Show and Tell : Due to popular demand from the children we have introduced a show and tell session. The children have been very keen to share items they have made at home or new toys they have received. It provides an excellent opportunity for them to develop their confidence and self-esteem by speaking in front of an audience of their peers. This will also support the development of their speaking skills. To ensure every child has an opportunity to share something we have allocated each group to a day when they can bring in something to show and tell. Please note that you do not have to send something in every week. Group days are the same as the days when they change reading books (see below)
Books for home reading: Please ensure reading books and diaries are in book bags on these days:
Mondays- Red group
Tuesdays- Blue group
Wednesdays- Green group
Thursdays- Orange Group
Fridays – Yellow group [/dropshadowbox]

Southwark News Week Beginning 15th January 2018
In Southwark Class our learning next week will be as follows;
- In Maths we will be consolidating our learning of multiplying by ten and hundred and then moving on to dividing by 10 and 100. Current Maths guidance emphasises the importance of children recognising x10 as making the total ten times larger and x100 as making the total one hundred times larger. Please can you remind your child of this and the fact that whilst in most cases it does look like you just need to add or subtract 0 or 00 that this isn’t the case. This will help your child immensely as they begin multiplying and dividing decimals later this term. Please come and chat to me if you need any support explaining this to your child. We have been learning that when you calculate 6×100, each of the ones becomes 100 times bigger.
- In English we will be learning the pattern of story The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry off by heart with actions internalising the writer’s language. We will then be retelling the story with drama and writing a story map to track the structure of the story. If you would like to share this story at home with your child you can watch the full story on the link below.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw0arFtHeVw
- In Topic time we will learn about the valuable resources which come from Rain forests.
- In RE we will be continuing our learning about Sikhism during ppa time.
- In French we will be beginning to learn the days of the week in order to work towards being able to say the date in French. We will also continue to revise numbers to 50 and the link below can support your child learn these numbers.
- Thank you for your continued support with your child’s reading at home. A much improved 24 out of 28 children read often at home this week.
- Vishal, Olivia, Joshua and Fawwaz all received merit cards this week. Well done!
- Anomiga is yet again our reader of the week. Well done Anomiga!
Week commencing 15th January
Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:
English- We will be continuing our unit of work based around the story The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. We will be learning the story and using actions and drama to help us memorise the sequence.
Maths- We are continuing to work on Multiplication and Division. We have thought about multiplying by 10 and 100 and will be moving on to dividing by 10 and 100.
Could I please ask that you remind your children that we are not just adding/taking away a zero but are making the numbers bigger and smaller. If they understand this now and can see the connection to moving columns in place value, it will help them when we come to learn about decimals later in the term.
Alongside this we will be doing a weekly times table challenge and working towards membership of the 100 or 144 club and I would like all children to work hard on their tables to achieve this!
Reading- All children read with an adult at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme. After this adult led session they complete tasks relating to the text or linked to current English and Spelling focuses. We continue to read stories as a class.
ICT- We are still holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr
This week in ICT we will be putting together fact-files about the rainforest animals they are researching for homework over this weekend.
PE- PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and children will need their PE kits. I would also like to remind you that the school policy is that all earrings should be removed, hair should be tied back and tights should be removed when getting changed.
I would also ask that PE kits stay in school between Monday and Friday as occasionally we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in additional activities.
This half term we will be doing Gym sequences and a Boot camp of circuits to improve fitness, stamina and muscle tone and will continue to run the daily mile.
Topic- Our topic for this term is rainforests. We will be learning about their strata and make up, the animals and people who live there and the effects of deforestation and pollution.
PSHE- We will be starting a new scheme of work called Apple’s friends which will help children to understand their feelings and relationships with others. There will also be some simple tasks for the children to complete at home.
Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday.
In addition to tasks given out I expect the children to read every day and continue to practise the multiplication tables.
I will be collecting the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly.
Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading.
If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note.
Successes– Well done to Oliver, Harley and Raya who all received merit cards this week!

Writing
This week we will be working on the Chinese folktale ‘The Magic Paintbrush’. We will be working on understanding the story in depth by thinking about charters and their choices. We will be identifying key features of a warning story and planning an alternative story based on The Magic Paintbrush.
Here is a version of The Magic Paintbrush
Once upon a time, there was a young man called Ma Liang. He was poor and kind and liked drawing so much that he drew pictures everywhere. One night, he dreamed that an old man gave him a magic paintbrush and asked him to use it to help poor people. When he woke up, he found the magic paintbrush on his desk.
From that day on, he used the paintbrush whenever poor people needed help. When he saw that people had no water to use in the fields, he drew a river and the river came to life. People could bring water from the river to the field to help their crops grow. When he saw the hard working farmers struggling to feed their families, he drew more food for them to eat. Soon many people knew about the magic paintbrush and were very grateful to Ma Liang.
But in the village, there lived a rich man who was mean and decided to steal the paint brush from the young man so that he could use it to become even richer. So he sent his servants to Ma Liang’s home to steal the magic paintbrush.
Once he had the paintbrush, he felt very happy and he invited his friends to come to his home so that he could show them his new possession. He drew a lot of pictures, but none of them would come to life for him. He was very angry that the paintbrush would not work for him so he sent for Ma Liang.
He said to the young man “If you draw some pictures for me and bring them to life, I will set you free.” Ma Liang did not want to help such a bad man, but he had an idea. He said to the bad man, “What would you like me to draw?”
The rich man said, “I want a golden mountain. I will go there to gather gold.” But the young man drew a sea first. The rich man was angry and said,” Why did you draw a sea? I want a golden mountain. Draw it quickly!”
So the young man drew a golden mountain which was far away from the sea. The rich man said, “Draw a big ship quickly. I want to go there to gather gold.” The young man smiled quietly and drew a big ship. The rich man jumped into the ship and set off to find the gold but when the ship sailed to the middle of the sea, Ma Liang drew a large wave which destroyed the ship and the rich man was never seen in the village again.
After that, the young man lived with his family happily and used the magic paintbrush to help the poor people as the the old man had asked him to do and the magic paintbrush was known and loved by everyone.
Reading
We are really enjoying The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith and have already found lots of words and phrases that we love :).
Phonics/ SPaG
We are continuing to recap phase 5 alternative graphemes and spelling patterns including alternative spellings e.g. the /m/ sound spelt in words such as lamb or the /ch/ sound as in words like picture or witch.
We will also be looking at how to spell high frequency words and improving simple sentences by adding adjectives and connectives.
Maths
We are continuing to look at money.
This week will be consolidating making the same amounts with different notes and coins and also learning how to find totals and difference. This unit builds on the children’s addition and subtraction knowledge. We will be focusing on using bar models as a strategy.
The children will need a strong understanding of place value (even over 100) for calculating with £’s and pence. They will also need to practice counting in 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and 20’s for more efficient strategies.
PSHE
We have started the Zippy’s Friends project which will run for most of the year. After each of the six modules we will send home an activity for your child to complete. This will give you an insight to what it is all about. Please speak to your child about these sessions as they are all very excited about the project! So far we have discussed things that make us feel happy/ sad and what we can do to help us feel better. In this module we will also be looking at anger, jealousy and embarrassment. I was extremely impressed with the maturity shown by the whole class.
P.E.
We are going to be continuing Pilates on a Monday and doing circuit training on Thursdays.
Science
We are starting to look at differences between plants and animals and variation between animals.
History
A focus on Florence Nightingale and the changes she implemented in healthcare.
