Happy return – Summer 2
[dropshadowbox align=”center” effect=”raised” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#e5e3f8″ border_width=”4″ border_color=”#1c7d9d” ]Welcome back to the new and very exciting half-term.[/dropshadowbox]
Over the next weeks in Maths, we will move away from the revision and start closing the gaps of small topics that we have not yet had the chance to cover in Year 5 and with the uncertainty of the coming weeks, we don’t want to leave to chance. This will include some Geometry (especially “position and direction” which we will explore with our own videos) and Statistics.
Equally, in English we will catch-up with a few useful aspects of the daily lessons from BBC Bitesize, spiced up with some Pobble starter and vocabulary work as well as useful elements of lessons from our new scheme called “Power of Reading” with regards to our new class-novel “Floodland” by Marcus Sedgwick. (This should link nicely with our Geography learning.)
In RE, we will explore – not at all feeling a little Guinea-piggish – the topic “Journey of life” from the Croydon Syllabus.
During your Science learning, we will continue with some exciting explorations in “Properties of materials and change”. This will be supplemented by a selection of very useful Science lessons from BBC Bitesize and STEM.
We are incredibly excited about Geography as we will move on to the topic “Rivers” where we will explore the features of rivers, but also look at their benefits and threats as well as their huge importance in different parts of this world. You will have the chance to build a river model, test it out and also wow us with a case study of a river of your choice.
Our thinking for Art needs to be finalised since we are not starting with it until next week.
In Spanish, we now will all get access to a homelearning pack from language-angels and first of all, continue with our learning about “Mi casa”.
Over this half-term, we would love to find some time for DT that doesn’t involve baking or cooking, but designing and constructing.
This week’s timetable:

-
Explain the word ragged in your own words and also put it into a sentence.
-
Explain why the woman couldn’t go with Jim.

-
Find 2 reasons the woman didn’t help the street boys.
-
List two facts we find out about Davey.
-
Explain how we know that Davey and the other boys didn’t like the idea of school.
-
What did Jim give Shrimps when he returned to the crate?

What is your opinion on the ending of this chapter? What would you have done differently as the author? Why?
Science:
-
To warm up, please watch the following video and list all possible changes you have spotted. (Don’t read the description – spoiler alert!)
-
Then group them into
-
-
reversible: … and

irreversible: …
-
-

-
Are the following test reversible or irreversible? How do you know? If you have the resources, please feel free to try them out – if your parents are ok with it.
-
Mixing water and plaster (Plaster of Paris ideally) – I had to use Finishing Plaster as I didn’t have any other. That’s why it looks a bit like … chocolate mousse. Reuben noticed that it got a bit warmer when mixing and then it solidified.
-
Heating an egg
-
Mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. (Shame that the video size is too large. I really need to fix that.)
-
-
-
When burning a candle and placing a jar over it, I noticed that the candle gradually extinguishes and the jar on the inside becomes misty with water droplets. Where does the water come from?
-
-
Find the answer here: https://www.thenakedscientists.com/get-naked/experiments/getting-water-candle
-
-
Main investigation:
-
Now, to the main investigation. We had great fun with this, but the video is too large. Here is a picture of the outcome.
-
-
-
Prediction: What happens when we mix milk with vinegar?
-
Method: Take about 150-200ml of milk (full-fat or semi-skimmed) and heat it in a pan.
-
-
-
As soon as the milk starts to boil, turn off the heat, stir the liquid and add 15ml of vinegar.
-
Observe what happens.
-
For your next step, read the attached document.
-
-
-
-
Once you separated the mixture and let the casein dry, you have created plastic.
-
-
-
If you want to, you could repeat this and add food colouring to the milk which should result in colourful plastic.

Main task/recording: Use the attached document. Su2-Wk1-Recording
I am gutted as this was the experiment (besides our rockets in Autumn term) that I was so looking forward to this year, but unfortunately, we fear that there won’t be time to do this in class, hence it is this week’s Science investigation. Sorry, parents, but it might not be the most pleasantly smelling experiment on the planet.

