Week commencing 15th October

Please find an update about what we will be learning in Millennium next week;

English- We will be continuing to read Robin Hood by Marcia Williams. This week we will be starting to write our own versions of The Golden Arrow, focusing on a strong beginning, middle and ending and thinking about characterisation. We are also hoping to see correctly used fronted adverbials and homophones!

Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.

Maths- We are continuing to work on column addition of 4 digit numbers. We will be moving from no exchanges to multiple exchanges over the course of the week.

In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.

Topic- Our topic for the Autumn term is Vikings and Anglo- Saxons. We will be learning about the cultures of both the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons. This week will be writing a thank you letter to our fabulous Viking visitor Peter Quirk who really helped to bring the Vikings alive for us this week (see separate blog for pictures) and beginning to look at the sagas.

Science- Our focus this term is teeth and digestion. We will be designing our own scientific enquiry about tooth decay.

The children will be expected to read every day and practise their multiplication tables in addition to other work that is given. This week I have asked the children to log on to Mathletics and complete the  assigned tasks and to complete a research task, finding out about a famous person who has contributed to equality and anti-discrimination. They may present their findings in any way they wish and have until the 19th of October to complete this task . They are then free to explore the rest of Mathletics if they wish and can follow the link to Spellodrome.

Successes- Well done to Eddie, Keona, Shania and Pyman who recieved merits this week.

Our focus for this week is retelling a section of the story with actions and boxing up the key events in preparation for writing our own version. We will be moving on to adding our own innovations, concentrating on planning with a coherent plot and strong beginning, middle and end to the story.

Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.

Maths- We are revising place value. We will be moving on to addition and subtraction. We will begin by revising the Year 3 objectives before moving on to adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers with exchanging.

In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.

This week we are very excited to have our Viking visitor in school. On Tuesday, all children should dress in costume and will participate in a day long workshop.

Science- Our focus this term is teeth and digestion. We will be looking at the types of teeth and learning about their function.

Maths- We are revising place value. We will be rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred, working up to four digit numbers.

In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.

English- We will be starting a new unit of work using the text Robin Hood by Marcia Williams. We will read the text and practise our comprehension skills. This will lead up to a piece of narrative writing. Alongside this, we will be focusing on adverbs and fronted adverbials.

Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.

Maths- We are revising place value. We are continuing to work on comparing and ordering numbers and will be placing numbers on a number line.

In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.

Welcome to Millennium Bridge class! I hope you all had an amazing summer and are excited to be back at school! We have had a really good first few days and I hope that this is set to continue.

English- We have been using a video clip about Nemo’s first day of school as a prompt for our writing. We have imagined the underwater school and thought about the feelings of Nemo and his Dad. We will be using this to inspire both a diary entry and a letter reassuring Dad that Nemo will be safe at school.

Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.

Maths- We are revising place value. We have thought about the value of each digit in  number. We will be moving on to counting in thousands, finding a thousand more or less than a given number and comparing and ordering 4 digit numbers.

I can’t believe we have got to the end of the year already! Thank you all for your support this year. I have really enjoyed teaching Millennium class and I wish you all luck in Year 5!

 

Our topic for this term is called ”Temples, Tombs and Treasures’ linked to our HISTORY curriculum about Ancient Egypt.

Your child has taken home a homework sheet to cover the homework for the whole half term. Please choose  another activity to complete for homework this week. We have had some fantastic work so far! I have attached an electronic copy of the homework below in case the paper copy is lost  Homework-Egyptians

In English, we will be looking at poetry and drama over the final days of the term. We have been reading list poetry and looking at features and effective language. We have also been using this as an opportunity to practise the plural apostrophe of possession.

In Maths, we will be continuing a unit of work on Geometry, covering properties of shapes and position and direction, plotting of coordinates and simple translation of position.

We have also started to use a mental Maths game called Daily 10 which you can find a link to below

I have also asked those children who are less confident to continue to practise time (including digital, analogue and 24 hour time) and money, including coin recognition, for when we revisit these units.
