AUTUMN TERM TOPIC: All about me

LITERACY:

Book Focus: Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson

The children really enjoyed this lovely book and this week they will learn a range of new vocabulary to describe the various characters which feature in the story. We will focus on listening for the initial sound in words as we read the story together, creating funny alliterative phrases to describe each character eg. the slinky, slithery snake

Phonics: This term in Phonics we have been focusing on sound discrimination, the children have been listening to a range of songs and rhymes and exploring a range of different environmental, instrumental and body percussion sounds.

After half term the children will start learning about letter sounds. This short video will help them with letter(grapheme) recognition and sound(phoneme) pronunciation:

TOPIC – Knowledge and Understanding of the World:

We will talk about how different people celebrate and the children will learn about Diwali- the Hindu festival of lights which will take place around the 19th October this year.

They will learn how to represent these numbers as numerals and as quantities; to order these numbers from the smallest quantity to the largest quantity along a number line. AUTUMN TERM TOPIC: All about me

LITERACY:

Book Focus: Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson

This clever and charming tale about a little monkey who goes in search of his mum will keep the children guessing all the way to the end of the book. Our shared reading of this book will act as a stimulus for a range of learning this week.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World: We will be talking about the wild animals which feature in this week’s focus book. We will discuss different animal habitats and explore animal patterns

Personal, Social and Emotional Development: We will continue to encourage our ethos of using ‘kind hands‘ and that ‘sharing is caring’. We would appreciate if these phrases could also be used at home.

Maths: The children will be learning all about numbers within 5. They will learn how to represent these numbers as numerals and as quantities; to order these numbers from the smallest quantity to the largest quantity along a number line. The children will learn to use a range of resources to support their understanding of representing numbers within 5.

Early Morning Work: the children will start practising letter formation and writing their names every morning as soon as they enter the classroom, so please ensure your child arrives promptly at 8.50.

Helping your child develop independence: You could help by allowing your child to take responsibility for putting their  bookbags into the boxes by themselves and by allowing them to enter the classroom by themselves. Also it would help if  you could please exit as soon as your child enters the classroom to ensure the class doorway area is clear to allow other children to enter the classroom. [/dropshadowbox]
