  • Maths:

    • Arithmetics Starter:

      • Yesterday’s solutions:

      • Today’s Mental arithmetics will be a little times-tables task again.

      • Complete this set of ‘SpaG tasks:

    • Main-Task – Due to the fact that today’s lesson on BBC Bitesize hits one of the big targets that was on our to-do-list, we are going to split the main task into two.

        1. Visit BBC Bitesize and complete the “Using modal verbs” lesson including for all the activities 1 & 2, most should also at least complete parts of activity 3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/znd26v4

        2. To refocus on the use of commas, please read and watch: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zc773k7

          • Let’s particularly look at commas in Subordination. Remember that …

            • a subordinated clause is dependent on the main clause and gives additional information,

            • the main clause carries the key information,

            • the subordinated clause starts with a subordinating conjunction (although, because, even though, if, lest, since, though, until, when, whenever, …) or relative pronoun (which, who, that, whose …).

              • I saw a Wabub”

            • When the subordinated clause starts the sentence, a comma follows before the main clause.

              • When I opened the door, the two little monsters came running at me.

            • When using relative clauses and the subordinated clause (after the relative pronoun) is essential (restrictive) for the meaning and understanding of the main clause, no comma is needed.

              • I enjoy helping others who might find things difficult. (Without the relative clause we wouldn’t know who the others are.)

            • When using relative clauses and the subordinated clause (after the relative pronoun) is nonessential (non-restrictive) for the main clause (non important information that could be left out is added), a comma is needed.

              • I enjoy visiting my friend Thomas, who researches bats. (This assumes that you don’t have lots of different friends called Thomas, though.)

Reading: Listen to chapter 21 (Circus Boy) and please answer the following questions.

https://www.spreaker.com/user/12356852/chapter-21-circus-boy

        1. By what time was the tent erected?

        2. At what time are the lanterns being lit?

        3. Find two similes at the start of the chapter.

        4. How did the circus children know the people were coming?

        5. Which acts could the people see at the circus?

        6. Why were Jim and Antonio showered with orange peel and nutshells?

        7. When was the circus going to be moving on?

        8. How do we know Jim was looking forward to marching in the procession?

        9. Find five adjectives to describe the horses?

        10. Why might Jim want to stand up and shout hooray for the circus?

        11. Why did the Madame look peering and anxious?

        13. Who arrived at the circus?

        14. How will Jim be feeling at the end of the chapter?

        15. What might Jim do next and why?

Extension: Despite its sometimes negative aura, a circus can be incredibly fascinating. Why not check out …

      • the mind-blowing, Montreal based “Cirque du soleil”? → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL0TG_nCqzE (If you are a little impatient, fast forward into the middle of the video and you grip tightly to your chair → utter madness),

Music: Please visit and practise the 3rd session on “Making Music” – Today’s awesome teacher is Mr Holland

https://www.cma-online.co.uk/making-music (PW: makingmusic123)

        16. How do we know that Mr Juglini was a friendly person?

        17. At the end of the chapter, what might Jim have wanted to say?

Science: Today’s task or investigation will be particularly exciting and messy, because you get to mix different substances and then try to separate them again.

  • To document today’s work, I would like you to create two posters (one for each investigation) with steps and pictures (can be on a PowerPoint® presentation) of your investigation.

  • First, recap and record from your memory/experience. What can be used to separate …?

    1. rice from salt,

    2. ground coffee from coffee beans,

    3. stones from soil,

    4. pumpkin seeds from Shia seeds,

    5. sugar from lumps of sugar,

    6. (add your own example,

  • Now, create the following mixtures and then separate them.

      1. rice and sand (or water if you don’t have sand),

      2. ground coffee and water

      3. pasta and rice

      4. paper-clips and sand/soil

      5. (your choice),

  • Option/Challenge: Find 5 different substances, mix them and show us how you could separate them again over a series of steps.

  • Finally, I would like you to set up an experiment where we undo what we did with the sugar and the water last week. However, we will be using salt instead of sugar.

    • Predict: What happens when I leave salty water in the sun?

    • Set-up: Mix a cup full of water with 3 table-spoons of salt.

    • Method:

      • Option 1: Heat the mixture and observe what’s happening to the water and salt solution.

      • Option 2 (the more exciting one):

        • Put the mixture in a bowl.

        • Inside (middle) of the bowl, place a small beaker/cup/… (whatever fits).

        • Cover the bowl with cling-film and put a small weight in the middle of the cling-film so that it “points” towards the centre of the cup that is placed inside the bowl.

        • Leave your experiment on the window-sill in direct sunlight and observe over days what’s happening to the water and salt solution. (How long did it take for the mixture to be separated?)

    • Record as above in the form of a poster.

  • How is that relevant? Well, look at this picture of a plant/”factory” that separates sea-salt from sea/ocean water (it also obviously “produces” or harnesses water which is used in farming and could even be used as drinking water.

  • Also, have you watched and do you remember “Race across the world” where the two winners worked on a salt-lake high up in the Andes? There, they had to get blocks of salt from the ground and once the “pool” they had created was empty, water from the lake was left in again.

  • While today, we examined reversible changes (you can undo the mixing, essentially), next week you will be looking at irreversible changes.

      • Use these phrases when describing one of the following pictures in 5-10 sentences (use at least 10 of these words and phrases):

        • Challenge: You could even turn this into a narration where somebody just stranded on the island and talks his/her first walk.

      • Option: Find or draw your own island paradise or nightmare and describe it.

  • Art: Today, I would like to give you a little more freedom in your choice of Croydon art.

From or on your walk, please take a picture of what best symbolises Croydon (e.g. building). That might be a certain building, a park, a road … You choose.

After taking the pictures use it as a basis for your own perspective or observational drawing.

Revisit the perspective drawing video (2 weeks ago), if you need or wish to. Here is a different link with other objects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twcFW0RyOO8

Start drawing.

Have fun drawing!

Choice Board

A quick reminder of the choice board we introduced last week and how it works.

The choice board allows your child to choose the activities they would like to complete on any given day during the week. They do not have to do all the activities each day. They can spread the activities they do across the week. However, please note that the content of the Super Sentence and Curious Cat Challenge will change daily. Also, you may send in a video of your child reading to us at least once a week.

Have a look at the WhiteRose lessons-Week 3- https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/
I know that we are not completing the correct date but this is a good recap of work that we would be covering at this time of year anyway.
Day 1-Simplify fractions
Day 2- Compare and Order fractions
Day 3-Add and Subtract fractions
Day 4-Mixed addition and subtraction
Day 5- Friday Challenge
Here are the video links for each day too.
Don’t forget that there will be Mathletics tasks to do as well for the week!  Well done to all of you who are completing those when you can too.  They will continue to help build your fluency and reasoning skills as well.

Science –

Scientist cartoon Royalty Free Vector Image - VectorStock

Have a look at the Curious Creature presentation (where it says ‘discuss with a partner’, just have a think on your own or talk to an adult about it).
Then have a go at matching the animal picture with its classification description.
Once you have done that-it’s time to get creative.  Create your own creature-start by thinking about its classification and think what features it will need to have. Complete the Curious Creature sheet.  the more creative you can be, the better.  Have fun!

English writing

Day 1 – Write a diary entry as Wallace at the beginning of the sketch.

Day 2 – What are the key features of the ‘Snoozatron’? Why have they been specifically chosen?

Day 3 – Create an advert for the ‘Snoozatron’.

Day 4 – Write a diary entry as Gromit after the eventful night.

Day 5 – What key features could you add to the ‘Snoozatron’? Explain why they would be useful. (E.g. Hot chocolate and marshmallows, lavender spray, white noise…)

Challenge – Create your own cracking contraption for helping to get a good nights sleep. (This could be in the form of an explanation text or a detailed, labelled diagram).

Week Beginning 18th May

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#e7ed19″ border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]It is the last week of the Spring 1 half term already. It is lovely to see how well the children are working at home. We have seen some amazing learning.[/dropshadowbox]

This week our learning is as follows:

English

Spelling – learn the following spellings: interest, important, accident, believe, strange, reign.

Children who are in Violet group (Waterloo) or Toy Story group (Blackfriars) for English should work on: they, on, she, so, we, can.

All children should also revise the homophones there, their and they’re using the attached lesson from BBC bitesize daily.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zk2c92p

Information Texts – This week we will finish our research on Queen Boudicca and work towards creating an information leaflet. The children created information leaflets on volcanoes in February and these leaflets should be in a similar format.

  • Day 1 – Think of two questions which would help you find out more about Queen Boudicca. Use the internet to find the answer to your questions. When you have done that look at the questions you wrote at the end of last week. Can you find out any more information that helps you answer those questions fully? The following websites may be helpful;

https://www.ks2history.com/boudica-info-guide

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/blog/who-was-boudicca-facts-for-kids

https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/Boudicca/442493

  • Day 2- Today you will draft the text of your information leaflet. Use the questions you wrote yesterday and last week as your sub-headings. Write your answer below each questions as fully as you can in sentences. Use your spider diagrams from last week and your research from yesterday.  If you find spelling difficult remember to use your sounds. You can also ask an adult for some key spellings.
  • Day 3 -Today you are going to proofread, edit and up-level your work. Start by following the lesson from BBC bitesize daily on using your proofreading skills.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zryxt39

When you have completed the lesson carefully proofread the text you wrote yesterday. Edit and up-level your text. Remember if you aiming to be a greater depth writer you should be thinking carefully about the effect of your sentences.

  • Day 4 and 5 – You are now ready to create your information leaflet about Queen Boudicca. Start by reminding yourself of the features of non-fiction writing.

us2-e-016-all-about-text-features-powerpoint_ver_6

Now make your leaflet. You can make a simple leaflet or use one of the bookmaking examples in the attached document  (the second one might be best) You can now copy out the text you prepared over the last two days and include other features of a non-fiction text

such as pictures, captions, labels and maybe even a contents page.

Primary-Make-and-Do-Make-Your-Own-Books-KS2

We look forward to seeing your leaflets.

Reading- Children should continue to read non-fiction texts. These can be traditional books or e-books (see link below).

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page?view=image&query=&type=book&age_group=&level=&level_select=&book_type=Non-fiction&series=

Try asking your child one of the following questions;

  • What features of an information book can you see? (e.g heading, sub-heading, contents page, photograph, diagram, caption, label.)
  • Can you write three questions then answer them using the book?
  • How would you use the contents page to help you?
  • Why has the author set out the book in this way?
  • Is the layout of the page helpful to you in finding information? Why?

Maths

We are covering multiplication and division in maths this week. Please watch the videos and then complete the worksheets.

  • Day 2 –

Worksheet: The 4 and 8 times tables

Worksheet: Dividing a 2 digit number by a 1 digit numbers

  • Day 5 –

Worksheet: Scaling

We can see that many children are using mathletics regularly. This is an excellent way of practicing their number skills. We would like to remind you that we have a trial (until 23rd June) for the numbots and times tables rockstars websites and all children have been issued with a log-in and password. These sites do not seem to be being used regularly – please get in contact if your child is not able to access the sites.

Year Four Home Learning Week beginning 18th May

Hello Year Four! Hope you are all keeping safe and well as you enjoy the beautiful weather. It is amazing to see all the work you have been sharing with us, it is lovely to know that you are all still working so hard and enjoying your learning.

This week’s learning:

English: This week shows a return to the Ananse stories and some fun food poetry writing.

Day one- Read the story, thinking about Ananse’s character, answer some questions and predict the ending Monday 18th May

Day two- How does the ending of the story compare with your prediction? Also, some adverbials practise using sentences from the story Tuesday May 19th

If you need some adverbials revision, use the PowerPoint to help you Adverbials with audio

Day three- Thinking about Ananse’s character, you can plan and write your own Ananse story Wednesday 20th May

Day four- A switch to poetry today! Read the food poems, looking for patterns or repeated language. Which do you like or dislike? Why? Thursday 21st May

Day five- Remind yourself of what an ode is (a poem praising a person, thing or idea using emotive and descriptive language) and write your own food based ode Friday 22nd May

Reading: If you fancy a break from Reading Planet, have a go at this as something different;  Please Mrs Butler

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zr93bdm

Listen to and read the poems.

You are now going to show your understanding of the poem by summarising what has happened using hashtags.

For this activity, your hashtag should not be more than six words long.

For example:

# Who is Mrs Butler?

# Mean Derek Drew

# Copycat

# Lamb on the roof!

# Derek Drew strikes again

# Eating rubbers next!

Top tip!

You might find it easier if you read a few sentences and then stop to write your hashtag.

Activity 2

Read the poem Excuses by Allan Ahlberg.

While you read, think about the question below.

  • Is it the same child with lots of excuses or different children speaking?

Top tip!

Read the last line very carefully: ‘So… can we start again?’

(Thomas loved this activity, I’m sure you will enjoy it too)

Maths: We now have access to the Whiterose worksheets again. This week is a revision of fractions which some of you have already covered. If you find this is the case, have a look at the BBC Bitesize daily home learning tasks which are a little different.

The 2nd week of May – 11th May 2020

Well done to last week’s Class-Dojo stars:

Cannon: Lillian, Lucas, Magnus, Emiliana, Melvin, Mariah, Ame, Damara, Bianca, Richa, Leen, Oscar, William, Deen (Welcome to Dojo) and Pyman (Thank you Mrs Ancel for updating as well.) – I hope that I haven’t forgotten anyone.

London: Holly, Emily P (fabulous Science work), James, Sofia G and Niki.

Good morning,

Another happy Monday is knocking on our door and there seems to be a small light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s begin the week with sharing what we are proud of and what kindness you have witnesses over the last couple of weeks. Like last week, we will add the new day’s activities in front of the previous day so that we don’t have to spend so much time scrolling down to find the day we are looking for. Here is our timetable for the week which can give you a bit of structure to avoid every day feeling like it is the same as all the others.

