Well done to the whole of Year 5 – and their parents –  for all those lovely costumes and “book in a box” activities for World Book Day! We were completely blown away!

Maths – We shall be continuing our unit of fractions. This week, our learning objectives are:

I can find fractions of an amounts

I can convert between fractions and decimals.

I can read, write and order decimals.​

English – We shall be continuing our new topic, Travel Brochures. We will be researching, planning and writing our own guide to Whitby.

Science – We shall be looking at comparing life cycles.

Computing – We shall be creating a quiz this week, on Scratch!

Reading – We shall be continuing our new class novel, Room 13 by Robert Swindells. Thanks to the Friends of Howard for our lovely class sets of books so that we can all read along! Image result for room 13

PE – We have swimming on Tuesdays and our PE session on Thursdays.

French – We shall be continuing to look at the weather.

Art – We shall be drawing images from photographs, based on areas around Whitby.

Geography – We shall be looking at the location of Whitby, in relation to the UK.

Music lessons will be taught by our Soundstart teacher, Mr Regan.

SPRING TERM 2 TOPIC: Traditional Tales

LITERACY:

Book Focus: Three Billy Goats Gruff

The children will read and recall the main events of this entertaining traditional tale. We will explore descriptive language to write descriptions of the characters.

MATHS: This week we will focus on the language of subtraction eg less, fewer, take away, minus, subtract

PSED/HSC: We will discuss stranger danger and the importance of not sharing personal information with people we do not know (using our focus story as stimulus for discussion) [/dropshadowbox]

My own Gingerbread story

We have been using our imagination to create a new adventure for the Gingerbread man. What adventure do you think he could have next if he escaped from the fox? Where would he go? What would he do? Who would he meet? Draw a picture and write a few sentences about Gingerbread man’s next adventure.

Year 4 Week Beginning 11th March 2019

What are we learning this week?

Maths – This week we will be continuing our work on fractions, calculating fractions of a quantity including unit and non-unit fractions.

English – To continue our Rainforest theme, this week we will be exploring persuasive letters as a writer.

Science-To compliment our rain forest topic we will be looking at classifying animals, including vertebrates and invertebrates.

 

P.E-We will be starting a gymnastics unit and continuing our circuit training. P.e will continue to be every Monday and Tuesday. Those going to Netball and football clubs need to remember to bring their kits back in to avoid having to miss p.e.

Music- We will be continuing songs and music about global warming.

Hopefully spring is upon us!

This week

In Literacy we shall be planning  writing a newspaper report on the deaths of Romeo and Juliet .

Maths.

We shall continue with ratio in our numeracy sessions as well as preparing the children for the forthcoming tests.

 

RE we shall be looking at how Buddhist monks express their faith and the reasons behind those choices

 

PE we shall continue our exploration of Pilates and its Eastern connection, with breath control and meditative poses.

Guided Reading

Our bi-weekly reading with an adult sessions  are continuing to prepare the children for the Reading Comprehension element of the SAT s test.

Many books exist in WH Smith or Amazon to support children in their acquisition of these life long skills.

In our WW2 topic we shall be looking at rationing  and the make do and mend culture that was promoted for almost a decade after the end of the war.

Spelling Punctuation And Grammar(SPAG)

Is a key area of language development and numerous resources are widely available to bolster children’s progress in this field.

Science. We continue to manipulate and devise classification systems and criteria for living things

Extra Information.

We are nearing  the dramatic completion of ‘Holes’ and are soon to begin reading ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Week beginning 4th March

Writing

The children had so many ideas for their alien booklets that we have only just finished writing them! Therefore, we will be starting our work on the losing tale Monkey Puzzle this week. Please see the blog post from last week for more information!

Maths

We will be using our knowledge of finding one quarter (dividing the whole into four equal parts) to find three quarters. Our final learning objective for our work on fractions will be to count in fractions. We will then be spending a day recapping calculating strategies before doing our shape assessment.

Our next unit will be measurement: length.

 History

We are looking at the Race to Space.

Science

We will be continuing our work on plants.

PE

We will be using the Real PE scheme of work this half term.

Monday 4th March, 2019

We have an exciting week ahead ! Pancake Day is on Tuesday 5th March and we celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7th March. Children can dress up as any of their favourite character. 

Please do not buy expensive costumes…There is a special prize for the most creative costume. 

Children will bring home a Book voucher which you can use in all main book shops.

Our new context is “It’s Raining ! It’s Pouring!” Please check your child’s homework book for this term’s curriculum overview.

It is linked to Geography and children will explore and identify weather patterns in UK as well as learn about location of hot and cold countries in relation to the Equator and North and South Poles.

English

We will be revisiting ‘poetry’ and exploring weather poems especially rain poems. Children will read and perform poems. Children will work with partners to read and identify features of poems like title, poet, rhyming words, stanzas/verses, repetitive words / phrases, onomatopoeic words, They will generate rain words and write their own rain poems.

Maths

We will consolidate arrays in  multiplication and understand division by sharing as well as grouping. We will revisit doubling and halving numbers.

Science

Children will continue their learning about classifying animals into herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

Geography

Children will explore weather patterns by looking at the weather patterns in UK .

Art

We will be exploring patterns and creating patterns for umbrellas.

P.E

Children will continue their learning by making different body shapes like tuck, pike, straddle, dish, arch etc… and also begin to do different rolls like a log roll, egg role and a teddy roll.

 

PSHE

We will revisit our five core values and discuss good behaviours for learning.

R.E

We will be looking at Christianity and the significance of the church as a place of worship for the Christians.

This week –  Home work:– Designing a ‘Book in a Box’ or design a character using a potato.

The children in Waterloo Bridge Class have settled back to learning well after the half term break. This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will begin a unit on statistics. We will create and interpret tables, bar charts and pictograms.
  • In English we will create a storyboard and retell the story of Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit.
  • In science we will begin work on famous scientists.
  • In topic time we will plan an eyewitness account on the destruction of Pompeii.
  • In RE we will look at why the Bible is a special book for Christians.

Book Focus: The Gingerbreadman

Last week the children brought the story to life when they baked their own Gingerbreadmen. This week we will explore new possibilities for this much-loved character. What adventures will he have next?

MATHS: This week we return to our focus on number skills, moving on to number stories to develop their understanding of addition and subtraction, using the part whole model method.

Understanding the World: This week we will discuss the significance of Pancake Day for some people. [/dropshadowbox]

My Favourite Traditional Tale

A traditional tale is a story that has been told for many years, stories which parents and grandparents would have read about when they were very young too. Which is your favourite traditional tale? Can you draw a picture of your favourite traditional tale? Ask your adult to help you write a sentence about it.

READING BOOKS:

WORD LISTS: It is pleasing to see how well the children are progressing through their word lists but please remember to go back to previous lists every so often to practise as the children do forget these words if they don’t see them often enough. Also ask them to point out these words in stories they read with you.

MATHLETICS: You will shortly receive more information about this fun online resource which will support your child’s Maths learning. You will receive a letter explaining how to access the resources and your child will receive a password and username card which we will stick on the last page of the reading diary. You should receive this by the end of the week.
