LITERACY:
Book Focus: The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister
The children will read and discuss the key events of this delightful story about an amazingly beautiful fish that learns an important lesson about sharing.
Group Phonics: This term we will focus on reading words and sentences containing all the phonemes the children have learnt throughout the year and we will be teaching strategies for instant blending of words and strategies for reading longer multisyllabic words.
PSED- Personal, Social, Emotional Development: Over the next few weeks we will focus on developing the children’s confidence and sense of independence as we prepare for their transition into Year 1

Thank you to all of Year 6 who have supported the school this from being guides at the Year 2 ‘Come dine with me’ lunch to the cake Sale Friday afternoon. It is great that so many of you want to support the school and volunteer your time. It is a great asset.

In Maths, we will solve money problems.
In English, we will continue our work on persuasive writing and start writing advertisement posters.
In Science, we will learn about the human skeleton and its function.
The children worked very hard on their number stars and many are now working towards joining the 100 club which is securing the multiplication and division facts up to the 10 times table.
Please continue to encourage your child to use Mathletics, Spellodrome and Teach your monster to read as additional online learning resources.
Week Beginning 2nd July
In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;
- In mathematics we will learn about money. We will look at the value of notes and coins and convert from pounds to pence. We will add and subtract money and give change.
- In English we will complete our magazine adverts before planning the script for a TV advert.
- In science we will learn about the skeleton.
- In topic time we will work with Chase on staying healthy.
Well done to Zoe, Mya, Leen, Bianca and Emiliana who performed in our strings concert on Friday.

Thank you so much for helping us have the wonderful visitor Mrs Jenkins from the Croydon Museum who brought with her treasure boxes filled with old toys and artefacts. Your children had an amazing time handling the wonderful selection of old toys and household objects. Please ask them to share their experiences with you.

Our learning this week…
English
On Monday, we will write, edit and publish our poems based on ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright. From Tuesday we will be looking at our new text ‘ Lima’s Red Hot Chilli’ by David Mills. Children will be sequencing the story as well as be involved in role-play.
Maths
This week we will be partitioning numbers into tens and ones using Base 10 – Place Value- counting forwards and backwards from any given number, ordering numbers, one more, one less, writing numerals in words .
We will also be revisiting 2D & 3D shapes. Children will name, identify and describe the shapes.
History
Children will continue to develop their understanding of the past. Let them talk to you or grandparents or older family members of how life was when they were young and begin to think about what life is for them especially relating to toys and games they play. ( For e.g doll house / marbles in the olden days and computer games in the modern times).
ICT
We are learning to create and debug programs. Please support your child to develop their skills by using ‘Lightbot’.

Art
Children will continue to learn about the British nature artist Andy Goldsworthy and create their own nature sculptures. Please bring twigs , leaves, flowers, pebbles by Wednesday. Thanks.
P.E
Children will continue developing their skills to skip and using a skipping rope with increasing control. This week, the children will learn to develop their team spirit and positive attitude towards winning gracefully as well as accepting defeat as a way to improve their skills.
PSHE
Our topic is called ‘Relationships’. Children will be talking about feelings – how to deal with it.
Music
We will continue to sing using our voices creatively and learn about rhythm and tempo.
R.E.
We will be continuing our learning about different religions focusing on basic principles of Hinduism.
Homework
Homework is sent home every Friday and should be promptly returned on Wednesday please. Homework is also set weekly related to the concepts children are learning. Please continue to do your Mathletics. Looking forward to more Gold Award winners this term.

We have come to the end of our work on statistics. From this point on we will be recapping various aspects of the Year 2 curriculum; we will be looking at number and place value first.

Zippy’s Friends- we have two more sessions left of our final unit ‘we cope’.
P.E
Due to Year 5 needing the ICT suite on Tuesday, we have moved our PE slots this week. We will be playing tennis (building up to playing doubles) and doing some real PE. Real PE is an initiative that focuses on cognitive, creative, social and personal skills as well as technical skills. L

The children enjoyed role playing aspects of the story and wrote letters to the lazy farmer from the perspective of the disgruntled duck. This week the children will create their own version of the story .

Your children will have taken a letter home on Thursday 22nd February, detailing which swimming group that they are in. Below is a reminder of the key dates and swimming kit that they will need.
Group A Tuesday 27th February-Tuesday 27th March
Group B Tuesday 17th April-Tuesday 22nd May (No swimming on the 15th May)
Group C Tuesday 5th June – Tuesday 3rd July
Please can you make sure that they bring a swimming costume (preferably NOT a bikini for girls and NOT long shorts for boys), towel and, if they have long hair, a swimming hat all in a bag that can be easily identifiable. Children will be taught how to swim by 2 qualified swimming instructors including a teacher from Whitgift school and no prior knowledge of how to swim is needed. Children will be assessed the first week and then put into suitable groups with no child entering the deep end unless they can swim a length unaided. A trained lifeguard will also be present.
Children who are not going swimming during this time will still have a PE lesson. All children will continue to have their Thursday PE lesson.
Music:
We shall be continuing our Soundstart lessons with Mr Regan. Keep an eye out for our end of year performance.
RE:
Mrs Grundey and Mrs Swift will be taking our RE sessions on Tuesday afternoons. This term we shall be looking at Judaism.
French:
Mrs Grundey and Mrs Swift will also be taking our French sessions this term. This term we shall be looking at clothes!
