SPRING TERM 1 TOPIC: Transport

LITERACY:

Book Focus: Mr Gumpy’s Outing by John Burningham

This week we focus on the characters in the story. The children will write short sentences about what the characters say to each other.

GROUP PHONICS: Group Phonics will continue this week with each group focusing on reviewing the sounds learnt and decoding new words as well learning how to spell and write these words.

MATHS: Over the next three weeks we will focus on developing children’s understanding of shape, space and measure. This week’s focus is:

• to develop an understanding of the concepts related to capacity such as container, full, half full and empty, nearly full, nearly empty

• The children will explore, through a range of practical activities, filling, comparing and measuring the capacity of different containers using different materials.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD:

• This week the children will explore and find out more about the parts of a vehicle and what makes it work

HEALTH AND SELF CARE

This week we will discuss what is meant by healthy foods, food we should eat sometimes and foods that are healthy and can be eaten most of the time.

MAKING RELATIONSHIPS

This week we will also discuss what it means to be a good a friend to someone and how to resolve a problem you may have with a friend.

Can you find pictures of different types of vehicles that can be used for transporting people and other things from one place to another? Please remember to write a label for each picture.

The children will enjoy this story about a very noisy boat trip with the main character Mr Gumpy. This week we focus on developing the language to sequence time by retelling the story using story maps and actions.

GROUP PHONICS: Group Phonics will continue this week with each group focusing on reviewing the sounds learnt and decoding new words as well learning how to spell and write these words.

KEY WORD LISTS: Please only send in word lists if your child is ready to be tested. Please note that there isn’t any rush for your child to race through the lists. It is more important that they have secure recognition of these words before moving onto the next list.

MATHS: This term we focus on securing number skills within 0-10. This week we will focus on:

• Finding the total number of items in two groups by counting all of them. • Saying the number that is one more than a given number.

• Finding one more or one less from a group of up to ten objects.

• In practical activities and discussion, use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting.

• Begin to represent a number story using numerals and symbols for addition and subtraction [/dropshadowbox]
