Maths – We continue our work on Measures – height, length, weight, capacity.
Science – We are continuing our learning about Seasons focusing on Winter.
RE – We are continuing to develop our understanding of Christianity.
Home work
Homework is sent home every Friday and this week should be promptly returned on Tuesday please. Mathletics homework is also set weekly related to the concepts children are learning. Children can earn bronze, silver and gold certificates as they earn the points. Please check the back of your reading record for your child’s username and password.
Reading is very important and please enjoy reading a range of fun books as well as their reading books to promote a love for reading. Please remember to write a comment or sign your child’s reading record regularly. We appreciate your support to enable your child to be a fluent reader.
Just a little reminder we return on Wednesday 3rd January. Enjoy the holidays, Thank you for your continued support.
Week Beginning 18th December 2017
Writing
This week we are writing our Nativity stories from a different character perspective.
Phonics/ SPaG
We are continuing to recap phase 5 alternative graphemes and spelling patterns including alternative spellings e.g. the /m/ sound spelt in words such as lamb or the /ch/ sound as in words like picture or witch.
We will also be looking at how to spell high frequency words and improving simple sentences by adding adjectives and connectives.
Maths
We are continuing to focus on addition and subtraction. We will be using our knowledge of adding multiples of 10 and adding one digit numbers to two digit numbers by bridging through ten to help us to subtract one digit numbers from two digit numbers e.g 65-7.
It is important that your child is secure with knowing the nearest multiple of ten for any given number. For example, if we are on the number 46, we know that we need to add four more to reach 50 or subtract 6 to reach 40. A strong understanding of number bonds to 10 will also support this.
Here is an example of how we can add one digit and two digit numbers. This understanding will help us with the concept of subtracting too. The children need to be secure in knowing the nearest multiple of 10 to any given number. For example:
We can then use this to help us to bridge through 10. Have a look at my example below.
We will also be thinking about how to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers. Firstly without crossing the tens and then moving on to crossing tens.
A useful strategy for addition is:
Example: 54+21=
4 ones + 1 one= 5 ones
5 tens + 2 tens= 7 tens
__ tens + __ ones=__
This is partitioning and recombining ????
A useful strategy for subtraction is:
Example: 79-13=
79
70 9
-10 -3
60 6
PSHE
We have started the Zippy’s Friends project which will run for most of the year. After each of the six modules we will send home an activity for your child to complete. This will give you an insight to what it is all about. Please speak to your child about these sessions as they are all very excited about the project! So far we have discussed things that make us feel happy/ sad and what we can do to help us feel better. In this module we will also be looking at anger, jealousy and embarrassment. I was extremely impressed with the maturity shown by the whole class.

On behalf of Mrs Glenn and myself, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Already it is the end of our first term and it has flown by! I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and we come back to a successful Spring term in Year 4!
Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:
English- We will be continuing our pantomime reviews.
Maths- We will be finishing our unit on perimeter.
Reading- All children read with an adult at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme. After this adult led session they complete tasks relating to the text or linked to current English and Spelling focuses. We continue to read stories as a class.
ICT- We are still holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr
Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday. In addition to tasks given out I expect the children to read every day and continue to practise the multiplication tables. I will be collecting the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly. Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading. If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note.
Successes– Well done to Aishu, Sophie, William and the whole of Millennium who all received merit cards this week!

Wednesday 20th-Last day of term. Attendance assembly. School finishes at 3.30pm. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
School starts back again on Wednesday 3rd December at 8.50am
Week beginning 18th December 2017
The final three days of the autumn term will be very busy and filled with fun! However, we will still be doing literacy and maths.
This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:
Writing
We will be using our plans to write our nativity stories from a different perspective.
Maths
This week we have been adding two two-digit numbers (without crossing the tens boundary).
Take a look at some of the strategies we have been using…
A useful strategy for addition is:
Example: 54+21=
4 ones + 1 one= 5 ones
5 tens + 2 tens= 7 tens
__ tens + __ ones=__
This is partitioning and recombining.
Next we will be adding two two-digit numbers (crossing the tens boundary). Please see our example below (also featured on the blog last week).
Note that on the numberline representation I have shown two ways of calculating 37+27. The most efficient way is to add 20 then 3 then 4. Your child’s choice of strategy will depend on their confidence with counting in tens etc.
It seems unlikely that we will move onto subtracting two two-digit numbers before Christmas as we want to ensure that all of the children are as confident as possible with what we have looked at so far. However, a useful strategy for subtraction isExample: 79-13=
79
70 9
-10 -3
60 6
How can you help to develop your child’s number fluency?
- Continue practicing counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
- Ask them to show you what they have been doing in school.
- Practice times tables.
- Quick recall of halves and doubles (for numbers within 100)
- Partitioning numbers in different ways (e.g all of the ways to make 13).
- Give your child a number – how many more do we need to add to get to the nearest multiple of 10? What about if we were subtracting? For example: 56 (we have to add four to get to 60 or subtract 6 to get to 50). This helps them to recognise that we do not need to do individual jumps on a numberline when calculating.
- Give children a number and ask them what the value of each digit is. For example, 96 (the 9 has a value of 90 and the 6 has a value of 6).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Our class party will be on Tuesday 19th December.
Homework
I will be continuing to set homework on Mathletics. I am aware that some people have had issues with adobe flash player. This is something you need to enable on your computers. If this is the case then please let me know. I am happy for the children to complete the task after eating their lunch on Mondays (as an adult has to be there for their health and safety).
We hope that you have an enjoyable festive break and are looking forward to seeing you in the New Year!
