Dear Parents, Carers

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend the Maths workshops on Thursday. We appreciate your constructive feedback and we are glad that you enjoyed engaging in the activities to find out how your child will learn Maths in Reception.

This will be the final week of the Autumn 1 half term. It has been a pleasure getting to know your children and to see how they have settled so quickly into school routines. Please note that school will finish at the regular time of 3.30pm on Friday, 18th October. Children will return to school on Tuesday, 29th October at 8.50am as usual.

AUTUMN TERM TOPIC: All about me

LITERACY:

Book Focus: Owl Babies by Martin Wadell

Through a shared reading of this classic tale about a family of beautiful owls, the children will learn to recall and retell a story by creating a class story map. They will learn to use vocabulary such as ‘First, Then, Next, Last’ or ‘At the end’, learning actions to help them recall the meaning of these words. They will also learn where to locate information about a book such as the title and author of a book

MATHS

This week our Maths focus will be to learn to count reliably within numbers 0-5 and to recognise and form each of the numerals 0 to 5 [/dropshadowbox]

Letter and word hunt (print in the environment)

Which letters and words can you see on your way home? Ask your adult to help you write some of the words you see around you.

You could also find words you recognise in magazines or newspapers. You could cut these out and stick them in your book eg names of shops/places you visit eg TESCO McDonald’s, etc

Please note that no homework will be issued on Fri 18th as it is the last day of term. Homework will resume after half term.

READING BOOKS AND DIARY

Please send in both books and yellow diaryon group days. Please note that after Mon 14th Oct Red group will have their books changed again after the half term on Tuesday 29th October together with Blue group due to Monday 28th October being part of their half term.[/dropshadowbox]

Friday 8th November 2019: Family Friday. You are welcome to come into class from 8.30 to 9.00 to share in your child’s learning

Week Beginning 14th October

The children enjoyed their visits to Get Fired last week and produced some beautiful artwork. Their tiles have been left in Get Fired to be fired in their kiln. The children will be able to take their tiles home after the half term holiday.

This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will continue to use formal written methods to carry out addition and subtraction calculations. We will learn to check our answers using inverses.
  • In English we will write instructions for making a Stone Age tile.
  • In science we will test the strength of different magnets.
  • In topic time we will continue our learning on the Stone Age.

Week Beginning 14th October 2019

English – Writing

The children were introduced to Lotte’s Reiniger’s version of Hansel and Gretel and they are familiar with the story.  This week the children will be retelling the story of Hansel and Gretel in their own words. They will use their story mountain and their knowledge of the video to help them.

We will encourage the children to show us the characters’ journey through their use of language. We will be looking for:

  • use of adventurous adjectives to describe nouns
  • different sentence types – questions, commands, statements and exclamations
  • conjunctions in order to join sentences together
  • different sentence starters
  • correct use of capital letters and full stops.

Later on, in the week, the children will write an apology letter to the witch from Hansel or Gretel. We will first look at features of an apology letter before we write our own.

 

English- reading
We will continue with our whole class read: Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. We will also be learning some new reading skills as a whole class using ERIC. The children will build their repertoire of different reading skills through the year.

Maths 

We will continue with the addition and subtraction block.

  • to add a 1-digit to 2-digit number (bridging)
  • to add a 1-digit to 2-digit number (PV chart)
  • to subtract 1-digit from 2-digit number (number lines)
  •  to subtract 1-digit from 2-digit number (PV chart)

Last week the children began to plan their letter to Amy Johnson. All of the children were fully immersed. This week children will use their plan to write a letter to Amy Johnson
Science
We will be exploring the useful properties of a range of materials. We will be looking at different objects, thinking about what materials they are made from, and explain why they are suitable in each situation.
ICT

Our ICT slot is on Tuesday afternoon. This week we will continue to explore programming. We are the programmers of the future!

Music 

Ministrings will continue every Wednesday. This week we will play some instruments that belong in the string family. Children will take part in a Harvest Assembly.

