Thank you for coming to our introductory meeting last week. It was wonderful to see so many of you there.

Please don’t forget to come to our Phonics workshop for parents on Wednesday 3rd October. You can choose to attend either of the two sessions: 9.00-10.30 or 2.00-3.30. This workshop will focus on how your child will learn to read and form letters and how you can support your child with reading at home.

Please help your child settle into their school routine by being prompt in the morning and at collection time. Please be reminded that school starts at 8.50am and finishes at 3.30pm.

Also, we would appreciate if you could please ensure that your child brings a named bottle of water (plain water only) into school every day.

AUTUMN TERM TOPIC: All about me

LITERACY:

Book Focus: Harry and the Dinosaurs go to school by Ian Whybrow

The children will enjoy a shared reading of this wonderfully illustrated book about the first day of school for a little boy called Harry. They will have opportunities to talk about their own feelings and experiences of their first days at school, making connections between the main character (Harry) and themselves.

DOUGH DISCO

In addition to a range of stimulating activities and challenges, this week the children will begin their first daily dough disco sessions. These are short, fun sessions aimed at developing your child’s motor skills in readiness for writing. [/dropshadowbox]

Week commencing 1st October

Please find an update about what we will be learning in Millennium next week;

English- We will be continuing to read Robin Hood by Marcia Williams. Our focus for this week is retelling a section of the story with actions and boxing up the key events in preparation for writing our own version.

Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.

Maths- We are revising place value. We will be counting in 25’s and beginning to count through zero to include negative numbers.

In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.

Topic- Our topic for the Autumn term is Vikings and Anglo- Saxons. We will be learning about the cultures of both the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons. This week we will be learning about Athelston, the first king of England and how kings of the time dealt with the Viking invaders..

Science- Our focus this term is teeth and digestion. We will be looking at the parts of the body responsible for digestion and learning about their function.

Mrs Forde will be providing PPA cover on a Thursday morning, teaching RE and Spelling.

Homework- Homework will be set on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday each week. The children will be expected to read every day and practise their multiplication tables in addition to other work that is given. This week I have asked the children to log on to Mathletics and complete the  assigned tasks and to complete a sheet practising rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000 which we have been learning in class this week. They are then free to explore the rest of Mathletics if they wish and can follow the link to Spellodrome.

Successes- Well done to the following children who have received merit cards this week; Kelsey, Ryan, Lucy and Emily.

Other news-

Look out for the Parents Evening letter which should get to you next week. Slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis on Wednesday 10th and Wedenesday 17th of October.

We will be having a Viking dress up day on 9th October along with an exciting Viking visitor joining us for the day.

Week Beginning 1st October 2018

  • In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;
  • In mathematics we will learn to add three digit numbers in columns.
  • In English we will write our own versions of the story of Stone Age Boy.
  • In Science we will investigate the strength of different magnets.
  • In history we will continue our work on the Stone Age.
  • In RE we will learn about Hindu holy books.

On Friday there will be a special assembly from a visitor from the Hindu faith. The children will learn about the story of Rama and Sita in preparation for Diwali.

We are looking forward to our Stone Age dress up day on Friday 12 October and our visit to Get Fired on Monday 15th October.

Week 1st October, 2018

Reading Books:-All children would have brought a reading book appropriate to their reading ability. Please read with your child and write a comment or sign or draw a smiley. Books will only be changed if this is done by the parent/carer. We value your support as it is   essential to enable your child to practise their skills and make progress.

Books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Home work
Your child would have brought home a homework book with two sets of work. A poster about ‘Croydon’- Geography topic, spellings to learn (related to their phonic phase) and words to read and decode (these are non words or alien words to support children’s phonic  skills).
Mathletics homework has also been set according to our Maths learning in class. The log in cards are at the back of your child’s reading records.  Certificates will be handed out weekly in our Year Group Assembly.
Homework need to be returned on Wednesday 3rd September.

Our learning this week…

English

Children will continue to write and edit ‘The Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ story.We will be introducing a new text ‘Lila and the secret rain’. They will be looking at the front cover and predict about the story.

Maths

We will be counting in 2’s forwards and backwards. Children will introduce additions with part part-whole model. We will also recap adding two groups of objects together. By Friday we will start wring number sentences.

We will continue our fun P.E. session and develop balance skills  as well as listening skills and travelling in different ways and develop spatial awareness.

We continue our learning using line and tone and develop our skills to draw a self – portrait.

Year 2 parent workshop

Thank you to those of you who attended the workshop yesterday. It was great to see so many of you there. We have put a link to the powerpoint presentation here as we understand that some of the slides may be difficult to read.

Week beginning 24th September 2018

This week:

  • In Maths we are starting a new unit on addition and subtraction. We will begin looking at a range of representations to add and subtract 1s, 10s, and 100s from 3 digit numbers.
  • In English we will finish re-writing the Stone Age Boy in our own words. We will then go on to begin creating our own characters to write our own version of the Stone Age Boy.
  • In Science we are looking at magnetism and investigating whether different materials are magnetic or not.
  • In R.E we will learn how Hindus worship at the Mandir.
  • P.E – our P.E lessons are currently on Tuesday and Friday afternoon please ensure your child has their P.E kits.

Week Beginning 24th September 2018

Writing

We will be continuing to focus on our first key text: Leon and the Place Between. It has strong links to our work on the circus.

This week we will be looking at the structure of the story and thinking about ways we can innovate the middle part of the story.

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)

We are consolidating using conjunctions to join clauses this week.

We will also be looking at synonyms and using dictionaries to understand the definitions of new vocabulary.

Reading

We are continuing our class read Fantastic Mr Fox. The class are really enjoying it so far!

Maths

We are finishing our unit on place value and number. This week we are focusing on ordering two digit numbers and counting in 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s. Children should also be able to count in 10’s from any given number e.g. 3,13,23,33. This will help with calculating in our next unit.

Children should be secure in recognising the patterns and be able to reason about counting. For example;

  • counting in 2’s- numbers should all be even
  • counting in 5’s- numbers should have a 0 or a 5 on the ones position
  • counting in 10’s from 10- numbers are even and have a 0 in the ones position
  • counting in 10’s from any given number- the tens change but the ones remain the same

History

We are going to learn about Amy Johnson, a local historical figure. This week we will be writing fact files about her

Science

We will be looking at materials and their properties this half term.

PSHE

This week we will be looking at what makes a good friend.

P.E

Monday afternoon. The other slot is to be confirmed.

There is a Year 2 parent’s workshop on Tuesday 25th September in the Dining Hall starting at 9 am. It would be beneficial for all parents to attend as we will be discussing the expectations for Year 2 and there will be practical examples of work 🙂

They will also be developing and extending their mathematical vocabulary – more than /less than, bigger than / smaller than / in between. They will use ten frames and number lines to support their learning.
