[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#9bf7ae” border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Important Information[/dropshadowbox]

A very big thank you to all of you who donated presents for the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes.  They are being wrapped this week and sent off in the next couple of weeks.  I know they will very much be appreciated.

Please remember the Christmas Fair is on Saturday 9th December.  It would be great if you could support the school.

Congratulations to all those who received a merit card and a Privilege Card this week.  Keep up the hard work.

The book fair will be in the hall after school starting on Friday 1st December and will be available to children after school the following Monday and Tuesday too.  For every £1 the children spend on books, the school will receive the same in donations of books-this is too good an opportunity to miss!!

Don’t forget that Friday 1st December is Mufti day.  Please bring in a bottle for the tombola at the Christmas fair as payment for wearing your own clothes.

Good luck to the children singing in the Whitgift Centre next Monday to raise money for the Lily Trust.

Good luck to the children speaking at City Hall on Wednesday.  They are putting together a bid with the help of ‘WE’ to help raise funds for the local charity The Lily Trust.

Week Beginning 4th December 2017

This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:

Writing

We will be starting to look at the nativity story. We will be learning the story by retelling and sequencing it before we move on to look at specific characters. Our long term aim is to rewrite the nativity story from a different perspective e.g. as the donkey or a star.

Phonics/ SPaG

We are continuing to recap phase 5 alternative graphemes and spelling patterns including alternative spellings e.g. the /m/ sound spelt in words such as lamb or the /ch/ sound as in words like picture or witch.

We will also be looking at how to spell high frequency words and improving simple sentences by adding adjectives and connectives.

Maths

We are continuing to focus on addition and subtraction. We will be using our knowledge of adding multiples of 10 and adding one digit numbers to two digit numbers by bridging through ten to help us to subtract one digit numbers from two digit numbers e.g 65-7.

It is important that your child is secure with knowing the nearest multiple of ten for any given number. For example, if we are on the number 46, we know that we need to add four more to reach 50 or subtract 6 to reach 40. A strong understanding of number bonds to 10 will also support this.

Here is an example of how we can add one digit and two digit numbers. This understanding will help us with the concept of subtracting too. The children need to be secure in knowing the nearest multiple of 10 to any given number. For example:

We can then use this to help us to bridge through 10. Have a look at my example below.

PSHE

We have started the Zippy’s Friends project which will run for most of the year. After each of the six modules we will send home an activity for your child to complete. This will give you an insight to what it is all about. Please speak to your child about these sessions as they are all very excited about the project! So far we have discussed things that make us feel happy/ sad and what we can do to help us feel better. In this module we will also be looking at anger, jealousy and embarrassment. I was extremely impressed with the maturity shown by the whole class.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As you will know, we have given out scripts for those with speaking parts in our Christmas Performance. It is really coming on well but please encourage your children to practice their lines/ song words/ actions at home. We do not have many rehearsals left and want it to be the best show yet!

The show will be taking place on Thursday 14th December at 2:15pm. You will be able to collect your child straight after the performance if you wish to, though please let us know if this is the case.

Week beginning: 4th December 2017

This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:

Writing

We have almost come to the end of our film reviews and are ready to use our plans to write one up. They will include the following features: a synopsis, a star rating, opinions and reasons that we would/ would recommend the film.

Phonics/ SPaG

We have been working on phase 6 concepts. These include regular past tense verbs and using the past progressive tense e.g we were/ he was running/ jumping rather than ‘he jumped’ or ‘she ran’.

We will also be looking at homophones including their, they’re and there as well as to, too and two.

Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:

English- We will be continuing our unit of work  about Robin Hood, reading a version by Marcia Williams alongside the Disney film. We will be acting, planning and beginning to write our own versions of the Robin Hood legend ‘The Golden Arrow’ this week. As well as focusing on fronted adverbial phrases in grammar.

Maths- We are beginning a unit of work on measure, beginning with a recap of Year 3 objectives and thinking about converting units of measure.

Spelling- Our focus this week in class is the suffix sion. We will be thinking of as many words as we can such as  mission and practising our spelling using methods such as speed spelling and hangman.[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Reading- All children read with me at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme as well as reading with our new class teaching assistant-Mrs Minnaar.  After the adult led sessions they complete tasks relating to the text. In addition, some children receive additional one to one reading with an adult. However, I can not emphasis enough the importance of encouraging your child to read independently or to yourself every day as this helps with their learning across the entire curriculum. Your child is led to appropriate books by the adults in class but the expectation is that they choose books themselves and change these books when they need to during early morning work session. If your child is not bringing home challenging enough or too challenging books please speak to them about this and write us a quick message in their reading journals.[/dropshadowbox]

ICT- We are still holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.

French- We will be revising our conversational skills so far and then moving on to learn the numbers between 20 and 50 and learning vocabulary to describe our families.

PSHE- Our current focus is anti-bullying to coincide with anti-bullying week. We will also be relating this to ideas from the 2 films we viewed this term-Trolls and Ninjago.

Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday. In addition to tasks given out I expect the children to read every day and continue to practise the multiplication tables. I will be collecting the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly. Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading. If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note.

Successes– Well done to Limar, Ciaran, Harley and Tyray who all received merit cards this week!

Well done to Marble group-Team Sport who won this week’s marble competition and to Limar and Stefan for being our Readers of the Week.
