Maths
We are still working on time.

Zippy’s Friends- our current unit is titled ‘Saying Goodbye’. There will be a letter going out shortly regarding a proposed trip.

MATHS: This week the children will be learning to use quantities and objects to add and subtract two single-digit numbers and to count on or back to find the answer

Week Beginning 14th May 2018
In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;
- In mathematics we will add and subtract hundreds to three digit numbers and to add and subtract any three digit number using written methods.
- In English we will plan our own versions of the Romulus and Remus myth.
- In science we will learn how water is transported in plants.
- In topic time we will write recounts of our visit to the Museum of London.
We are looking forward to our Museum of London visit on Monday. Children need a packed lunch and plenty to drink. They should wear comfortable shoes and a waterproof jacket.We will return to school at 4pm.
On Friday we will be playing games and doing craft activities to celebrate the Royal Wedding. Children may wear red, white and blue. They do not need to bring anything.

Our Learning this week
In English, we will continue developing our narrative writing with our text The Firemaker’s Daughter by Phillip Pullman. Next week we will be planning and writing our own sections of the story in the suspense style.
In Maths, we are continuing our work on decimals applying our learning to estimating, comparing and calculating with numbers to two decimal points in the context of money and measuring.
Southwark class have been given a topic homework this week, Please choose an activity from our termly topic homework to complete and hand in by Friday 18th May.
In P.E sessions, we will be continuing athletics and a dance/aerobics unit. P.E will continue to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please ensure your child has their kit for every lesson. In addition to this we will continue to run the Daily Mile to help promote the fitness of our children.
As I’m sure you all know, reading daily is essential in helping your child progress with reading and writing. Please enjoy reading a range of fun books as well as your child’s school reading books to promote a love for reading. Please remember to write a comment or sign your child’s reading record regularly. Remember that your child can keep a book for as long as they need in order to finish it. We appreciate your support to enable your child to be a fluent and competent reader.
Well done to all children who were awarded a merit card this week, Tyler, Adrian B, Tyray and Emmanuel who were awarded the rare privilege cards for their outstanding commitment to following our school ethos-the 5 cs-Commitment,Care, Courtesy,Consideration and Cooperation.
Well done to our many readers of the week this week Daniel and Abi. a special mentions needs also to go to -Vishal. Azain, ,Anomiga, Limar, Jaida, Roshan, Adrian B and Olivia. These children read on a daily basis at home and are making excellent progress with their reading as well as their writing as a result.
Don’t forget that we will be celebrating the royal wedding next Friday by having a non uniform day where all children can wear red, white and blue.

Our topic for this term is called ”Temples, Tombs and Treasures’ linked to our HISTORY curriculum about Ancient Egypt.
Your child has taken home a homework sheet to cover the homework for the whole half term. Please choose another activity to complete for homework this week. We have had some fantastic work so far! In English, we will continue developing our narrative writing with our text The Firemaker’s Daughter by Phillip Pullman. Next week we will be boxing up the chapter about Lila’s meeting with Razvani the Fire Fiend, starting to create our own villain and working towards writing our own fiery scene. After that we will be starting a unit about money so it would be useful for children to have gained an understanding of money at home which may help them in class. In other news, Mrs Adams will no longer be covering Millennium class during my planning time out of class. As of Tuesday, Mrs Grundey will be covering the class once a week. We of course wish to send Mrs Adams off to maternity leave with all our support and best wishes!
Please remind your child that SATS take place next week for both Year 2 and Year 6. They will need to be patient and considerate during this time and quiet as they move around the school. We would like to say good luck to all involved!
Also, we will be having a small class party next Friday in celebration of both the end of SATS and the royal wedding. Children will be allowed to wear their own clothes with a red, white and blue theme. Further details to follow at the start of next week!

