Our new topic for this term is called ‘Puppet on a string’.
English
We will be focusing on -Recount writing about half term holidays. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we will be planning, writing and editing our recount writing. Then on Friday, we will be focusing on Poetry – recap and discussion about the key features of a poem. We will be reading and learning to recite some poems- ‘Down at the station’, ‘The Sound Collector’……
Maths
We will revisit and continue Subtractions and children will be using a range of resources – Ten frame, Part-Part Whole, Base 10 to develop a deeper understanding of tens and units,
Science
Children will observe seasonal changes ‘Summer’ and describe weather patterns and understand how day length varies.
Geography
Children will name, locate and identify characteristics of the 4 countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding season Maps-Atlas work.
P.E
We will be looking at REAL PE and skipping.
PSHE
SEAL- Relationships and feelings.

Week Beginning 4th June 2019
We hope that all families had a great half term holiday. We return to school on Tuesday. This week our learning will be as follows.
- In mathematics we will work on shape. We will learn to find the perimeter of 2D shapes and to find angles.
- In English we will explore a new book, Dream Big by Deloris Jordan which is based on the life of her son, the basketball player Michael Jordan.
- In Science we will start a new unit of work on the body. We will begin by looking at how to keep the body healthy.
- Our topic work this term will be about keeping healthy. This week our topic work will link to staying healthy.
- In RE we will look at the importance of Pentecost to Christians.

Year Four Blog Wk Beginning 4th June 2019
Welcome back after half term. We are looking forward to our last half term with you all in year four.
Our learning this week:
Maths-We will be revising quadrilaterals, angles and types of triangles
Literacy-We will continuing our text-Wolves of Willoughby Chase see link below. We will be focusing on story openers.
Topic-We will be focusing on Egyptian beliefs and the amazing gods and goddesses.
Art-We will be continuing our cubism project focusing on analytical still life pictures influenced by George Braque, Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris.

Maths – This week in maths, we shall be learning the following:
perimeter of shapes, calculating missing lengths and the area of irregular/compound shapes.
English – We shall be finishing off our biography unit by choosing an ‘inspirational woman’ to focus on. In our SPAG sessions we shall be looking at uplevelling our writing. As with our previous learning through this unit, Cannon Street Class will be taught by Miss Blackford and London Bridge Class will be taught by Mr Grundey.
Computing – We shall be finishing up typing and designing our travel brochures.
PE -There is swimming this week.
RE –We shall starting our new unit with Mrs Forde, Judaism.
French – We shall be continuing to look at the unit of clothes!
Science – Continuing with forces, we shall be looking at air resistance.
Music – Soundstart lessons will return this week.
Reading – We have started our new class text, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll this week.

We will continue learning about Katie – a cheeky adventurous character who jumps into paintings by reading the Katie series of books by James Mayhew especially Katie’s Picture Show.
Children will plan, write and edit their creative stories set in a tropical jungle.
Maths
Children will also continue their learning about measures especially measuring length using metres and centimetres.
Children will recap on how to subtract numbers using a range of resources and pictorially represent their working. Children will apply their learning to solve problems.
Science
They will also continue learning about the names of common flowers and plants including deciduous and evergreen trees. Children will also learn about the plants we eat.
Geography
Children will name, locate and identify characteristics of the 4 countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas on Maps-Atlas work.
P.E
We will be exploring movement actions with control. We will also continue gymnastics- Children will be learning to travel, balance and sequence movements.
PSHE
SEAL- Good to be me. Children will be thinking about feelings especially ‘worry’. We will read the ‘The Huge Bag of Worries’. Children can discuss their responses as well as learn about different coping methods.
Art
Children will continue learning about primary and secondary colours. They will create their own tropical jungles using collage.
R.E
We will be looking at Hinduism – Authority and worship.
Home work :– Children will create posters about plants and trees in the local environment.

The children are really enjoying our Caring for Animals topic this term. The children have enjoyed all the creatures that we’ve had in our classrooms, especially the beautiful pet tarantula that was brought in by Harvey from Chelsea. Many thanks to Harvey’s parents for bringing in their pet. The tadpoles are still with us and the children are learning about its different stages of development. Next week we hope to have another exciting creature visiting so please ask your children to share with you what they are learning about.
As this is the last week of the Summer 1 term, please remember to take your child’s PE kit home at the end of the week.

We continue our learning about minibeasts this week with this delightful story about a very grouchy ladybird
Phonics: Group Phonics will focus on reviewing previous sounds and speedy blending of cvc and multisyllabic words
PSED: This week the children will talk about the things that make them grouchy, bad-tempered or angry like the ladybird in this week’s story. They will learn new words to describe different emotions
MATHS: This week the children will learn the concept of sharing in maths – how to share a quantity of objects into two equal groups to find half of a quantity. We will also review counting objects in groups of 2, 5 and 10. [/dropshadowbox]

Year 4 News, week beginning 20th May
Thank you once again for your generous donations of cakes and biscuits for our Wear It Wild event organised by Lucy, Ryan, Emiliana and Leen. The whole day was incredibly successful and year four made an amazing £501.51 in total!
Our learning this week:
English: We will be continuing our new class text-The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and focusing on writers’ techniques for story opening and using apostrophes for plural possession. See links below if you’d like to read along with us.

This week our learning will be as follows;
- In mathematics we will take part in a carousel of activities connected with capacity and mass. We will also revise our work on place value.
- In English we will complete our diary writing based on Boudica’s Army by Hilary McKay. We will also write a recount of our visit to the Museum of London.
- In topic time we will take part in our Roman Banquet.
- In art we will design and make Roman shields.

The work is not finished yet! We still have writing assessments to complete and another 8 weeks in school before the end of the year.
What will we be learning?
English-We will be writing scary settings and trying to create tension
Maths-We will be learning how to complete maths investigations
Reading-We will be continuing to read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Science-We will be revising parts of a plant, pollination and fertilisation

Writing
Due to the SATs, we will not be continuing with our police report work until after the half term. We will be doing short bursts of focused writing instead.
Maths
HURRAY! We have completed the Year 2 curriculum and will now be using our maths lessons to recap and revise our previous learning. Before the SATs we are hoping to recap time.
Art
We have been looking at hot and cold colours and will be exploring the artist Khandinsky this half term.
Geography
We will be using atlases to look at the countries, capital cities and seas in the United Kingdom.
Science
Our new topic is all about animals and habitats. We will be looking at things that are living, non-living and have never lived. Over the half term we will also be exploring a range of habitats including: the rainforest, desert and ocean We will be looking at how humans keep healthy as part of this unit.
PE
We are going to be making the most of the good weather this term. We will be doing ball skills with tennis/ basketball and skipping.

SATs
There is no reason that your children should be too stressed about these tests. They are there to inform our teacher judgements only. We have seen your children grow since September and are very aware of their capabilities. We are so incredibly proud of how hard they have all worked so far this year.

Homework- The Fisherman and his Wife
We have sent home a copy of the story we will be looking at from the second week back. Although long, it is very repetitive. We would like you to read the story with/ to your child and encourage them to highlight the words they are unfamiliar with. There will definitely be a few! Don’t be alarmed though as we will cover it in our class teaching.
