Hungerford1

Welcome to Hungerford Bridge Class.

Class teacher: Miss Agyemang

Teaching assistant: Ms Jones

Week beginning 11th December 2017

December 8, 2017

This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:

Writing

We will be moving onto a new piece of writing about the Christmas story. We will be recapping what we know about the story and sequencing it. We will then be re-telling the story from a different perspective. For example: from the viewpoint of a star, a king or the innkeeper.

Phonics/ SPaG

We have been working on phase 6 and will continue to do so. We will be focusing on homophones including their, they’re and there as well as to, too and two.

Maths

We are continuing to focus on addition and subtraction which we hope to have finished before Christmas. We have been focusing on subtracting one digit numbers from two digit numbers this week. Please see my example below.

This, combined with our other recent learning (please see the blog for the previous week) will he helpful when we come to think about how to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers. We will be doing this without crossing the tens boundary (e.g 65+22 or 65-22) and then moving on to crossing tens e.g 65+27 or 65=27).

A useful strategy for addition is:

Example: 54+21=

4 ones + 1 one= 5 ones

5 tens + 2 tens= 7 tens

__ tens + __ ones=__

This is partitioning and recombining

A useful strategy for subtraction is:

Example: 79-13=

            79

       70     9

      -10    -3

       60     6

How can you help to develop your child’s number fluency?

  • Continue practicing counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
  • Ask them to show you what they have been doing in school.
  • Practice times tables.
  • Quick recall of halves and doubles (for numbers within 100)
  • Partitioning numbers in different ways (e.g all of the ways to make 13).
  • Give your child a number – how many more do we need to add to get to the nearest multiple of 10? What about if we were subtracting? For example: 56 (we have to add four to get to 60 or subtract 6 to get to 50). This helps them to recognise that we do not need to do individual jumps on a numberline when calculating.
  • Give children a number and ask them what the value of each digit is. For example, 96 (the 9 has a value of 90 and the 6 has a value of 6).

PSHE

We have started the Zippy’s Friends project which will run for most of the year. After each of the six modules we will send home an activity for your child to complete. This will give you an insight to what it is all about. Please speak to your child about these sessions as they are all very excited about the project! So far we have looked at feelings of sadness, anger and jealousy. We will be sending some related homework home shortly.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The year 2 Christmas show will be taking place on Thursday 14th December at 2:15pm. You will be able to collect your child straight after the performance if you wish to, though please let us know if this is the case.

Your children have been given letters in regards to their costumes- please check book bags.

All costumes need to be in school by Wednesday 13th December. Please place them in a named carrier bag and leave them on your child’s peg. Thank you

ALSO:

Homework

We have sent home a SPaG booklet which is due back in January. I have also set mathletics homework this week. You can find your child’s login at the back of their reading record.

Christmas jumper day is next Friday (15th December). There is a £1 donation that will go to the Save the Children charity organisation.

Christmas parties will be taking place on Tuesday 19th December. More information will follow shortly.

Week beginning: 4th December 2017

November 30, 2017

This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:

Writing

We have almost come to the end of our film reviews and are ready to use our plans to write one up. They will include the following features: a synopsis, a star rating, opinions and reasons that we would/ would recommend the film.

Phonics/ SPaG

We have been working on phase 6 concepts. These include regular past tense verbs and using the past progressive tense e.g we were/ he was running/ jumping rather than ‘he jumped’ or ‘she ran’.

We will also be looking at homophones including their, they’re and there as well as to, too and two.

Maths

We are continuing to focus on addition and subtraction. We will be using our knowledge of adding multiples of 10 and adding one digit numbers to two digit numbers by bridging through ten to help us to subtract one digit numbers from two digit numbers e.g 65-7.

It is important that your child is secure with knowing the nearest multiple of ten for any given number. For example, if we are on the number 46, we know that we need to add four more to reach 50 or subtract 6 to reach 40. A strong understanding of number bonds to 10 will also support this.

Here is an example of how we can add one digit and two digit numbers. This understanding will help us with the concept of subtracting too. The children need to be secure in knowing the nearest multiple of 10 to any given number. For example:

We can then use this to help us to bridge through 10. Have a look at my example below.

PSHE

We have started the Zippy’s Friends project which will run for most of the year. After each of the six modules we will send home an activity for your child to complete. This will give you an insight to what it is all about. Please speak to your child about these sessions as they are all very excited about the project! So far we have discussed things that make us feel happy/ sad and what we can do to help us feel better. In this module we will also be looking at anger, jealousy and embarrassment. I was extremely impressed with the maturity shown by the whole class.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As you will know, we have given out scripts for those with speaking parts in our Christmas Performance. It is really coming on well but please encourage your children to practice their lines/ song words/ actions at home. We do not have many rehearsals left and want it to be the best show yet!

The show will be taking place on Thursday 14th December at 2:15pm. You will be able to collect your child straight after the performance if you wish to, though please let us know if this is the case.

Thank you for your continued support.