In Maths, we are going to learn to add and subtract three digit and ones, three digit and two digit numbers and finally three digit numbers.
In English, we will substitute a character from the story of Romulus and Remus and write our substitution narratives.
In Art, we will create our own mosaic patterns.
In Science, we will use the results of our investigation to write a conclusion and compare it with others.
Important information.
17th May 2018, Blackfriars will go to the Museum of London a study trip.
18th May 2018 we will have activities to celebrate the royal wedding.
Please encourage your child to use Mathletics. There is homework set for this week.

Our topic for this term is called ‘Let It Grow’ linked to our science curriculum about plants.
English
In English, we will be reading a new text called ‘Katie’s Picture Show’ by James Mayhew. Children will be editing their character descriptions of Katie against the Year 1 Writing criteria. They will also plan and write their own narrative which is based on the painting – Tiger in the Tropical Storm by Henri Rousseau.

Maths
In Maths, we will continue our understanding of arrays in multiplication to reason and problem solve.
Children will also be revisiting division using sharing and grouping.
Science
We will continue our learning about different plant and tree parts as well as naming and identifying flowering plants and trees in the local area. Children will be planning and writing a non-chronological report about ‘Spring’-animals, plants and trees, weather and clothes, length of day and any other facts.
Art
Children will be making collages of a tropical jungle for a tiger and use it as a setting for their creative narrative in English.
P.E
Children will continue developing their throwing and catching skills using a ball or a beanbag. They will practise bouncing, dribbling, rolling, under arm throws, over arm throws and catches using correct posture and skills. They will also create their own dance movements.
PSHE
Our topic is called ‘Relationships’. Children will be talking about feelings – how to deal with it.
Music
We will continue to sing using our voices creatively and learn about rhythm and tempo.
R.E.
We will be continuing our learning about different religions focusing on basic principles of Hinduism.
Home work
Homework is sent home every Friday and should be promptly returned on Wednesday please. Homework is also set weekly related to the concepts children are learning.
*If your child attends an After school sports club and takes their P.E kit home, kindly return the P.E kit the next day. A lot of the children have been upset and disappointed as they have missed their P.E sessions as a result of not having kits.

Maths:
Over the next few weeks, we shall be learning all about percentages and how to find their fraction and decimal equivalents.
English:
We shall be focusing on retelling the first chapter of Alice in Wonderland. We shall be looking at developing story maps and creating character profiles for the main character.
Reading:
Children should be reading at home every evening. They are expected to complete a book review, using the Y5 grammar expectations, once completed. If they don’t already, please encourage your child with their reading at home as it is hugely important. We shall soon be starting our new class novel, Alice in Wonderland. You can purchase a copy here.
PE:
Your children will have taken a letter home on Thursday 22nd February, detailing which swimming group that they are in. Below is a reminder of the key dates and swimming kit that they will need.
Group A Tuesday 27th February-Tuesday 27th March
Group B Tuesday 17th April-Tuesday 22nd May (No swimming on the 15th May)
Group C Tuesday 5th June – Tuesday 3rd July
Please can you make sure that they bring a swimming costume (preferably NOT a bikini for girls and NOT long shorts for boys), towel and, if they have long hair, a swimming hat all in a bag that can be easily identifiable. Children will be taught how to swim by 2 qualified swimming instructors including a teacher from Whitgift school and no prior knowledge of how to swim is needed. Children will be assessed the first week and then put into suitable groups with no child entering the deep end unless they can swim a length unaided. A trained lifeguard will also be present.
Children who are not going swimming during this time will still have a PE lesson. All children will continue to have their Thursday PE lesson.
Music:
We shall be continuing our Soundstart lessons with Mr Regan.
Art:
We shall be designing a class tablecloth, representing Greek patterns, using the paste resist process. This week, we shall be tracing our designs onto cloth, using paste to repeat our designs.
RE:
Mrs Grundey and Mrs Swift will be taking our RE sessions on Tuesday afternoons. This term we shall be looking at Judaism.
French:
Mrs Grundey and Mrs Swift will also be taking our French sessions this term. This term we shall be looking at clothes!
