We would be grateful for parents’ support in helping children practice for the check.[/dropshadowbox]

This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will learn to use formal written methods to carry out multiplication calculations.
  • In English we will look at traditional tales and write a poem with a forest setting.
  • In reading we will carry out activities based on a non-fiction, tourist information text.
  • In science we will look at food chains,
  • In RHE we will be thinking about “looking after ourselves.”
  • Our blocked foundation subject will be history. We will be learning about the Ancient Egyptians.

Millennium Class will have their last swimming lesson on Tuesday and will do PE on Wednesday. Southwark Class will do PE on Wednesday and Thursday and will swim on 17th and 24th May.

Week commencing 9th May

Another amazing week! What wonderful things we have learned!

Here’s what we will be learning next week:

English- We will be continuing our class text, Lob by Linda Newbery. We will be editing our instruction writing, recapping past and present tense verbs, practising using evidence to back up our opinions about the text, using echo reading to help our fluency in reading aloud and beginning to build a character profile of our main characters.

Reading- We will be looking at an extract from Under your feet, a non-fiction text, focusing on word classes, reading for prosody (reading fluency) and focussing on text structure and inference skills.

We will be beginning to send home reading books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for those children who have not already chosen them. Reading diaries should be brought to school each day.

Maths- We will be continuing to learn to tell the time. This week we will be looking at the number of hours in a day, telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes and the nearest minute and the difference between am and pm.

If your child would like to practise their learning at home, there are lots of free games which they can use, including Daily 10 from Topmarks or Hit the Button

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

PE- We will be continuing to work on ball skills  and also learning some of the rules and skills of rounders.

RE- We will be looking at some aspects of Christianity, beginning with a discussion about the different aspects of God (Holy Trinity) and why Jesus is important to Christians.

Science- We will be continuing our topic about rocks and soils, taking a walk around the local area and looking at what types of rocks we can find.

RHE- We are going to begin to consider what makes healthy relationships.

Homework- We will post homework on Google Classroom each week. We have added tasks to Mathletics. Additionally, the children will have access to Language Angels to practise their new vocabulary in Spanish. We hope to give your child access to TTRockstars also this week, a fun way to practise times tables.

PE will take place on Monday and Friday for Blackfriars class and Tuesday and Friday for Waterloo class. Children should come to school in their school PE kits on those days.

Please ensure your child has a water bottle in school each day.

Lastly, if you have any questions or concerns, please speak to a member of staff or email us at the address below;

Our learning this week…

English

At Howard Primary School we have adopted Read Write Inc Phonics.

RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing. Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • Learn to read words using Fred Talk
  • Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out
  • Show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

Five key principles underpin the teaching in all Read Write Inc. sessions:

Purpose – know the purpose of every activity and share it with the children, so they know the one thing they should be thinking about

Participation – ensure every child participates throughout the lesson. Partnership work is fundamental to learning

Praise – ensure children are praised for effort and learning, not ability

Pace – teach at an effective pace and devote every moment to teaching and learning

Passion – be passionate about teaching so children can be engaged emotionally.

Hold a sentence is an activity that encourages children to remember a whole sentence while focusing on spelling and punctuation.

Build a sentence is to give children the opportunity to create their own sentence to that shows the meaning of a word and edit a sentence allows the children to critique a sentence using their knowledge of spelling punctuation and grammar. Children complete a longer piece of independent writing, which gives them the opportunity to show off their creativity and to practice their spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Autism Acceptance Month Assembly

Today, Thursday 28th April 2022 , children will take part in our Autism Acceptance Month Assembly.

This assembly aims to raise awareness, in a child friendly way, of what it means to be autistic so children and adults can understand strengths and difficulties of a peer who is on the autistic spectrum.

Before we broke up for the Easter holidays, each child received an Autism Acceptance Month Fun Booklet to complete at home so children could prepare for assembly and involve parents in the process.

During assembly, Mrs Pollington will take the children on a journey to discover autism and what strengths and needs an autistic person might have. Children will learn about the 5 senses , visual language, visual aids and role models.

Children will role play how they can show kindness, understanding , care to an autistic person who is experiencing sensory overload or be confused by language. We will look at the media world to find examples of autistic children who have grown into adults and are living their dream.

You can see a selection of photos taken during assembly here:

The School Assembly is based on this video resource. You can watch the Assembly video resource here:
