Welcome back after half term!

Maths:
This week, we shall be looking at the formal method for multiplication.

English:

This week, we shall be continuing our unit, film reviews. We shall be writing a review, based on the remake of Beauty and the Beast.

SPAG:

We shall be continuing to look at adding brackets for parenthesis. Furthermore, we shall be branching out with our vocabulary and looking at the Y5/6 statutory spelling list.

Reading:

We have started our new class book, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Children are more than welcome to purchase a copy to read along in class.

In Year 5, children are responsible for changing their own books independently. We do ask that children read at home everyday and mark this by a simple comment in their homework diary. Please do encourage your child to read aloud, even though they are in Year 5, to build the stamina with their fluency.

Example comment:

Name of Book: Gangsta Granny

Peter read from page 12-16. He struggled on the words ‘inspiration’ and ‘necessary’.

PE:

Our PE lessons will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit on these days.

Music:

Soundstart lessons, with Mr Regan, shall start this week. This is where Year 5 pupils will have the chance to learn both the guitar and keyboard.

RE:

Mrs Forde will continue to teach the children all about Christianity on Wednesday afternoons.

Computing:

We shall be looking at word processing skills and how to use features to write a newspaper report.

French:

We shall be looking at the unit of pets this week, As-tu un animal?

History:

We shall be looking at key events in the history of Ancient Greece.

Week Beginning 16th November 2018

In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will be learning to multiply and divide by eight and to solve multiplication and division problems.
  • In English we will complete our film reviews before moving on to some new work based on Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp by Philip Pullman.
  • In topic time we will write a fact sheet on a Bronze Age civilisation based on the research we conducted last week.
  • In Science we will investigate reflection by taking part in a carousel of different activities.

PE is on Tuesday and Friday and children need their PE kits on those days. Jewellery  (including earings). Should not be worn for PE.

English : Our new text is ‘Lonely Beast’. The children will be predicting what might happen in the story and they will be learning how to generate questions.

Children will be learning about materials. They will be identifying, naming and describing simple properties of everyday materials.

PSHE:

Anti Bullying Week- Children will be talking about bullying. What is bullying? What are the types of bullying-Physical and emotional.

RE:

We will be talking about where Christians go to worship- Church. What can we see inside a church?

PE:

We will be learning some dance movements and show them how to move in different ways using the beat/rhythm of song.

Music:

We will be learning Christmas play songs.

Week beginning 12th November

This week:

  • In Maths we will begin multiplying and dividing by 4.
  • In English we will plan and write film reviews of Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, following our visit to the cinema.
  • In Science we will learn about white being made up of other colours.
  • In History we will identify the differences between Stone and Bronze, and what Bronze objects were used for.

Writing

We have been continuing to work on our autumn poems. You will have seen the homework we sent home last week about similes (e.g the girl floated into the room like a cloud/ he is as fast as lightning). We have been using this technique in our learning. We are also focusing on the use of alliteration and onomatopoeia. Alliteration is where the same letter/ sound is repeated in a sentence. For example: the sneaky squirrels scavenged silently for their nuts.

Reading

We are continuing to read The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl.

Maths

Due to a variety of reasons, we are still continuing with our work on addition and subtraction this week. We will also be giving the children a short calculating paper soon.

Geography

We are continuing to compare Croydon to Darwin, Australia.

Science

We will be looking at materials and their properties this half term.

RE:

We will be learning about harvest and discuss how it is celebrated around the world.

PE:

We will continue to develop balancing skills as well as listening skills and travelling in different ways.

We will be learning more harvest songs.

Southwark News Week Beginning 12th November 2018

 

A great big thank you to Zoe Henry  from the Theatre Bug Dance Company who taught an exciting street dance class with year 4 on Friday.

What are we learning this week

Maths – This week, we will be learning to multiply by 10 and 100 and understanding that this is the same as a number getting 10 and 100 times bigger and not just adding a 0 or 00 to a number. This is essential understanding for our upcoming work on decimals. Children will be given a username and password to a new free maths programme we will be trialling  to support your child’s knowledge and understanding of the key year 4 objective-multiplication and division facts to 12×12 this week called J2blast.

English –This week we will be completing our written explanation texts-How to Draw Horrid Henry by writing a conclusion and self and peer assessing. We will then be amending our writing according to the feedback.

Topic – We will be completing our topic of Remembrance this week by writing poems to reflect our understanding of how children were affected by WWI.

I.C.T-We will be continuing to develop our PowerPoint presentation skills by including animation and transition between slides.

 

Important information

We will be watching Goosebumps at Grants cinema on Wednesday as part of Croydon INTO festival. 

Due to unforeseen circumstances Friday’s additional cinema trip has been cancelled. A letter will be going out to explain further.

This week, we shall be  continuing to look  a adding and subtracting  fractions with unrelated denominators and/or mixed numbers.

English:

We shall  be  writing a film review of the film Zoo,  in line with our upcoming trip to the cinema as part of the Into Film Festival. We shall be looking at how to plan, write an edit an effective film review.

SPAG:

we continue to prepare for the tests in this subject

we have reviewed, all the year4/5 compulsory spellings and have completed the first set of year 6 statutory words.

The second set of words are:

ancient, apparent, appreciate, attached, available, average,  awkward, bargain, bruise, category, cemetery.

I am happy to provide you with the full set of words if  you would like.

Reading: The class book is holes by Louis Suchar.

The children are quite excited about their first school trip this week on Tuesday 13th November Thank you to all those parents who are able to join us as helpers.

Please take note of the following:

• Please arrive at school promptly at 8.50am as preparation is required before we walk to the cinema.

• Parent helpers will be provided with a guide which explains our expectations for the morning.

• If you are helping, your younger children must not accompany you as we will need your undivided attention on the day.

• For health and safety reasons we do not give the children snacks at any point during the trip, so please do not bring any snacks with you.

• At all times during the trip you will be expected to remain with your group of children and follow the leading staff member.

Please keep sound sheet at home and continue to practise saying and writing these sounds every day. As your child continues to learn more letter sounds they may forget the earlier sounds taught so it is important to practise daily recognition and writing (using each of the sound cues eg /a/ – round the apple , down the leaf)
