How can we pay attention to our feelings?
[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Feelings are part of what makes us being human. Sometimes they can be baffling, overwhelming, confusing…they can lead us to behave in unexpected ways. How can we become more familiar with our feelings, especially when we are very young?[/dropshadowbox]
[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]At Howard Primary we use the language of Zones of Regulation and we see feelings also as having physical signs. We talk about feeling uncomfortable and our cheeks getting hotter. We talk about how feeling anxious can make our shoulders tense up or our palms become sweaty. Slowly we get to know what feelings feel like and we learn new words to express ourselves. We learn how to be emotionally literate.[/dropshadowbox]
We classify feelings/emotions and how they can make our body feel into four zones:
Green Zone = when you are ready – “good to go.” You feel happy, calm, focused, ready to learn
Blue Zone = when your body is running slowly, such as when you are tired, sick, sad or bored.
Yellow Zone = when you feel your engine is running high, such as when you are frustrated, overwhelmed, silly, wiggly, excited, worried, anxious or surprised.
Red Zone = is when you have “flipped your lid.” You have extreme feelings such as panic, uncontrolled anger, aggression or elation.
We play games to familiarise ourselves with the language of feelings as children might only know the word happy and angry to express their feelings. Games such as Emotions Bingo or Let’s sort our feelings out
Why not have a go at the game below?
The answers are in this file:
Answer_ Emoji Zones Matching chart
Let’s look at ANXIETY more closely.
How could it make our body feel? Which unexpected behaviours could anxiety lead us to display?
This cartoon explains how baffling feelings can be for children and adults. That is why it is very important to get to know our emotions and how they can affect our behaviour and self worth.
Emotional literacy does not just happen, it is a skill which can be taught. Awareness is the first step on the road to emotional literacy.

Summer 1, Week 1 – I can’t believe it!
Good morning and welcome back after the Easter break, which probably didn’t feel like a real break.
Anyway, we hope you all had an enjoyable time – as much as possible. Thank you so much for your commitment last half-term, the past and the coming weeks will surely go down in history.
To keep things as “normal” as possible, we would like to continue in the same pattern as before the holidays, which means that we will release the lessons on a daily basis. Task sheets will be sent in .doc form so that you can fill them in on the computer and then return them to us via Class-Dojo. However, we will take the feedback on board and reduce the workload to make it more realistic and achievable.
Please make sure you check the Class-Blog on a daily basis (lesson resources will be published at around 9am). This half-term, we would like to make more use of projects so that we have a huge treasure-chest of work to update our displays while you are at home and/or straight after the end of the lockdown that we are currently in.
Below is our time-table for the week. Please make sure you use it to structure your day as organisation is important, it helps keeping focussed and prevents boredom as well as feeling lost in the unknown. Just in general, please remember …

Maths: Please go through the information for Summer 1, Week 1, Lesson Three (Complements to 1) on White-Rose and complete the related tasks (on paper). https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/
English:
- Check and correct yesterday‘s answers.
-
Complete today‘s SpaG tasks. (The answers will arrive tomorrow.)
- Our focus for today – and we will revisit this over the next weeks – are the tenses as they have to be consistent and accurate in our writing. First, please watch (and sing) the following explanation of what verbs are.
- Then, please listen to the next, genius videos/explanations.
- After that, create a learning-poster or mindmap of the tenses in English. Include the past tenses, present and future in their simple, continuous and perfect form. Please send us your posters. Use these for help (Twinkl-present-tenses-posters Twinkl-verb-tenses-posters ).
- Remember to use your own wording and sentences as copying something is not helping with memorising/learning.
Reading: Well done to the people who found a copy of “Street Child” in their house or have purchased it. You can read it on Amazon Kindle. I believe it might even be free as Mr Jalloh said. Here is our link (https://www.spreaker.com/user/12356852/chapter-2-stick-man ) and here are our questions (StreetChild-chapter 2 – The Stick Man):
-
Describe Mr Stick.
-

-
Describe how you think the children feel.
-
Explain how believable mum’s statement “I’ll find us a home,” […] “Don‘t worry.“
Music: Remember to check in and practise your best singing voices just like we do every day. It keeps up the spirit, gives you a great feeling, improves your voice and can hugely help with the learning/memorising things.
I truly love the Tuesday song, we used to sing it in assemblies in my previous school. So inspiring and gripping. Let‘s sing it when we are back in the real/physical classroom!
Geography: On the topic of singing, have you heard that song? It’s been stuck in my ears for days now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#f9c3f7″ border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Dear Reception Parents
Welcome back after the Spring/Easter home-cation. We hope you and the children managed to fit in some fun activities and lots of rest during the last 2 weeks.
By now, most of you have signed up to Class Dojo and are enjoying interacting with Reception staff about your child’s learning. We are aware that some of you may be experiencing difficulties locating your child’s portfolio on Class Dojo. Please don’t worry, we will be getting in touch with you over the coming weeks to help with some of the minor technical issues you may be experiencing. Please use the messaging function on the app to let us know if you are still experiencing difficulties.
Also, for those who prefer to see information about learning activities on the blog, we will continue to post a weekly blog every Monday with a list of new and old links to useful learning resources.
We hope that you have all now settled into a comfortable family routine for learning and now that the school term has started again, we will continue with home learning activities for the children. Please remember that we do not expect you to do all of the activities suggested. They are there if you need them and we ask that you do what is manageable within your own family circumstances.
Don’t forget to check in on Class Dojo for a welcome message and learning video from Miss Pillay at 9.00am on Monday 20th April.
Kind Regards.

Every family has different needs, So, please plan your week according to your own family’s needs.
Here are some tips to consider when organising homelearning :
- Decide, as a family, what are your daily weekday priorities
- Decide on a set weekday wake up time for the children. Remember to distinguish between weekdays and weekend routines
- Get the children settled into their getting reading for learning routines, use the poster they made to remind them eg, get out of bed, help to make up the bed, brush your teeth, etc
- Start your homelearning by checking off the previous day on the calendar they made and talking about today’s date and weather
- Watch or read the daily morning Class Story on Class Dojo
- You can decide which activity to do first, making sure to allow for breaks and free time. Spread the activities over the week.
- Agree a suitable lunchtime with your child with some free playtime afterwards but remind them to return for afternoon learning if that is what you have decided as a family. If not, try to schedule some physical activities or go out for your daily walk
- Afternoon learning could include a hands on project or fun challenge.
- Don’t forget to return to Class Dojo at 3.20 every weekday for a storytime.
- Use the links below to decide which activities you will do each day, try to include a little bit of maths, reading, writing activities throughout the week.
- Most importantly, don’t set yourself too many activities, try to spread the activities across the week and if you or your children become frustrated, the best advice is to take a break and do something you all enjoy. You can always return to activities later. Remember, there are no deadlines or time limits on activities.

A literacy game where you need to sort words into either proper nouns, common nouns, adjectives or comparative adjectives so that you can escape from the Forbidden Chamber!
The Quest of Comma Castle
Who’d have thought the humble comma could be the difference between life and death? Well, it is in The Quest of Comma Castle where you need to save a diamond from the Plinth of the Perishing Pit, negotiating dragons, bottomless pits and other deadly obstacles, all by answering grammar questions. There are four difficulty settings, and six sections to play through. Real heroes know their synonyms and antonyms.

Think about the conversations of what we would like to see in your writing that we have during our English lessons. It is important that you keep up the effort with your writing.