PE
Our PE slot is on Monday afternoon. We are currently focusing on balance and co-ordination.
Please ensure all children have their full PE kit in school (fully named).
PSHE
We have introduced the children to a programme called Zones of Regulation which we are hoping will help regulate feelings and emotions and offer the children the correct way to talk about their feelings. This week  we will continue to  think of suitable ways to regulate their feelings and match emotions to different zones.

We shall be visiting the Fairfield Halls on Wednesday 16th October 2019 for a concert, which shall be held by Whitgift School, we shall return in time for lunch.

Maths – We shall be looking at multiplication and division over the next two weeks, using both written and mental strategies.

English – Over this half term, our lessons shall be based on our class reading book Goodnight Mister Tom and our topic The Second World War. This week, we shall be starting our new unit of War Poetry. We shall be learning to recite, read and comment on a range of war poetry whilst using video imagery to inspire our own ideas.

Science – Our topic this half term is Electricity. This week, we shall be looking at circuit symbols and identifying whether a circuit will work or not.

PSHE – We shall be learning about New Beginnings.

RE – Our RE lessons shall be taught by Mrs Forde. This half term’s unit is Buddhism.

PE –  On Fridays we have our Basketball sessions and on Tuesdays we have our Swimming sessions. Please make sure that your child has their full PE kit in school.

Spanish – We shall be learning show to ask and talk about my name, extend our numbers from 1-10 up to 20 and continue to showcase our homework.

History –Over the next two weeks, we shall be learning about the role of women during WW2.

Computing – We shall be continuing to look at online safety this half term.

Thank you for coming to the Phonics Workshop last week and for your valuable feedback.

From Monday 7th October your child will receive a colour banded reading scheme book as well as a library book. Please support your child to develop their early skills for reading by:
• looking at the cover of book and predicting what the book might be about
• talking about the pictures and asking them to tell you what is happening
• If the book contains decodable words, show them how to sound out the letters and blend together to read.

Please don’t forget to come to the Maths Workshop on THURSDAY, 10th October 2019. You can choose to attend either ONE of the two sessions: 9.00-10.00 or 2.00-3.00. This workshop will focus on how your child will learn the skills to develop their mathematical thinking and understanding.

Please help your child settle into their school routine by being prompt in the morning and at collection time. Please be reminded that school starts at 8.50am and finishes at 3.30pm.

Our learning this week…

English

We will read the new text call ‘ Lila and the secret rain’ by David Conway & Jude Daly. The children will be looking at the picture of the setting to predict the story. On Wednesday, they will discuss and write about Lila’s feelings, thoughts and journey. On Thursday and Friday, they will be learning how to make a story planner.

Maths

Children will count objects and begin to understand 1 more than / 1 less than a given number

Your child will also be comparing numbers using mathematical vocabulary – more, greater than /fewer, less, lesser than as well as begin how to understand how to use the symbols > and < correctly.

Science

We continue our learning about the body focusing on the five senses,

 

Phonics

Please continue to practice sound recognition with your child. Encourage them to apply their phonic knowledge every time you read or write with them.

Handwriting

We will be learning to form the numbers correctly and begin to learn the cursive script starting with letter o.

PSHE

We will be learning about the 5 C’s – care, commitment, courtesy, co-operation and consideration and also begin to develop an understanding of being a Rights Respecting School.

Art

In Art, we are learning about Line and tone and children will look at their face using a mirror and explore how to draw a self-portrait.

PE:

This term we will be discussing about traveling. Children showcase different ways of traveling. Children will also develop core body strength by balancing.

ICT:

We will introduce the children to the story of Hansel & Gretel, in order to do this we will watch Lotte Reiniger’s version of Hansel and Gretel.

The children will storymap Hansel & Gretel in  order to familiarise themselves with the story and in order to understand the structure of the story.

We will also explore character descriptions, focusing on both personality and appearance.  Children will have a guided reading session based on the story of Hansel & Gretel.
