PSHE/Philosophy for Children: If children were to rule our world (as once suggested by Astrid Lindgren and a famous German singer called Herbert Grönemeyer), what would our world be like? Describe in as much detail as possible. For example, Grönemeyer said that there would only be armies made of Gummibears (not humans anymore), tanks would be made out of marzipan (so wars would just be eaten up), there would be no good and bad, right and wrong, but a life-time supply of strawberry ice-cream. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiqWrSAFvow) You get the idea. Have fun with your thought-experiment.

RE: Search the internet for Art associated/linked to Easter. Explain the meaning of that Art or the symbols used. As an example, where Mr Grundey comes from, people decorate eggs in the most incredible designs. Eggs represent new beginnings. What is a new beginning for you personally?

Music: There is plenty you could do today.

Task 1 – Choose a song and create new lyrics for it (you could even record yourself). After Easter, Mr Regan will give you a set of tasks linked to song writing.

Task 2 – Read through the text and tell me … History-of-music-timeline-poster-_ver_4

a) one fact you knew already,

b) one fact you learnt from reading it,

Task 3 – Tell me what your favourite piece of music is and give me 3-5 reasons why you love that piece of music so much. Mr Grundey says, that one of his favourite pieces of music is called the Adagio by the Italian Baroque composer Tomaso Albinoni (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn1gcjuhlhg) Can you guess why?

Optional: – Find an instrument in your house (a pot/pan will do) and play a song of your choice (record and submit via dojo & don’t torture your neighbour, though).

Maths: Looking at metric units, please use the .pd file for reading. Write your answers into the .doc on the computer. Sp2-Wk6-L04-Metric Measurements – Instruction (.pdf) Sp2-Wk6-L04-MetricMeasurements (.doc)

English: Today and tomorrow, you will be writing up your Myth with a modern twist, so the instructions are very short. I have saved everything as .doc and .odt so you can download and write straight into the document – so there is no need to print anything. Please use the Success Criteria as a guidance and add your own 2 criteria. Once written, tomorrow you will need to read and edit/improve your writing on Friday. Then, please submit your text to me via dojo or email (howardyear5@gmail.com).

Reading: Read “Athena and the Olive Tree” ( Athena&TheOliveTree comp-jpeg ) and then answer the following questions:

    1. Summarise the story in your own words (max. 5 sentences).

    2. Give 3 different examples of figurative language in the text.

    3. Explain what is meant with, “Helios stopped the sun chariot stock-still in the sky”. What do you think about this choice of language?

    4. What had happened to Zeus’ first wife and why?

    5. Which city was called the “perfect city” and what made it so “perfect” (give 3+ examples)?

    6. Do you agree or disagree with Cecrops’ decision to dedicate the city to Athena? Explain.

    7. Explain how the Myth tells us about the origin of another great Greek city.

History: This is an open-ended task. Please create a poster about the most important city-states in Ancient Greece. Clearly list their strength, merits, weaknesses and 2-3 key figures/historical facts.

Geography: As the year 6 showed this year, the topic/skills of Grid-Reference is definitely something that needs serious practise. Therefore, please read the input and complete the attached two activities (starting with 4-figure grid reference and then moving on to 6-figure).

A small diet of tasks is flying in today.

Math: We will explore simple imperial measurements. Sp2-Wk6-L05 Imperial Measurements Instruction Sp2-Wk6-L05-ImperialMeasurements

English: Please use your work from yesterday. Read and reflect on it. Then edit it and remember to send it to me via dojo or email (howardyear5@gmail.com).

ICT: Since we are learning how to use word-processing (often affiliated with Microsoft Word, Publisher and PowerPoint), please use your work/research on Ancient Greek City-States and create an electronic piece of work to present that information, it could be a poster or a presentation – you choose.

This will practise: typing with increasing speed and fluency, making, moving and resizing text boxes, inserting and formatting pictures, changing the font, size, colour and position of the text, saving and printing, and finallydesigning PPT slides and altering transitions.

Have fun, but don’t get lost in front of the screen as that often happens to adults. Stay safe online!

Spanish: Visit the website https://www.digitaldialects.com/Spanish/Fruit.htm and first practise the words for the fruits and vegetables. Then, play the games with audio. You may also want to visit https://www.spanishplayground.net/fruit-spanish-kids/ and listen to the videos. To help you understand the videos better, go onto https://www.spanishplayground.net/spanish-words-kids-love-video-las-frutas/ and read through the vocabulary list.

Here are some flashcards from Twinkl (Fruit-Flashcards-Spanish_ver_1) and a vocabulary poster (Spanish-Fruit-Poster). Have fun.