Science
There is one more lesson on plants before moving on to work on the body. Use the following video clip to learn about how a plant transports water.
Continue to look after your plant and keep your diary up to date.
Topic
Start by watching this video clip.
Use the internet to find out about the spread of germs and why it is important to wash our hands and keep things clean. Make a hygiene poster to promote keeping things clean and washing hands.
RE
RE – Pentecost Sunday is on 31st May. Your child can find out about Pentecost using the PowerPoint below.
The children can then make a paper helicopter using either using the template below or by folding and cutting a plain piece of paper.
They can then using flame colours (red, yellow and orange) to decorate their helicopter. They will need something heavy (e.g a paper clip) for the bottom of their helicopter. We celebrate the children’s languages as part of their learning about Pentecost. How many languages can your child speak as they drop their helicopter?

English
The Lighthouse
Day 1 – Create a story map of the key events from ‘The Lighthouse’.
Using adverbials of time and arrows linking to each image, recount the key events of the clip. After, list what you think what could be some key vocabulary relating to this topic. Remember to use ambitious vocabulary, figurative language, expanded noun phrases or even some powerful verbs. Most importantly, make sure that you have checked the spellings by using a dictionary (if you don’t have one at home, you can use one online).
Day 2 – Hotseating activity as the Lighthouse Keeper.
What sorts of questions would you like to ask him? Record your questions on a table with two columns:
Remember that open questions always require a longer answer.
After writing at least 5 questions for each, either with a parent or by yourself, answer the questions as the Lighthouse Keeper.
Day 3 – Planning a newspaper report
Use the examples to refresh your memory back to our unit on newspaper reports we completed earlier in the year…
Day 4 – L.O. I can write and edit a newspaper report.
Using your planning sheet and the resources below, write your newspaper report. Once finished, check against the key features to see if you can up-level any further.

History
L.O. To develop chronological understanding about Benin
Key Question – When was the Benin Kingdom in power?
Starter –
What do you know already about Benin?
What would you like to know about Benin?
Mind map these two questions in your book/paper. Share and group types of questions, e.g. life questions, geography questions, leadership qus etc.
Talk through the info slides that set Benin in context of time and place. One map shows where the Benin Kingdom was and the other is a modern map of Africa. Point out on the modern map that there is a country called Benin now, but that this was named after the Kingdom and is not in the same place.
Input and development –
Order the periods of history (on the slides) in chronological order.
Parent help – Label the centuries in which the Benin Kingdom was in existence (900 – 1897 AD) with a coloured sticker / symbol so it stands out.
What do the children think they mean?
Ancient Egypt and the Stone Age, although important periods in the primary curriculum, are not featured here since they are before the earliest date on this timeline, 1000BC
The WWII symbols is smaller to indicate comparative scale.
Which periods in history that we have studied ran concurrently? What was the longest period in history of these examples?
In books, write a summary of what you have learnt.
Plenary –
Look at the end date of the Kingdom of Benin. (1897). Why do you think this powerful, long lasting Kingdom might have come to an end in 1897?
Spanish
Watch the online lesson and practise your Spanish numbers.

History-L.O-To learn all about Egyptian gods and goddesses and begin to find out what the ancient Egyptians believed.
#Lesson Presentation Egyptian Gods
Ancient-Egyptian-Gods-Differentiated-Comprehension-Activity_ver_8
Use the first sheet of this comprehension to find out about an ancient Egyptian god or goddess. Then use the Egypt’s Got Talent sheet or a piece of paper to record all you have found out about your god or goddess to convince the judges yours is best. Could you use this god or goddess as the one you use for your mask design? If you want something extra to do you could do one of the comprehensions on the fact sheet to test your understanding.
Activity Sheet Ancient Egypt’s Got Talent
R.E-L.O-I know how the religion of Islam began
https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/foundation/how-did-the-religion-of-islam-begin-year-4-wk5-1
Complete the introductory quiz to test your previous knowledge. Then click on next activity or the green dots at the bottom of the page to move on to the lesson video. You will be making a timeline of the prophet Muhammed’s life. Remember not to draw pictures of Muhammed as this is seen as highly disrespectful.
Latin- This week as well as practising sentence construction, we are introducing prepositions (a word that describes the position of a person or thing in time or space, eg, under the table). See if you can fit them into the sentences in the exercise Latin Prepositions
Music- More songs to get you moving and feeling happy. This week features songs about kindness https://www.outoftheark.co.uk/ootam-at-home/
Time for a break- Feeling a bit stiff and frustrated? I tried doing some Tai Chi with Thomas to relax and stretch out. It feels a little strange and silly at first but once you get used to the movements it is really quite calming (we muted the video and played our own relaxing music choices)
