Week beginning 12th November

In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will multiply and divide using our four times table. We will use our skills to solve problems.
  • In English we will plan and write reviews of the film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, following our visit to the cinema.
  • In science we will learn about reflection.
  • In topic time we will compare three different Bronze Age civilisations.

We will continue to learn gymnastics in indoor PE each Friday. We will also learn ball skills in outdoor PE on Tuesdays (weather permitting).  Please make sure that children have PE kit, including footwear, in school.

Week commencing 12th November

Please find an update about what we will be learning in Millennium this week;

English- We will be continuing our unit of work surrounding instruction and explanation texts. We will explore these using art and will even learn how to draw Horrid Henry! This gives us a chance to practise imperative verbs and prepositional phrases in our writing. This week we will be continuing our explanations about how to draw Horrid Henry and editing our final drafts. Check out the video below if you would like to have a go yourself.

Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.

Maths- We are about to start working on multiplication and division. Our first week will be spent multiplying by 10 and 100.

In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.

Topic- This week we are taking a break from our Viking topic to think about Remembrance Day. We are thinking especially about how the war affected those who were left behind, including working women and children.

Science- Our focus this term is teeth and digestion. We will be designing our own scientific enquiry about tooth decay.

Mrs Forde will be providing PPA cover on a Thursday morning, teaching RE, covering a topic on discrimination and Spelling.

Homework- Homework will be set on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday each week. The children will be expected to read every day and practise their multiplication tables in addition to other work that is given.There will also be weekly tasks set on Mathletics and Spellodrome. This week I have asked the children to look at beatbox tables and practise the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

Other news- We have our cinema trip on Wednesday 14th November. It is in school time and we will back at school for lunch. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the cinema trip on Friday 16th November has been cancelled.

 

Thank you to Zoe Henry who came to teach us some dancing today. We had a wonderful time and I am sure lots of children will be hoping to start dance classes soon!

This week:

Hope everyone had a good half term.

This week:

  • In maths this week we will learn about angles. We will learn about right angles as a property of turn and shape and will compare angles that are bigger than and smaller than right angles
  • In English we will begin our work on film and film reviews. We will start by looking at a short film “For the Birds.”  We will ask and answer questions about the film and retell the story of the film adding narrative.
  • In Science we will begin our new topic of Light and Dark.
  • This half term we will continue with topic work on early history focusing on the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

Week Beginning 5th November 2018

Writing

This week we are starting a new topic on Autumn poetry.

We will be thinking about what we like about our chosen poem and the features and language patterns.

We will be going on an autumn walk before focusing on learning lots of new vocabulary. We will be using spider diagrams to enhance our vocabulary base.

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)

There will also be a strong focus on using thesauruses to up-level newly learnt vocabulary.

Reading

We will be starting a new class read: The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl.

We will also be using pictures to work on key reading skills using the ERIC scheme.

Maths

This week we focusing on learning strategies for addition and subtraction of 2 two-digit numbers.

We will be using number lines and place value charts to calculate.

 

Geography

This week we are continuing to compare Croydon to Darwin in Australia.

Science

We will be looking at materials and their properties this half term.

History

We will be looking at the achievements of Lewis Hamilton and his impact on us for Black History Month.

PSHE

This week we will be looking at what makes a good friend.

Writing

This week we will be moving onto our poetry unit based on autumn. For our hook we will be visiting Duppas Hill Park and gathering things to help inspire our poems!

 

We will have a significant focus on vocabulary within this unit. This will include lots of work using thesauruses to enable us to make ambitious word choices.

Reading

We are going to be starting our new class read: The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl.

 

Maths

We will be working on addition and subtraction for one more week before moving onto money. Your child should have taken a copy of our maths mastery workshop home with them last week. If you have any questions, then please come and find me!

This week we will be adding two 2-digit numbers (crossing tens). For example: 26+37.

We will also be subtracting 2-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers both crossing and not crossing tens.

Lastly, we will also be looking at our number bonds to 100 as well as adding three one digit numbers (e.g 4+6+7=17).

 

Geography

We are continuing to compare Croydon to Darwin, Australia.

 

Science

We will be looking at materials and their properties this half term. We have conducted an experiment into which material would be best to make a circus tent with and will be writing our findings up this week.

Welcome back after half term!

Maths:
This week, we shall be looking at prime numbers and factors, as well as multiples.

English:

This week, we shall be starting our new unit, film reviews. In line with our upcoming trips to the cinema as part of the Into Film Festival, we shall be identifying the key features and evaluating what makes a good film review.

SPAG:

We shall be looking at adding brackets for parenthesis. Furthermore, we shall be branching out with our vocabulary and looking at the Y5/6 statutory spelling list.

Reading:

We have started our new class book, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Children are more than welcome to purchase a copy to read along in class.

In Year 5, children are responsible for changing their own books independently. We do ask that children read at home everyday and mark this by a simple comment in their homework diary. Please do encourage your child to read aloud, even though they are in Year 5, to build the stamina with their fluency.

Name of Book: Gangsta Granny

Peter read from page 12-16. He struggled on the words ‘inspiration’ and ‘necessary’.

PE:

Our PE lessons will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit on these days.

Music:

Soundstart lessons, with Mr Regan, shall start this week. This is where Year 5 pupils will have the chance to learn both the guitar and keyboard.

RE:

Mrs Forde will start to teach the children all about Christianity on Wednesday afternoons.

PSHE:

We shall be writing a letter to Bradley, from Carla – two characters based in our class novel from last half term.

Computing:

We shall be looking at word processing skills and how to use features to write a newspaper report.

French:

We shall be looking at the unit of pets this week, As-tu un animal?

History:

We shall be introducing our history topic this half term, Ancient Greece.

LITERACY

Book Focus: Whatever Next by Jill Murphy

The children will enjoy this wonderful story about a little bear’s adventure to the moon, developing their understanding of the story through role play activities. We will read and discuss the key events using sequencing vocabulary such as ‘First, Then, Next, Last’ or ‘At the end’.

Phonics: /i/, /n/, /m/ /d/ and /g/

Please keep each sound sheet at home and continue to practise saying and writing these sounds every day. As your child continues to learn more letter sounds they may forget the earlier sounds taught so it is important to practise daily recognition and writing (using each of the sound cues eg /a/ – round the apple , down the leaf)

MATHS: In continuation from last week

• To explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

• To recognise, create and describe patterns

• To use mathematical names for ‘flat’ 2D shapes, and mathematical terms to describe shapes

• To select a particular named shape

Knowledge and Understanding of the World: The children will begin to learn about aspects of space exploration as they become more familiar with the focus book Whatever Next . Later this week we will also discuss the significance of Remembrance Day .

Please read with your child and write a comment in the yellow reading diary. Please keep both reading books and yellow diary in your child’s book bag after each reading.
