Tomorrow afternoon, we will have a visitor …
Maths: We are going to continue with multiplication and division (4×1 with and without exchange, visualisation of exchange, 2×2 with visualisation and exchange).
English: In this busy week ahead, we will …
- expand our skills when describing characters and settings,
- improve a film review and
- then plan and write our own film review on “Dora the explorer – And the lost city of Gold”.
Art: We will finally start making our Cardboard Relief.
Science: We will finish Space.
Spanish: Exchange further personal information.
PSHE: Hopefully, our visitors will arrive and work with us on how to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

Book Focus: Aliens love underpants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort
The children will love this charming and funny story about alien creatures from another planet who are fascinated by human underpants! This delightful story will stimulate their imagination and create a stimulus for our learning this week.

MATHS
To develop understanding of 4 and 5.

English – Writing

The children will be using similes to describe features of Autumn. Example – the rain fell like diamonds form the darkening sky.
On Tuesday the children will write their cinquain poem about Autumn.
On Thursday and Friday, the children will gather ideas for their recount and they will study the features of a recount.
The children will be writing recounts about their cinema visit, the author visit and their Autumn walk.
We will start a new book called The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl. We will also be learning some new reading skills as a whole class using ERIC. The children will build their repertoire of different reading skills through the year. |

Maths We have moved on to money.

- To count money in pounds
- To count money with notes and coins
- to select the correct money
- to make the same amount using different notes and coins
- To count money in pounds
- Children will use their knowledge of counting in pence to help them. They will recognise it is not the amount of coins you have but the value of the coins. Children will be encouraged to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.
- To count money with notes and coins
We will teach the children to count notes and coins together and we use the expression ten pound and 23 pence. We do not introduce children to decimals yet. - To select the correct money.
Children will be given numerous items to buy and they need to select the right amount of money to buy the items. - To make the same amount using different notes and coins
Children will develop their understanding of different ways to make the same amount. The children will begin to see that 10p can be made using 2p, 2p, 2p, 2p and 2p or it can be made using 5p and 5p.
Florence Nightingale will be introduced to the children. The children we be shown several pictures of Florence Nightingale and then they will answer questions to help them get an understanding of her life.
The children will answer questions such as who do you think this woman is. Does her uniform tell you about her job? Why is she special? etc

Our Learning this week…
English
Poetry-Children will write and edit their own Autumn poems. Then we will begin a new familiar story called ‘The Lonely Beast’. We will be reading, discussing and asking questions about the main character.
Maths
Children will continue their learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
Science
Children will begin to learn about the different types of materials – metal, plastic, fabric, glass, wood, paper etc…They will sort materials into groups on the basis of their properties and begin to distinguish between an object and material from which it is made.
Children will also continue their learning about seasons focusing on Autumn.
We will also investigate – Are taller people older?
Art
Children will develop their skills using different media to create firework pictures. Autumn Art on Friday afternoon at 2.45pm.
P.E
Children will continue developing different ways of travelling as well as develop their core strength and balance.
ICT
During ICT sessions, we will be learning to use technology purposefully to create, organise store and retrieve digital content-log on, type name and surname, change font, size, colour and type a sentence using capital letter, space and full stop. Children will watch Hector’s world.
History
We will be celebrating ‘Black History Month’. Our class will be talking and writing about ‘Barack Obama’. Who is he? Why he is special? What did he do? Where did he live?

Week Beginning 15th November 2019
This week our learning will be as follows;

Whitgift Primary Project – Day 1

Today, we had a lovely time getting to know Whitgift School. In Computing, we learnt how to take pictures – using a camera – and manipulate them using Corel Photoshop. We had fun using different effects and creating our own animated GIFs.
Next, we were introduced to the language of Italian. Our teacher, Mr Jackson, taught us the names of different colours and pets. We realised there were a lot of similarities with the etymology of words we have previously learnt in our French and Spanish lessons.
Finally, we were treated to a treasure hunt in the Water Garden. This proved to be a fantastic opportunity to see a range of different birds – including flamingos – and even the odd wallaby popped out to say hello!

YEAR 6 ENRICHMENT WEEK
This week we will be experiencing a range of activities that will help develop the children’s wider understanding of the world and beyond. Below is a list of the different activities that will be taking place.
Monday-Today we will meet Floella Benjamin and watch the film ‘Coming to England’. She wrote the book and produced the film about her life in Trinidad and her experience living in England.
Tuesday-We will be walking to the cinema in Croydon and watching the film ‘Aladdin’
Wednesday-We will be catching the tram to Vue cinema on Purley Way and watching the film ‘Stan and Olly’
Thursday-We have been given a last minute opportunity to go to Pizza Express and make pizzas.
Friday-We will be continuing our project that we started last Friday with the London Ambassadors ‘WE’ charity. We will be looking at ways we can raise money for the homeless in Croydon through a range of different events.

We continue our learning about poetry. Children will identify the different features of a poem – verses/ stanzas, rhymes, repititive words / phrases, onomatopoeic words, alliteration. They will read a range of poems about Autumn, identify key vocabulary, generate their own word bank, write and edit their own firework poems.

Children will continue their learning about subtraction. They will use the key vocabulary – subtract, take away, minus, fewer, less and understand how to subtract using different resources – ten frame, part/part whole, number lines etc… They will begin to reason and explain their thinking as well as solve simple problems. We will begin our new half term with recount writing-discussion about our half-term holiday, make a plan and then write and edit our recount writing. We will recap ‘Our Year I-Jumbo Targets’- capital letters, one finger space between words, a full stop at the end of a sentence, keywords spelt correctly. By the end of this week, we will be introducing ‘Poetry’- reading and performing ‘Autumn’ and ‘Fireworks’ poems.
Maths
We will be continuing our learning about subtraction. Children will use ten frames, part-part-whole, counters, cubes, numicons to develop their understanding of key concepts. Then we will be looking at 2D shapes.

Dear Parents, carers
Thank you for attending our parent evenings. If you missed your scheduled appointment please try and arrange another appointment as soon as you can.
Please note that school starts at 8.50 everyday and the children now engage in early morning work as soon as they arrive at school in the morning. If they arrive late, they miss out on vital opprotunities to practise their learning, so please do your best to ensure they are in class by 8.50am everyday.

AUTUMN 2 TOPIC: Light and DarkThis week’s learning
LITERACY
Book Focus: Whatever Next by Jill Murphy as well as a selection of non-fiction books about Space
The children will explore non-fiction books about Space, learning about the key features of a non-fiction book such as the title, heading, contents page, index page.
Phonics: /o/, /c/, /k/ /e/ /u/
Please keep sound sheet at home and continue to practise saying and writing these sounds every day. As your child continues to learn more letter sounds they may forget the earlier sounds taught so it is important to practise daily recognition and writing (using each of the sound cues eg /a/ – round the apple , down the leaf)
MATHS: To develop understanding of 1-3. The children will be introduced to Number blocks, a popular programme available on the BBC Cbeebies. Learning in Maths will be based around the characters representing the numbers in this popular educational series.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World: The children will learn about the different planets in our solar system.
Communication and Language: To listen and respond to ideas expressed by others in conversation or discussion.
HOMEWORK Remembrance Day
Who would you like to thank on Remembrance Day? Find or draw a picture about some of the different people who help us in our communities. Ask your adult to help you write a sentence about how they help us (eg. police/firefighters/nurses/doctors/paramedics, etc)
READING BOOKS
Please read with your child and write a comment in the yellow reading diary. Please keep both reading books and yellow diary in your child’s bookbag after each reading.
