Week beginning 10th September 2018
Welcome to QE2 and Tower Bridge class blogs. For the time being both classes will use the same page while we wait for the new page to be created.
We hope you all enjoyed the Summer break and are pleased your children are back in school ready to learn.
We would like to introduce ourselves to you.
Tower Bridge class-Miss Handley is the class teacher and Mrs Jackson is the TA.
QE2-Mr Jalloh is the class teacher and Miss Bryan and Ms Jones are the TA’s.
Both classes also have a range of other adults teaching them for different subjects.
Both classes have started very positively and seem eager for the challenges ahead.
Please be aware that your child will have homework every night which includes reading for at least 30 mins every day and learning all their multiplication and corresponding division facts.
There is a lot to cover this year and while the adults will do everything to prepare them for the challenges ahead, a lot of independent learning will need to be completed at home too. There will need to be a commitment by both parents and children to complete work at home as well as in school so that they have the best opportunities to excel this year.
We look forward to the journey we take together.

We had a fantastic first few days back and are excited for our first full week of learning.
Writing
We are going to be using the plans we did last week to write a non-chronological report about Howard Primary School before moving on to our first key text: Leon and the Place Between.
We will be thinking carefully about new vocabulary in the story and getting to know the story really well.
We are focusing on spelling this week; in particular, the year 2 key words.
Reading
We are going to begin our class read: Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl.
We are also going to complete a reading comprehension activity so that Miss Stroud knows how good our reading is.
Our focus this week is introducing whole class guided reading sessions using pictures as a stimulus and using ERIC skills to practice answering questions about pictures and texts.
This is an example of the type of picture and questions we will be using:
Maths
We will be starting our formal maths lessons this week. Our first block is number and place value.
This week we will be focusing on number to 100 including reading & writing the numbers. It would be very helpful if children could practice writing the numbers in words at home ????
We will be introducing different representations of numbers to the children across the week including using numicon, dienes, bead strings, part-whole models and number lines.
Topic
We will be doing some work on ‘The Circus’ to fit in with our key text.
History
We are going to learn about Amy Johnson, a local historical figure.
Science
We will be starting our work on materials.
PSHE
We will be continuing with our new module of Zippy’s Friends.
P.E
To be confirmed.

Southwark Blog-Week beginning 10.9.18
Welcome to our Southwark class blog. Thank you for all your support during our first week back at term. We have had some fantastic bridge homework brought in and it is lovely to see all children in school with an excellent attitude to their learning. It’s also very encouraging to see so many of the class reading every day at home. Please can I ask you to sign your child’s homework diary which is sent home every night to show that they are reading with a short comment as follows:
Read pages 12-24 enjoying the book and showing good understanding when I ask questions plus signature.
This will earn your child team points-marbles and also helps them keep track where they are with a book. Please come and speak to me after school any day if you would like some help with helping your child read at home. Your child will need to bring their homework diary to school every day as we will find every opportunity to read with them. They can change their books during early morning work each day and whilst your child will be encouraged to choice their book independently, they will be guided to which books are suited to their current level.

Our class read will be The Creakers by Tom Fletcher. If you would like to read along with us the book can be purchased at the link below:
Guided Reading groups will start this week. Your child will read twice with an adult in a guided focus group in additional to their daily English lessons and do targeted comprehension and writing tasks to complement their guided reading.
Maths-
We will be continuing our place value to four digits work by recognising and representing both 3 and 4 digit numbers in different ways, counting forward and backwards in thousands and finding a thousand more and a thousand less than a given number. We will be continuing to develop your child’s numeracy with our fluency, reasoning and problem solving approach and the use of higher order thinking questioning.
A useful website we regularly use to practise key learning is:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
Science-We will be beginning a topic on teeth and the digestive system.

Week commencing 10th September
Welcome to Millennium Bridge class! I hope you all had an amazing summer and are excited to be back at school! We have had a really good first few days and I hope that this is set to continue.
Please find an update about what we will be learning it Millennium next week;
English- We have been using a video clip about Nemo’s first day of school as a prompt for our writing. We have imagined the underwater school and thought about the feelings of Nemo and his Dad. We will be using this to inspire both a diary entry and a letter reassuring Dad that Nemo will be safe at school.
Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.
Maths- We are revising place value. We have thought about the value of each digit in number. We will be moving on to counting in thousands, finding a thousand more or less than a given number and comparing and ordering 4 digit numbers.
In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.
There is a free interactive game we use often in class as a starter which children can also access at home. Please find the link below;
http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
Topic- Our topic for the Autumn term is Vikings and Anglo- saxons. We will be learning about the cultures of both the Vikings and the Anglo-saxons. We will begin by thinking about where the Vikings came from and why they chose to try to invade Britain.
Mrs Forde will be providing PPA cover on a Thursday morning, teaching RE and Spelling.
Homework- Homework will be set on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday each week. The children will be expected to read every day and practise their multiplication tables in addition to other work that is given. This week I have asked that those children who have not returned their holiday homework or Millennium Bridge project should do so by next week and those children who are interested in becoming the class school council representative should prepare a speech for our vote.
