This week, it was decided to spare you having to complete a separate piece of homework. Instead, we would love for you to ensure that you have completed all learning/lesson tasks from the past two weeks.
-
Then, we would like you to pick a walk – should you go out for some fresh air – and document it with 3-5 pictures. Arrange the pictures in the correct order and describe your little trip for fresh air and exercise.
-
For everyone who is “stuck inside”, please document and annotate your daily routine/activities with 3-5 pictures.
-
Next weekend, I will set you up on a new Geography mapping system (which I hope we can purchase for school) where you will do this documenting online while creating your own map. A video of instructions will be posted during the course of next week. If successful, I will ask the other children in school to follow your example.

Being helpful at home
‘Children can learn a lot from doing household chores.
Doing chores helps children learn about what they need to do to care for themselves, a home and a family. They learn skills they can use in their adult lives, like preparing meals, cleaning, organising and keeping a garden.
Being involved in chores also gives children experience of relationship skills like communicating clearly, negotiating, cooperating and working as a team.
When children contribute to family life, it helps them feel competent and responsible. Even if they don’t enjoy the chore, when they keep going they get the feeling of satisfaction that comes with finishing a task.’

Have a go at the White Rose lessons for the first 3 days. They can be found at:
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/
Day 1-Lesson 1 and 2 (Vertically opposite angles and angles in a triangle)
Day 2-Lesson 3 and 4 (Angles in a triangle-special cases and angles in a triangle-missing angles)
Day 3-Lesson 5 (Maths Challenge)
Day 4 and 5 are a different topic but still to do with different shapes (polygon).
Day 4-Have a go at the tasks linked to circles. Read through the learning reminders at the start. They are acting like a teacher-reminding you of the key learning points. Try the questions-you can choose either to have a go at the mild questions or the hot questions (these are a little trickier) or you could have a go at both sets of questions. If you are still finding it tricky have a go at the ‘A bit stuck questions’. There’s a challenge at the end if you finish quickly.
Day 5-Quadrilaterals-If you have access to power point, watch the slides but if you cannot access power point have a look at the Learning reminders. Then choose either to have a go at the mild questions or the hot questions (these are a little trickier) or you could have a go at both sets of questions. Since so many of you enjoyed last week’s challenge, this week we would like you to create a dish using a sepcific ingredient. Your chosen ingredient is a potato. Your dish can include other ingredients, but we would like you to use a potato somewhere in your dish. After making it, please write a set of instructions on how to create your dish. Finally, you will need to evaluate the process: what went well and what would you do differently next time?
Like before, please do send pictures/videos of your dish (and you making it – if you want) via Class Dojo!

Week Beginning 27th April
[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#6cea30″ border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Nearly all year 3 families have now signed up to Class Dojo which is fantastic. We can see from the photographs of work submitted that the children are working really hard. If your child has not submitted anything yet we would love to see their work. Some families have found it easier to attach photographs to messages – which is fine. Please keep checking your messages. It is really important that we are able to stay in touch during this time. [/dropshadowbox]
Internet safety
Whilst learning at home, we want to make sure everyone is staying safe on the internet. The Government have a very good website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ which helps to teach children about the importance of internet safety. It has lots of child friendly videos and information for children of all ages, as well as parents/carers. It also has some home learning activities to support their learning on this which you may wish to do, as well as a reward chart (in the age 5-7 pack) which may help to encourage the children to complete their work – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/Support-tools/home-activity-worksheets/. So it would be great for the children to spend some time this week looking at this website.
This week our learning is as follows:
English
Spellings – Please learn the following spellings: though, notice, quarter, length, library, famous .
Children who are in Violet group (Waterloo) or Toy Story group (Blackfriars) for English should work on: are, by, come, do, had, have.
Grammar – Follow the English activities on BBC bitesize daily https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons
Narrative – Children should continue to work around the story of Romulus and Remus and plan their own version of the story using substitute characters.
Romulus and Remus Story Powerpoint
- Day 1 – Design two new characters to replace Romulus and Remus. These could be female twins, friends, siblings of different ages or any other characters you can think of. Draw your characters and write some sentences describing what they are like. [Character design template]
- Day 2 – Design a character to replace the wolf in the story. – you can use any animal. Draw and describe your animal. [Writing frame]
- Day 3 – Think about how your new characters will change your story. For example if your human characters have been brought up by a more peaceful animal would they have a different temperament and be able to resolve their differences? Make some notes.
- Day 4 – Plan your story using a story mountain . Use the PowerPoint below to help you draw your story mountain. [Story Mountain]
- Day 5 – Write a good opening paragraph. Remember to use your work from day 1 and 2 to write detailed descriptions of your characters. You will complete your story next week.
Remember not all children learn at the same rate. You can scaffold your child by providing key spellings or allowing them to orally rehearse their ideas first, you may also want to remind them of key punctuation in a sentence e.g. capital letters and full stops. You can also extend your child’s learning by encouraging them to use different sentence openers (Sentence openers word mat) and sentence types. Children who are already strong writers should be asked to really think about the effect of their sentences.
Maths
We are continuing with our learning on fractions in maths this week – with a focus of finding fractions of a set of objects. Please feel free to be creative with your working out – you may want to use items you find around the house to help you find the answers. We would love to see photos of your creative maths learning on Class Dojo! We have set daily worksheets, with some videos/powerpoints to help with the learning. If you are in Prism group (Waterloo) or Blue group (Blackfriars) or finding the work on fractions difficult, you may wish to scroll down to do some revision from the year 2 work on fractions.
- Day 1 – Fractions on a number line worksheet
- Day 2 – Video – To find unit fractions of a given quantity, worksheet – Fractions of a set of objects worksheet
- Day 3 – Fractions of a set of objects [2]
- Day 4 – Fractions of a set of objects [3]
- Day 5 – Powerpoint – Equivalent Fractions, worksheet – Equivalent Fractions
Answers
- Day 1 – Fractions on a number line
- Day 2 – Fractions of a set of objects
- Day 3 – Fractions of a set of objects [2]

- Day 5 – Equivalent Fractions
Revision worksheets:
Day 1 – Recognise a third
Day 2 – Finding a third
Day 3 – Unit Fractions

There are video lessons on fractions on the Oak National Academy website which may help your child in their learning.
https://www.thenational.academy/online-classroom/year-3/maths#subjects
The children in year 3 were doing very well in learning their times tables before school closure. They should continue to work on the times table they were learning at the time of school closure. When they are secure with both the multiplication and the division facts they can move on. The order the tables are learned in is – 10, 2, 5, 3, 4, 8, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12. Children who are already 144 club members should work on their speed of recall. The following websites should be helpful;
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
All children should have log-in details for the times tables rockstars website.

Homework – Week ending 24th April 2020
Here is a range of activities you should complete over the weekend and return to us by Wednesday, 29th April 2020.
Maths:
-
Complete the tasks set on Mathletics.
-
Complete the little counting challenge. If the numbers are too difficult, you are allowed to choose easier starting points if your parents agree.
English: Write a diary entry for one day of the weekend. Make it exciting even though it might not be the most exciting weekend.
History: Since everything that you are doing at the moment is in some way “homework”, please treat this as a dive into the link between Ancient Greece and today. Many of our Sciences are based on discoveries and thoughts of outstanding Scientists and Philosophers from the era we have looked at. Therefore, please create a factfile on a personality of your choice. Once I receive them, they will be shared on Dojo and the blog so that everyone of you can learn more from the others. Choose from:
Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates, Aristarchus, Euclid, Archimedes, Eratosthenes,
Extension: Create an overview with images of other key inventions by Ancient Greeks.
