Week Beginning 26th November
In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;
- In mathematics we will continue our work on fractions. We will learn to count in tenths and to find fractions of quantities.
- In English we will plan and write a story based on Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp by Phillip Pullman.
- In science we will learn about the spectrum of light.
- In history children will research an aspect of Iron Age life of their own choice.
- In RE we will begin our work on Christianity leading up to Christmas. We will learn about the symbolism behind the Christingle.
Learning times tables is an important part of our home learning in Waterloo Bridge Class. Children are given their times table to learn each Monday and there is a test every Friday.
Week commencing 26th November
Please find an update about what we will be learning in Millennium this week;
English- We will be using a video clip to inspire our writing in English this week. We will be practising all of our writing skills we have used do far (fronted adverbial phrases, strong openings, descriptive language, paragraphing etc) and learning to include expanded noun phrases in our work as well. Click on the link below to watch the clip.

Reading- All children should be reading at home every day and handing their record books in each day to be checked. They will be reading in guided groups with an adult at least once each week.
Maths- We are working on multiplication and division. We will be multiplying and dividing by 6, 7 and 9.
In addition to this, all children need to be practising the multiplication tables as one of the Year 4 objectives is know the tables and related division facts to 12×12. There will be a weekly test in class.
There is a free interactive game we use often in class as a starter which children can also access at home. Please find the link below;

Southwark News Week beginning 19th November 2018
What are we learning this week
Maths – This week, we will be multiply and dividing by 10 and 100 and understanding that this is the same as a number getting 10 and 100 times bigger or smaller and not just adding or taking away a 0 or 00 to a number. This is essential understanding for our upcoming work on decimals. Children have been given a username and password stuck in their homework diaries to a new free maths programme we will be trialling to support your child’s knowledge and understanding of the key year 4 objective-multiplication and division facts to 12×12 this week called J2blast.
Children have been using the following game in class to revise their mental subtraction.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/subtraction-grids
English –After the success of our written explanation texts-How to Draw Horrid Henry, children will be researching an preparing to present their own how to… explanation scripts.
Topic – We will be returning to our topic-Anglo-Saxons and Vikings looking at religion and beliefs in this period.
I.C.T-We will be continuing to develop our PowerPoint presentation skills by including animation between slides.
Congratulations go to team Fireworks with an amazing 250 marbles this week and to Solly, Junaid and Daisy who all received merits this week. Evie is our reader of the week, well done! The whole year group behaved impeccably during our trip to the cinema this week and we would like to say thank you to the parents who came along with us.
Dates for the diary
Saturday 15th December-Christmas Fair
Week beginning 19th November 2018
Writing
We were so impressed with the behaviour of Year 2 on our trip to the cinema! They represented our school beautifully. We hope the children enjoyed the film as much as we did! Thank you so much to those of you who offered/ were able to help.
This week we will be beginning our unit on film reviews. On Monday we will be story mapping Peter Rabbit to help us identify the key characters/ events of the story. On Tuesday the children will be completing a concept map similar to the ones they created about Autumn. We will then look at the key features of a film review with a strong focus on a synopsis (an overview of the film that does not give too much information away).
Reading
We are continuing to read The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl.
Maths
This week we will be looking at adding three one digit numbers. For example: 3+4+6= __. We will also be looking at missing number problems within this. For example: 4+__+3=12. If we know this then we also know that 12-4-3=__ (the missing number). This is an example of how you can use inverse operations to solve calculations.
We will also be doing a short assessment to conclude our first unit on addition and subtraction before we move onto money.
Your children will need to recognise the value of all coins and notes. We will be using coins to find different ways of making the same amounts. As much practical experience with money as possible is essential for reinforcing their understanding of it in a real life context. This unit has strong links to our work on addition and subtraction.
Something worth noting is that in year 2 there is no expectation that your children use a decimal point when discussing money. E.g £2.42 would be written as £2 and 42p instead.
Geography
We will be looking at the route Amy Johnson took from Croydon to Darwin. We will also be looking at some basic map symbols.
Science
We will be looking at materials and their properties this half term.
