure of a recount, using our senses to describe an image and planning a recount.
SPAG:
We shall be focusing specifically on: modal verbs and using figurative language through the senses.
Reading:
In Year 5, children are responsible for changing their own books independently. We do ask that children read at home everyday and mark this by a simple comment in their homework diary. Please do encourage your child to read aloud, even though they are in Year 5, to build the stamina with their fluency.

Peter read from page 12-16. He struggled on the words ‘inspiration’ and ‘necessary’.
PE:
Our PE lessons will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit on these days.
Music:
Soundstart lessons, with Mr Regan, shall start this week. This is where Year 5 pupils will have the chance to learn both the guitar and keyboard.
RE:
Mrs Forde will continue to teach the children all about Hinduism on Wednesday afternoons.
Science:
We shall be continuing our unit of Space and looking at the Solar System and the planets relative distance to the Sun.
PSHE:
We shall be looking at Black History Month, specifically Mae C. Jennison – the first African American woman to travel in space.
