Millennium

week commencing 19th February

February 19, 2018

Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:

English- We will be beginning a new unit of work based around persuasive writing. We will be looking for the key features for a persuasive letter and then work towards writing our own persuasive letters about halting the destruction of the rainforests.

Maths- We will be working on the most efficient way to multiply 2 digit by 1 digit numbers and also beginning to think about measuring area and simple coordinates.

Alongside this we will be doing a weekly times table challenge and working towards membership of the 100 or 144 club and I would like all children to work hard on their tables to achieve this!

Reading- All children read with an adult at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme. After this adult led session they complete tasks relating to the text or linked to current English and Spelling focuses. We continue to read stories as a class.

ICT- We are still holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.

This week in ICT we will be continuing our fact-files about the rainforest animals they have researched.

PE- PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and children will need their PE kits. I would also like to remind you that the school policy is that all earrings should be removed, hair should be tied back and tights should be removed when getting changed.

I would also ask that PE kits stay in school between Monday and Friday as occasionally we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in additional activities.

This half term we will be doing Gym sequences, including methods of travelling including a jump, and a Boot camp of circuits to improve fitness, stamina and muscle tone and will continue to run the daily mile.

Topic- Our topic for this term is rainforests. We will be learning about their strata and make up, the animals and people who live there and the effects of deforestation and pollution. We will now be moving on to learning about the types of plants found in the rainforest which can be used for medicines, using the book The Shaman’s Apprentice.

PSHE- We will be starting a new scheme of work called Apple’s friends which will help children to understand their feelings and relationships with others. There will also be some simple tasks for the children to complete at home.

In addition to this we will be doing some lessons focusing on the differences between helpful and unhelpful pressure and the benefit of talking to trusted adults when the need arises.

Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday.

In addition to tasks given out I expect the children to read every day and continue to practise the multiplication tables.

I will be collecting the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly.

Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading.

If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note.

Successes– Well done to AJ, Yuliana and Zamira who achieved merits this week! Well done to Rainbow table who won our last table points competition! Well done to Aishu who has reached the 100 club!

Additional information- Here are some useful dates for the diary.

1st and 14th March- Parent teacher meetings will take place.

Many thanks for all your support in raising money for the NSPCC! The children had a fabulous time with our sports and Maths treasure hunt.
