Week beginning 15th January 2018

Our learning objectives for this week (beginning Wednesday 15th January) are:

Writing

Here is the story of The Magic Paintbrush.

The Magic Brush

Long, long ago in Ancient China there lived a poor boy, who was called Chang. Although he loved drawing, Chang was too poor to have a paintbrush so he used a stick instead. He would draw in the sand or scratch marks on the walls.

Early one morning, Chang saw a large, silver fish trapped in the tall reeds by the riverbank. The fish were struggling to get free. He helped to release the fish because he felt sorry fot them.

Later that day, Chang was sleeping. In his dream, a man dressed in a silver cloak spoke to him. “You are a kind boy Chang. I am giving you a magic brush. Use it to help the poor.” Chang woke with a start and lying beside him was a paintbrush.

So Chang painted the shape of a butterfly and to his amazement it changed into a real butterfly and flew away. Chang was delighted with this gift. He ran straight back to the village to see how he could help the poor people.

First, he painted a donkey for the young mother to help her carry her goods. Next he painted an ox to help the farmer pull his plough. After that he painted a hoe for the old lady to weed her garden. Everyday he found a new use for the paintbrush.

Unluckily, the Emperor heard of Chang and his magic brush. He sent for Chang and ordered him to paint a field of gold. Chang didn’t want to obey the greedy Emperor so he drew a sea with a tiny island in the distance.

“Where is my field of gold?” shouted the Emperor, angrily.

“Just here,” replied Chang, drawing a tiny field on the island.

“Paint me a boat so that I can travel to the island,” snarled the Emperor. So Chang painted a boat. The Emperor climbed onto the boat. Chang drew the north wind blowing towards the island.

“I’m going too slowly,” roared the Emperor. “Paint stronger wind.” “So Chang drew a storm. Suddenly, the waves grew rougher and rougher until the boat capsized and the Emperor disappeared. Then Chang drew a white horse so that he could ride home and tell his friends what had happened to the Emperor who wanted too much for himself.

Hungerford Class have loved looking The Magic Brush’ story so far. This week we will be retelling the story through drama. We will then be using the ‘warning tale toolkit’ to box up the story into different sections.

Maths

We have now moved onto money. We will be counting coins and notes. We will also be finding different ways of making to same amounts.

What could you do at home?

Give your child a handful of coins. Can they tell you the most efficient way to count it?

Play shops- ask them to make 23p in several different ways.

I am confident that all of our previous work on number and place value and addition and subtraction has formed a secure foundation for our work on money.

Homework

I will be continuing to set homework on Mathletics. I am aware that some people have had issues with adobe flash player. This is something you need to enable on your computers. If this is the case then please let me know. I am happy for the children to complete the task after eating their lunch on Mondays (as an adult has to be there for their health and safety).

THIS WEEK’S LEARNING:

SPRING TERM 1 TOPIC: Transport

LITERACY:

Book Focus: The Naughty Bus by Jan and Jerry Oke

The children really enjoyed role playing the mischievous adventures of the naughty bus. This week we will develop their ideas and write about alternate adventures for the naughty bus. Where else could the naughty bus go?

PHONICS: This week the children will learn a few new digraphs (2 letters which make one sound). We often refer to these (with the children) as ‘special sounds’. This week’s sounds are: /x/, /y/, /z/, /qu/ and /ch/ We will continue to send home a sound sheet each day for each new sound. Please practise letter formation with your child and keep these sheets at home.

MATHS: We will continue to revise number recognition and counting skills. This week we will continue to use the language involved in addition. The children will practise finding the total number of items in two groups by counting all of them.

TOPIC: The children will be discussing different types of transport and the different ways in which they travel to school.[/dropshadowbox]

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”15″ border_color=”#38e83f” ]HOMEWORK:

This week’s homework:

Journey to school

Draw a simple map of your journey to school? Which places do you pass, which types of transport do you see?

KEY WORD LISTS:

Your child will have received their animal word lists. These are the key words that occur most frequently in books your child will read in Reception and beyond. The word lists are designed to encourage your child to learn to read these words in a fun and engaging way so they can instantly recognise them in the books they read.

Please check bookbags for animal word list folders which contain a useful information sheet for parents. Please only send in lists if your child is ready to be tested. There isn’t any rush for your child to race through the lists. It is more important that they have secure recognition of these words before moving onto the next list.

Books for home reading

Week commencing 8th January

Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:

English- We will be continuing our unit of work  about the short film, Coming Home and thinking about writing from different viewpoints. We will then be moving on to a unit of work based around the story The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry.

Maths- We are finishing our work on perimeter by trying to find the perimeter of rectilinear shapes both with and without a grid. We will then be moving on to Multiplication and Division. Alongside this we will be doing a weekly times table challenge and working towards membership of the 100 or 144 club and I would like all children to work hard on their tables to achieve this!

Reading- All children read with an adult at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme. After this adult led session they complete tasks relating to the text or linked to current English and Spelling focuses. We continue to read stories as a class.

ICT- We are still holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr

Our ICT topic this half term is bug fixing and we will be trying to spot and correct the mistakes in Scratch algorithms.

PE- PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and children will need their PE kits. I would also like to remind you that the school policy is that all earrings should be removed, hair should be tied back and tights should be removed when getting changed. I would also ask that PE kits stay in school between Monday and Friday as occasionally we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in additional activities. This half term we will be doing Gym sequences and a Boot camp of circuits to improve fitness, stamina and muscle tone and will continue to run the daily mile.

Topic- Our topic for this term is rainforests. We will be learning about their strata and make up, the animals and people who live there and the effects of deforestation and pollution.

PSHE- We will be starting a new scheme of work called Apple’s friends which will help children to understand their feelings and relationships with others. There will also be some simple tasks for the children to complete at home.

Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday. In addition to tasks given out I expect the children to read every day and continue to practise the multiplication tables. I will be collecting the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly. Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading. If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note.

Successes– Well done to Gabby M, William, Kiki and Zamira who all received merit cards this week!
