English – Writing

The children will be using pictures to stimulate their writing in their writing journal. We will encourage the children to ensure that they use features of Year 2 writing.

  • write simple coherent narratives about personal experiences and those of others (real of fiction)
  • write about real events, recording these simply and clearly
  • demarcate most sentences in their writing with capital letters and full stops, and use question marks correctly when required
  • use present and past tense correctly and consistently
  • use co-ordination (e.g. or/ and/ but ) and some subordination (e.g. when/if/that/because) to join clauses
  • segment spoken words into phonemes and represent these by graphemes, spelling many of the words correctly and making phonically-plausible attempts at others
  • spell many common exception words
  • form capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower-case letters
  • use spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters

English- reading
We will start a new book called The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl. We will also be learning some new reading skills as a whole class using ERIC. The children will build their repertoire of different reading skills through the year.
When reading with your child, please use VIPERS when asking them questions on the book they are reading.
This week the children will sit a longer style SATS reading paper.

Paper 2, children are given a booklet of longer texts (between 800 and 1100 words) and questions in a separate answer booklet. The test lasts approximately 40 minutes.

Paper 2 is more challenging than Paper 1, but in each paper easier questions appear at the beginning and more difficult ones later on.

What kinds of questions are there?

There will be a mixture of question types. In some, your child will need to choose an answer (selected responses). For others, they will need to write their own answer (short and extended responses).

Examples of selected response questions include:

Multiple choice, e.g. What is Lucy looking for in the story? Tick one of the boxes below.
Ranking/ordering, e.g. Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story.
Matching, e.g. Match the character to what they do in the story.
Labelling, e.g. Label the text to show the title.

Examples of short response questions include:

Find and copy, e.g. Find and copy one word that shows how Lucy is feeling.
Short response, e.g. What does Lucy eat?

Examples of extended response questions include:

Open-ended response, e.g. Why did Lucy write the letter to her grandmother? Give two reasons.

Maths

  • to make multiplication sentences from pictures

    Children could say there are 5 groups of 1. This is the same as 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5. Which is the same as 5 x 1
  • Children will be introduced to arrays
Arrays show equal groups in rows and colums.

ICT

Our ICT slot is on Tuesday afternoon. We are game testers. During this unit, the children will play and evaluate simple scratch games. We will discuss age ratings and increasing game addiction.

Music
Ministrings will continue every Wednesday. This week we will play some instruments that belong in the string family.
PE
Our PE slot is on Monday afternoon. We are currently focusing on balance and co-ordination.
Please ensure all children have their full PE kit in school (fully named).
PSHE
We have introduced the children to a programme called Zones of Regulation which we are hoping will help regulate feelings and emotions and offer the children the correct way to talk about their feelings. This week  we will continue to  think of suitable ways to regulate their feelings and match emotions to different zones.

Is your child an author?

If yes, head over to Grant Koper’s website. Your child has the opportunity to have their story published on his website and their story read out of YouTube by Grant himself!!!
