Week Beginning 4th November

The children have settled into school well following the half term holiday. This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will work on multiplication and division. We will learn to multiply and divide by three and four and to use our multiplication and division facts to solve problems.
  • In English we will continue to explore the film “For the Birds” We will also learn about the features of a film review.
  • In science we will learn to recognise light sources.
  • In history we will create a tourist information leaflet on Skara Brae.

Week beginning 28th October 2019

Maths – We shall be looking at simplifying fractions, ordering fractions and adding fractions with unrelated denominators.

English – Over this half term, our lessons shall be based on our class reading book Goodnight Mister Tom and our topic The Second World War. This week, we shall be starting our new unit of War Poetry. We shall be learning to recite, read and comment on a range of war poetry whilst using video imagery to inspire our own ideas.

Science – Our topic this half term is Electricity. This week, we shall be looking at planning an investigation and looking at the importance of variables.

PSHE – We shall be learning about New Beginnings.

PE –  On Fridays we have our Basketball sessions and on Tuesdays we have our Swimming sessions. Please make sure that your child has their full PE kit in school.

History – We shall be researching about The Blitz.

Computing – We shall be continuing to look at online safety this half term.

Week Beginning 28th October

Welcome back to everyone after the half term holiday. This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematic we will be working on geometry. We will be learning to recognize angles as a property of shape or turn and to find right angles and angles bigger or smaller than right angles.
  • In English we will start a new unit on film. We will start by exploring a short film entitled For the Birds.
  • In science we will introduce a new topic on light and dark.
  • In history we will learn about the Stone Age settlement at Skara Brae.
  • In RE we will learn about how and why Hindus celebrate Diwali.

Please note that school re-opens for children on Tuesday 29th October 2019 at the usual time of  8.50. Please arrive promptly by 8.50am  as the children will be starting early morning activities once they arrive at 8.50am.

Please remember to send your child's PE kit back to school as well as any reply slips for parent evenings and for our visit to the Whitgift school wildlife area.

AUTUMN 2 TOPIC: Light and Dark

This week’s learning

LITERACY

Phonics: This term the children will begin learning letter sounds in Phonics lessons. They will learn to say, recognise and write one new letter sound each day.

This week’s sound focus: /s/, /a/, /t/ and /p/

The children will bring home a daily sound sheet. Please help them with letter formation and practise ‘stretching’ or ‘bouncing’ the initial sound for each of the pictures on the sheet sent home

MATHS

This week’s Maths focus: Counting with accuracy within 1-5

KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

This week we will introduce our new topic: Light and Dark, and explore the first of several celebration during this half term. The children will learn about the Hindu celebration of Diwali also known as the festival of lights. We will also discuss fireworks and the safety of handling these. [/dropshadowbox]

Well done to the children who received certificates for completing all their homework in Autumn Term 1. Keep up the good work and they will receive another certificate at the end of Autumn 2 too.

Monday 28th October – INSET DAY

English – Writing

The children were introduced to Lotte’s Reiniger’s version of Hansel and Gretel and they are familiar with the story.

The children will write an apology letter to their parents, aplogising for venturing into the terrifying woods. We will first look at features of an apology letter before we write our own.

English- reading
We will continue with our whole class read: Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. We will also be learning some new reading skills as a whole class using ERIC. The children will build their repertoire of different reading skills through the year.
Maths  We will continue with the addition and subtraction block.

Children will continue to write their letter to Amy Johnson. In their letter they will include information about her achievements and they will tell her the public perception of her. The children will also ask Amy Johnson questions.
Science

We will be thinking about how materials change shape.  The children will recognise that some materials cannot change shape, whilst others may but this change will not always be permanent.

ICT
Our ICT slot is on Tuesday afternoon. This week we will continue to explore programming. We are the programmers of the future!
Music 
Ministrings will continue every Wednesday. This week we will play some instruments that belong in the string family.
PE
Our PE slot is on Monday afternoon. We are currently focusing on balance and co-ordination.
Please ensure all children have their full PE kit in school (fully named).
Art
Children will be drawing lines of different shapes and thickness, using different grades of pencil. The children will create different tones using light and dark. The children will also show patterns and textures in their drawings.
PSHE
We have introduced the children to a programme called Zones of Regulation which we are hoping will help regulate feelings and emotions and offer the children the correct way to talk about their feelings. This week  we will continue to  think of suitable ways to regulate their feelings and match emotions to different zones.
