Book Focus: A selection of Non-fiction books about growing and changing

This week we will have caterpillars in class and the children will be learning about the life cycle of this amazing minibeast. We will focus on aspects of growing and changing. The children will compare and contrast their baby pictures to their current photos and discuss how they have changed and grown. So please send in their baby pictures this week. Thanks to those parents who have sent these in.

Group Phonics: This term we will focus on reading words and sentences containing all the phonemes the children have learnt throughout the year and we will be teaching strategies for instant blending of words and strategies for reading longer multisyllabic words.

MATHS: Halving and doubling

Week beginning 10th June 2019

Maths – This week in maths, we shall be learning the following:

*   I can estimate and approximate area (Continue & finish).

*   I can identify different 2D shapes and describe their properties (Recap Y4).

*   I can measure angles in degrees using a protractor (multiples of 10).

*   I can precisely measure angles using a protractor.

*   I can accurately draw lines and angles using geometrical tools.

*   I can calculate angles on a straight line.

English/History – We shall be continuing our diary writing unit. This week we shall be taking a cross-curricular approach (History) with our writing. We shall be comparing eduction in the Victorian times to modern times. We shall then be building a character profile of a victorian child and then write a diary entry.

PE – Swimming continues this week and on Thursdays we shall be taking part in developing our Tennis skills.

French – We shall be continuing to look at the unit of clothes!

Music – Soundstart lessons will continue this week.

Reading – We shall be continuing with our class text, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll this week. We shall be basing our comprehension sessions around our class text.

Geography – We shall be starting our new topic, Rivers!

Art – We shall be looking at our new unit, landscape artists.

Our Learning for this week…

English

Poetry – We will reading some poems and discuss the key features of a poem. Then, we will support children to plan, create and publish their own poems.- ‘Down at the station’, ‘The Sound Collector’. We

Maths

First, we will complete our subtraction word problems tasks. Then we will be looking at Measuring this week Volume and Capacity. Our children will be using out-door area to explore their learning.  

Science

Children will be naming and identifying plant parts we eat. Example: roots, leaves, stems, seeds, flowers. We will be listening and learning ‘ Plant alphabet song’.

Geography

Children will name, locate and identify characteristics of the 4 countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding season Maps-Atlas work.

P.E

We will be supporting children to master basic skipping skills. We will encourage them to develop foot patterns that aid skipping.

PSHE

Children will learn to talk about their feelings. Discussion about Big/small worries – How can we get help?  What can we do?…. We will be reading the text -‘ The Huge Bag Worries’.

R.E

We will be looking at Hindusium- Hindus believes about God.

Week Beginning 10th June 2019

The children have settled back into school really well after their half term break. This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will work on statistics. We will create tally charts, bar charts, diagrams and tables. We will also answer one and two step questions based on data presented.
  • In English we will plan and write our own version of Dream Big by Deloris Jordan. We will make our own dreams the focus of the story.
  • In science we will learn how to carry out a health check on another person.
  • In topic time we will plan and make our own nut free muesli.

Year Four Weekly Blog 10th June 2019

Thank you for all your support cheering your children on at Sports Day. What a fantastic day! 

This week year four will be learning:

Literacy-This week we will be learning about successful opening to narrative stories and using inverted commas in writing.

Maths-We will be learning about types of angles including obtuse, acute and right-angles. as  well as identifying angles in shapes

Topic-After learning about religion and deities, we will be learning why Ancient Egyptians built pyramids.

P.E-We will be continuing net and wall sports, focusing on volleyball

I.C.T-We will be using scratch to design toy prototypes

Science-We will be starting a unit on electricity finding out what we already know and building on this learning.

Science-We will be carrying out  assessments this week as well as looking at evolution

PSHE-We will be learning about illegal and legal drugs

PE-This week’s PE lessons also include Sports Day (Thur 6th June 10am at Croydon Arena)

R.E-We will be continuing our work on Buddhism

MFL-We will be carrying out assessments this week in how much we have learnt already

DT-We will be starting to learn how pop up books are made and evaluating their effectiveness

 

Important Information

This is a very busy half term for the children in Year 6.

Please look out for notices/letters that will be sent home about trips, leavers parties, leavers’ assemblies, summer fair, reports etc.

Please also make sure the school are made aware about days your child may need to have off due to visits to secondary school etc.

Please keep an eye out for any pop up books you may have at home.  We need to collect about 12 that the children can evaluate.

English – We shall be starting our new unit, diary writing. This week we shall be identifying the key features, editing an existing diary and then planning and writing a diary entry based on Sports Day.

PE – It is sports day this Thursday. Any child travelling with the school must arrive promptly and in their PE kit.

French – We shall be continuing to look at the unit of clothes!

Music – Soundstart lessons will continue this week.

Reading – We shall be continuing with our class text, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll this week. We shall be basing our comprehension sessions around our class text.

Welcome back to school!!  We hope you have had a restful May half term break.

It’s hard to believe we are in the final term of your child’s year in Reception. This is a very busy term with lots of fun activities for the children. It is also an important term as we begin to prepare the children for their transition to Year 1 in September.

You can help by talking to your child at home about change and growing. This is something we will also focus on in class. We will be doing a class project about their development and how they have grown. So we ask if you could please send in ONE baby picture (0-12 months) of your child.  Please send a copy or if you send the original we will make a copy and return the original. We will also return any copies we make. Please send in by Monday, 10th June. Please send in a named envelope.

There are also several fun days to look forward to this term: Coach trip to the farm; Sports Day and the Summer Fair. More information about dates and times will follow in due course.

We look forward to a wonderful final term with you and your families.

Wow! It is hard to believe that the final term of Year 2 is here already…
Writing

We will be spending the first week back writing police reports based on our key text from last half term: Tuesday.

Maths

We will be recapping all of our maths learning from the year, starting with number and place value. This is a good way to ensure that the children have a sound understanding of each of the maths strands. We will still be having structured lessons in the same format as usual.

Art

We will be creating our own colour wheels based on Kandinsky’s work.

Geography 

We will be naming and locating the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world.

Science

We will be exploring the desert habitat. We will also be looking at how humans can keep healthy e.g diet, hygiene and exercise.

PE

We are going to be making the most of the good weather this term. We will be doing ball skills with tennis/ basketball and skipping.
