English

At Howard Primary School we have adopted Read Write Inc Phonics.

RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing. Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • Learn to read words using Fred Talk
  • Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out
  • Show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

  • Ordering numbers

Children will order numbers from greatest to smallest, or from smallest to largest. Children will use their knowledge of place value to help them.

We will fill out 100 squares and look for patterns when counting in 2s, 5s , 3s and 10s

  • Count in steps of 2

Children will also learn to count in twos from any given number – 11, 13, 15 etc.

  • Count in steps of 5

  • Chairs can be made from wood.
  • Shoes can be made from leather

Each material can be used to make a range of different things; for example, wood can be used to make tables, chairs, spoons, pencils, shoes, doors, floors and many more things. We will  also go on a material hunt around the school.

Please also refer to the Phonics guide in your Welcome pack.

This week the children will learn to read one new single letter sound each day as follows: /m/a/s/d/t.

They will also learn to recognise the letter which represents each sound and how to form(write) each letter. Each day they will bring home a handwriting practise sheet about the sound they have learnt at school. Please collect and keep these sheets at home for practise later on as they learn more sounds. Please note that they will learn to write these as lower case letters.

To help your child pronounce the sounds correctly, here’s a link for parents: Phonics – How to say the sounds

Our class read is The Boy with the Bronze Axe by Kathleen Fidler. Children also have access to a range of Raymond Briggs books which allow them to explore more of his writing.

We will be beginning to send home reading books for those children who have not already chosen them. Reading diaries should be brought to school each day.

Maths- We will be continuing to work on place value, consolidating 3-digit numbers over 200, finding 3-digit multiples of 10 on a 0-1000 number line, finding non-0 0nes digits on sections of number line and identifying and placing 3-digit numbers on a blank 0-1000 number line.

Some of the representations we will be using are;

Place value countersPlace value chartsDienes

PE- We will be continuing to work on football skills and footwork skills in our lessons.

History- We will be continuing to investigate and interpret the past, learning about Stone Age people and how farming changed their lives.

Science- We will be carrying out an investigation to discover how friction caused by different surfaces affects movement of an object.

Homework- We have been looking at inventions which changed the Stone Age world in both English and History. Over the next couple of weeks, we would like children to find out about a person who changed the world and display their information on a poster which we can display at school. Please see below for full details.

PE will take place on Monday and Tuesday for Blackfriars class and Tuesday and Thursday for Waterloo class. Children should come to school in their school PE kits on those days.

Please ensure your child has a water bottle in school each day.
