Online Safety Week
This week is Online Safety Week. During this safety themed week we will be discussing the ways we can keep ourselves safe when using different types of technology. We will discuss some of the different online activities that children (of this age) engage in and the importance of ensuring these activities are supervised by a responsible adult. We will also talk to the children about what to do if they feel worried about something they may see online. The children’s learning this week will be centred on these aspects of online safety.
Group Phonics Focus
Miss Pillay and Miss Oldman’s groups: blending cvc words, and securing instant recognition and formation of all Phase 2 sounds
Miss Dale’s group: blending cvc words and securing instant recognition of Phase 3 digraphs within a word.
Miss Thompson’s group: Review Phase 3 long vowel sounds: /ai/, /ee/, /igh/, /oa/ and /oo/ and securing instant recognition of these sounds within a word. [/dropshadowbox]

Week Beginning 5th February 2018
This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:
Writing
We have just read Dr Xargle’s Book of Earthlets which is written from the perspective of an ‘alien’ who observes the strange behaviour of humans. It is incredibly funny and will form the basis for our next unit of work. So far we have looked at the nonsense words/ phrases in the story and what they might mean. Our focus on the vocabulary really builds a strong foundation for the rest of our work.
Next week we will be continuing to embed words and phrases from the text and doing some drama based on the story.
Reading
We will be exploring different picture books with an alien/ space theme.
Phonics/ SPaG
This week we will be focusing on past and present tense; looking at irregular verb changes e.g. go/ went, sing/ sang, catch/ caught and adding the -ed suffix. We will also be looking at the ‘w’ special rule for spelling e.g. when a word sounds like it has /o/ but is spelt with an /a/. Examples of this rule are: wallet, wanted, wash, wasp.
Maths
We have moved onto multiplication proper. We will be recognising equal groups, making equal groups and adding equal groups.
We have been using the following stem sentence to help us.
There are ___ equal groups with ___ in each group. There are ____ _____s.
There are ____ altogether.
This image shows:
There are 3 equal groups with 2 in each group. There are 3 2s. There are 6 altogether.
When we come to adding equal groups we will be using this format.
So there are two 3s.
3+3=6. (multiplication as repeated addition).
The groups could also be represented using two ‘three’ pieces of numicon. They could be represented as two jumps of three on a numberline. They could be represented using two groups of three ones.
We are making links between the above stem sentence and repeated additions to multiplication. For example: 3+3+3 = 3×3 or 5+5+5+5= 4×5.
By the end of the week we will be using the strategy of arrays to calculate with multiplication.
EXAMPLE:
We will also be using counting strategies to calculate with the 2,5,and 10x tables.
PSHE
We will be moving onto our next module of Zippy’s Friends: what makes a good friend? Please speak to your child about these sessions (which always take place on a Thursday afternoon).
P.E.
We are going to be doing dance on a Monday and doing circuit training on Thursdays.
Science
We are looking at differences between plants and animals and variation between animals. We will also be looking at seasonal changes.

Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:
English- We will be continuing our unit of work relating to our rainforest topic by looking at a poem For Forest by Grace Nichols and comparing it to the other books we have read. A link to the poet performing her poem can be found below:
https://www.clpe.org.uk/poetryline/poets/nichols-grace
Maths- We are continuing to work on Multiplication and Division. We will be moving on to thinking about factor pairs and multiples.
Alongside this we will be doing a weekly times table challenge and working towards membership of the 100 or 144 club and I would like all children to work hard on their tables to achieve this!
Reading- All children read with an adult at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme. After this adult led session they complete tasks relating to the text or linked to current English and Spelling focuses. We continue to read stories as a class.
ICT- We are still holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr
This week in ICT we will be continuing our fact-files about the rainforest animals they have researched.
PE- PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and children will need their PE kits. I would also like to remind you that the school policy is that all earrings should be removed, hair should be tied back and tights should be removed when getting changed.
I would also ask that PE kits stay in school between Monday and Friday as occasionally we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in additional activities.
This half term we will be doing Gym sequences, including methods of travelling including a jump, and a Boot camp of circuits to improve fitness, stamina and muscle tone and will continue to run the daily mile.
Topic- Our topic for this term is rainforests. We will be learning about their strata and make up, the animals and people who live there and the effects of deforestation and pollution. We will now be moving on to learning about the types of plants found in the rainforest which can be used for medicines, using the book The Shaman’s Apprentice.
PSHE- We will be starting a new scheme of work called Apple’s friends which will help children to understand their feelings and relationships with others. There will also be some simple tasks for the children to complete at home.
In addition to this we will be doing some lessons focusing on the differences between helpful and unhelpful pressure and the benefit of talking to trusted adults when the need arises.
Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday.
In addition to tasks given out I expect the children to read every day and continue to practise the multiplication tables.
I will be collecting the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly.
Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading.
If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note.
Successes– Well done to William, Aishu, Irshad and Lizzy who all received merit cards this week! Well done to Atif, Erin, Malachi, Edmund, Leon, and William who have reached the 100 club!
