Westminster

Welcome to Westminster Bridge Class.

Class teacher: Mrs Ramakrishnan

Teaching assistant: Miss Dale

Week beginning 17th September

September 16, 2018

Writing

We will be continuing to focus on our first key text: Leon and the Place Between. It has strong links to our work on the circus.

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)

We are focusing on using conjunctions to join clauses this week.

Reading

We have started reading our first class read: Fantastic Mr Fox. The class are really enjoying it so far!

Maths

We will be continuing our work on number and place value. Last week we were learning how to use a part whole model to partition numbers. Please see some examples of our learning below.

In the first part-whole model, the whole is 59. It has been partitioned into tens and ones. 9 would go in the other circle.

The second uses numicon. The whole is the ‘missing’ part. The blue pieces of numicon represent 10 and the purple 9. Two tens+9ones=29. The whole would be 29.

The third uses dienes. There are three tens and one one which are equal to 31.

Here, the wholes have been partitioned in different ways. For example, in the first part-whole model, the whole is 37. It has been partitioned differently. The model shows that 20+ ? = 37. We have been using dienes, beadstrings and numicon to solve these problems. We can count on from 20, adding dienes etc until we reach 37. We could also make 37 using our concrete resources and subtract two tens. The amount remaining is the missing part of the model. We can check our answer by adding both parts to make sure that they make 37 altogether. The key learning point is that numbers can be partitioned in different ways.

This week our focus will be on the expanded written method.

For example:

  • 1 ten+3 ones = 13
  • two tens+3 ones= 23
  • three tens+3 ones=33

We will also be using place value charts to partition numbers. It is important that every pupil has a secure understanding of the value of each digit in a two-digit number. For example, the in 95 represents 90 (tens) and the represents 5 (ones).

In the first image, there are 4 tens and 8 ones. 4 tens+8 ones=48.

We will continue to use different representations of numbers to the children across the week including using numicon, dienes, bead strings, part-whole models and number lines.

Topic

We will be doing some work on ‘The Circus’ to fit in with our key text.

History

We are going to learn about Amy Johnson, a local historical figure.

Science

We will be looking at materials and their properties this half term.

PSHE

This week we will be looking at what makes a good friend.

P.E

Monday afternoon. The other slot is to be confirmed.

Week Beginning 10th September 2018

September 10, 2018

Writing

We are going to be using the plans we did last week to write a non-chronological report about Howard Primary School before moving on to our first key text: Leon and the Place Between.

We will be thinking carefully about new vocabulary in the story and getting to know the story really well.

We are focusing on spelling this week; in particular, the year 2 key words.

Reading

We are going to begin our class read: Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl.

We are also going to complete a reading comprehension activity so that Miss Brown knows how good our reading is.

Our focus this week is introducing whole class guided reading sessions using pictures as a stimulus and using ERIC skills to practice answering questions about pictures and texts.

This is an example of the type of picture and questions we will be using:

Maths

We will be starting our formal maths lessons this week. Our first block is number and place value.

This week we will be focusing on number to 100 including reading & writing the numbers. It would be very helpful if children could practice writing the numbers in words at home 🙂

We will be introducing different representations of numbers to the children across the week including using numicon, dienes, bead strings, part-whole models and number lines.

Topic

We will be doing some work on ‘The Circus’ o fit in with our key text.

History

We are going to learn about Amy Johnson, a local historical figure.

Science

We will be starting our work on materials.

PSHE

We will be continuing with our new module of Zippy’s Friends.

P.E

To be confirmed.