Over the holidays, I will upload some videos and other activities about the topic.

Home Learning – Monday 30th March 2020

[dropshadowbox align="none" effect="lifted-both" width="auto" height="" background_color="#a8f6e0" border_width="1" border_color="#dddddd" ]Dear Reception Parents

We hope you are well and have now settled into your own steady routine for home learning that works for you and your family.

If you have any questions, please get in touch using the email address sent via text message to your phone last week. I will send a further reminder later today.

If you would like your child to continue with their weekly word lists, please respond via the email provided, with your child’s name and last word list they were on. Once I receive your email, word lists will be sent out on a weekly basis on your child’s usual group reading day.

You will also shortly be receiving further information about a sharing platform called Class Dojo which the older children now have access to. This will allow you to share some of the amazing learning your children are doing. Thank you for your patience as we explore new technology to improve our interaction with you and your children during this incredibly challenging period for us all.

Please see below for a suggested timetable of activities for this week. Please remember that there is no expectation for your child to complete all activities as we understand the challenging circumstances you may be facing during this time. It is more important that your children feel safe and secure first. We understand that this may be a very confusing time for them. So if you notice any changes in their behaviour over the coming weeks, please focus more on reassuring and comforting them.

If you would like to follow a set routine you are welcome to use the suggested timetable attached as a guide for the length of time to spend on the suggested activities. For links to suggested activities, please scroll down the page or scroll further down to access previous blog posts.

Wishing you well for the week ahead

Kind regards

Earth Hour 2020

Good morning everybody,

This is a message from Howard’s Eco Reps.

Over the last weeks, we had started to compile a range of activities we wanted to suggest to you for Earth Hour, which is tonight at 20:30. We will be switching our lights off to show our awareness of problems around the protection of Earth, sustainability, the responsible use of resources etc.

Check out the official website: https://www.earthhour.org/

Here are our suggestions:

  1. Task: Write a poem about or to nature sharing your admiration of nature, your concerns, your pledges (what you could do to help). Then read it to another person or – sounds strange – to a plant.
  2. A voice for the planet” – Letter writing: Pretending to be “Mother” or “Father Nature”, write a letter to an important (maybe not so eco-friendly person/politician/…) voicing your pains and concerns and ask for immediate, specific action.

  3. Writing Pledges: Write a pledge/plan of action that you promise to take in order to help protect our planet.

  4. An Earth-Hour Game: Create a game with an environmental topic (e.g. Taboo/Speak out, Pictionary … – Eco-Version of Monopoly might take very long, though).

      • e.g. Pick 10 Topic words (related to Earth Hour, the Environment, …) and write them on a card each.

      • Then, to each word, decide on 5 taboo words that must not be mentioned when explain/describing the topic word,

      • Play the game with a partner,

  5. Howard’s Eco Bunting: Create bunting with a clear about: Why it is important to use resources on our planet responsibly and sustainably (so that future generations have the same access to the resources like electricity, water etc.)

Remember to send your work (or a picture of it) to …

howardyear5@gmail.com

…so that we can display them on the blogs and website.

With a big thank you from your Eco Reps

Organising the day

Coronavirus_Social_StoryHome Daily Timetable

Some children need a visual reminder of what their day will be filled with. Using a visual timetable can help reduce the anxiety a child might feel about ‘what comes next’.  Time is a difficult concept to understand and transitioning from one activity to the next can be perceived as a threat or a punishment by some children. Have a look at the timetable I have attached to give you some ideas on how to put together a visual timetable. Sometimes just a NOW/NEXT prompt on a blank piece of paper will suffice.

Social stories are also useful to reduce anxiety because the message is repeated throughout the story. Have a look with your child at the social story about the Corona Virus and school closure.

Hi Year Four!

We hope that you are adjusting to your home learning experience at the end of the first full week and you are all keeping well.

If you have not had a chance to check it out already, please have a look at Class Dojo and send us a message.  Please join us on this forum as you and your child can email us, send and receive photos, videos and see daily tasks in one place. We have sent all parents an email inviting you to join but this is a learning curve as we have not used the programme before so please let us know via teacher to parent if you have not received the invite and we will endeavour to contact you in a different way.

We will also be adding home learning tasks (see the link below for a picture of what you should see)  via the to do section which we can post and share with all of you.

Class Dojo

As always, continue to read, using Get Epic or your own books or books you have borrowed from school. We have added tasks to Mathletics and would love to hear about your experiences with Real PE and TT Rockstars.

New tasks for today’s home learning:
