Week beginning 6th May 2019

The mystery has been solved! Last week 6 beautiful little ducklings hatched from the eggs which arrived last Tuesday. They will spend their final week in Chelsea Class and return to the farm on Friday so please come in and visit, preferably at the end of each day this week.

The children will have their class and individual photos taken on Tuesday 7th May. Please ensure they are in full school uniform. If they are in summer uniform, please send in their school jumpers too. Also just a reminder that only black school shoes must be worn.

Please remember to check the weather each day and dress your child appropriately for the weather. On warmer days your child may wear their summer uniform and please provide a sunhat or cap as the midday  sun can be quite harsh.

Week Beginning 6th May 2019

It is a short week this week as school is closed on Monday due to the bank holiday. This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will work on telling the time. We will learn to tell the time to the nearest minute on clocks including those with Roman Numerals.
  • In English we will start a new unit of work based on I was there – Boudica’s Army by Hilary McKay.
  • In science we will investigate what plants need to grow.
  • In topic time we will learn about the Roman Army.
  • In RE we will continue to learn about what Christians believe about God.
  • In PE we will continue with our work on gymnastics. We will also begin learning to play Basketball, each Thursday, with an external coach.

Year 4 News-Week beginning 7th May

Our Learning this week:

English-We will be finishing our unit of work based on the short film Origins, thinking about writing show not tell descriptions and inventing an alternative ending. See below if you would like to watch with your child

An enormous thank you and well done to Leen, Emiliana, Lucy and Ryan who organised Wear It Wild this week. It was an amazing success. Although we do not have a final figure yet, it looks as though Howard School has raised around £500! Well done!

We also need to give a special thank you to all the parents who donated cakes or time or found the time to provide a costume for their child. Without you, none of it would happen.

Children will learn about the features of instructions and will sequence pictures and write instructions for brushing teeth and plant beans. They will also edit their writing. Our focus text is Jasper’s Beanstalk and children will sequence events and write the story.

Maths

Children will continue their learning about place value, comparing numbers using greater than > and lesser than<. They will recap number bonds to 10, 20 and multiples of 10 to 100.

Children will observe seasonal changes ‘Spring’ and describe weather patterns and understand how day length varies. They will also continue learning about the names of common flowers and plants  including deciduous and evergreen trees.

The mysterious eggs will be arriving on Tuesday and we hope to have hatchlings by the end of the week.  You are welcome to come in and have a look at the process, preferably at the end of the school day. The eggs will be in an incubator and will spend the first week in Grosvenor Class. Thereafter moving to Chelsea Class in the second week.

Also, we look forward to Friday’s Wear it Wild Day. Remember you don’t have to buy a special costume for this day. Get your child involved in creating their own costume or a fun mask of an endangered animal to wear to school on Friday. Donations of £1 go to the WWF charity for their efforts to protect endangered animals.

This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will continue our work on fractions. We will learn to compare, order, add and subtract fractions.
  • In English we will learn about the features of a narrative poem. We will plan and write our own poems.
  • In science we will learn about the parts of a plant.
  • In topic time we will learn about the Roman invasion of Britain.

Writing

This week we will be moving onto a new piece of writing which will be based on a picture book called Tuesday by David Weisner. We will be doing drama in the role of a police officer and witnesses. The children will also be looking at the features of a police report before we write one as a class.

Our end goal is to write a police report based on the story.

Maths

We will be continuing with our work on statistics this week before completing an assessment on position and direction.

We will be interpreting pictograms where the pictures represent amounts greater than 1. Have a look at some example below…

The key shows that each smiley face represents two aliens. Therefore half of a smiley face represents one alien. 4          aliens like maggots because 2+2=4. Three aliens like slugs eye balls the most since 2+1=3.

We will also be looking at block diagrams. These can be presented horizontally or vertically.

History

We will be looking at a new artist: Khandinsky. Our focus will be on his use of ‘hot and cold’ colours.

Geography 

We will be using atlases to look at the countries, capital cities and seas in the United Kingdom.

Science

Our new topic is all about animals and habitats. We will be looking at things that are living, non-living and have never lived. Over the half term we will also be exploring a range of habitats including: the rainforest, desert and ocean We will be looking at how humans keep healthy as part of this unit.

PE

We are going to be making the most of the good weather this term. We will be doing ball skills with tennis/ basketball and skipping.