Remember to send us your work via Dojo or email (howardyear5@gmail.com) to receive huge amounts of Dojo-Points and – from what the flies on the walls have been whispering – there might be other rewards for great contributions once we are all back in school.

Here are two extra activities for you to complete at any chosen time:

KS2 home learning – garden visitors – garden flowers identification sheet

KS2 home learning – garden visitors – lifecycle cards

KS2 home learning – garden visitors – Lined Writing Paper

KS2 home learning – garden visitors – my garden design sheet

KS2 home learning – garden visitors – wildlife journal

KS2 home learning – garden visitors – writing task

KS2 home learning – garden visitors – Y 5 6 reading questions

Science: Since many of you seemed to have enjoyed Science this week, here is a page with very fascinating Remote Lessons. If you are interested, have a look at the (the people from the STEM team ask for an adult to be present though).

History:

    1. Today’s work is a little slimmed down, since we haven’t had very many responses to the questionnaire task. If you have sent us questions last week, you can jump to task 2.

        • In order to get some first hand information about Croydon‘s past, I would like to send a questionaire to different people who will have knowledge of Croydon‘s long past. These are:

          • a person from Croydon Library,

          • a person from the Bourne-Association (a history association with huge knowledge),

          • our former headteacher Mr Robinson and

          • residents of St. John‘s nursing home who have lived in Croydon all their life.

Therefore, I need you to write a list of up to 10 questions you would want me to pass on.

These questions should focus on getting information about what life was like, important events and places in Croydon, … essentially anything that could bring History alife for us. This is one of the methods Historians do their research.

    1. Please search the internet and create a factfile on Croydon Airport which was once a hugely important airport in London.

        • Possible content could be: When was it opened? How long was it open? What was the primary use of the airport? Which records or mayor achievements did the airport become famous for? Which famous people were associated with Croydon airport? Why did it close? What were the concepts for the future when it initially closed?

        • Include pictures, a glossary and a “Did you know?” box

Science: Why not have a Science afternoon?

World Science Day Bunting (teacher made)

Use this document for recording. Su1-Wk4-L01-ScienceAfternoonRecording

  • Topic One: As part “Properties of Materials” we should be looking at electrical conductivity. Therefore, proceed as follows:

    1. Watch the following videos and create a learning poster explaining what electrical conductivity is.

    1. At the bottom of that poster, please create two different tables and complete them.

    2. Table 1: Materials that are electrical conductors or electrical isolators.

      • Group the following materials:

        • oil, plastic, steel, aluminium, wood, copper, glass, sea-water, silver, rubber, fabric,

Electrical conductor

Electrical insulator

    1. Table 2: Items I found in the household that are electrical conductors and electrical isolators.

      • Go through your household and find at least 10 different items, which I would like you to group into the 2 categories.

  • Topic Two: Watch the video which takes us toward next week’s subtopic “Reversible and irreversible change”

    • What do you think, has the temperature of a liquid an influence on how quickly sugar dissolves? → Investigate this matter.

      • Hypothesis: I think that …

      • Instruments: warm water (at different temperatures), stop-watch, thermometer, table spoon, sugar

      • Method:

        • Set up 4 different cups and fill them with warm water.

        • Cup one at 15°C, Cup two at 25°C, Cup three at 35°C and Cup four at 45°C (We don’t want you to burn your skin hence the lower temperature.)

        • Place a tea spoon full of sugar into each cup simultaneously (since we only have 2 arms, please use an assistant for the third and fourth cup).

        • Set the stop-watch and observe.

        • Read and record the time on the stop-watch for when the sugar has dissolved.

        • Repeat your experiment at least three times giving it a total of 4 rounds (calculate the average).

        • Draw your conclusion: Based on my data,

Reuben’s experiment: SugarExperiment

  • Topic Three: This takes us a little away from “Properties of Materials” and back to “Life-Cycles”, something that Mr Grundey’s children were learning in Science yesterday.

    • Task: Watch the videos and record how many different animals and plants can you find. You may have to do a little research about pond life and vegetation.

  • Art: Today, we will be travelling back into Tudor times Britain (1485-1603).

    • Britain was ruled by the Tudors for 118 years. Famous monarchs were Henry VII (1485 – 1509), Henry VIII (1509 – 1547), Edward VI (1547 – 1553), Jane Grey (1553 – 1553), Mary I (1553 – 1558) and Elisabeth I (1558 – 1603). Looking closer, one will realise how many historic building from that time in history still decorate the very unique face of Croydon. Amongst them stand …

      • Almshouses at the top of the High-Street (Hospital of the Holy Trinity; Whitgift Hospital) from 1599 and …

  • Old Palace (15th century).

    • Your task is to use your skills in perspective drawing to sketch these buildings on paper and keep them for your Sketch-book that currently resides in school. Have fun drawing!
