Our learning this week…
English
Children will continue developing different aspects of our focus text ‘The Lonely Beast’. This week we will plan a story map, use this story map to write the story and then edit it.
Maths
Your child will be ordering numbers as well as develop their understanding of comparing numbers which are lesser than / greater than and equal to a given number.
Science
We will recall all the facts we have learnt about Autumn ( weather, plants, animals and birds, clothes, length of day, festivals etc..) and write a simple non-chronological report.
History
Children will continue learning about Barack Obama.
PSHE:
Anti Bullying- Children will be developing a good understanding about bullying. What is bullying? What are the types of bullying-Physical and emotional as well as how to get help when needed.
RE:
We will be talking about where Christians go to worship- Church. What can we see inside a church?
PE:
We will be learning some dance movements and show them how to move in different ways using the beat/rhythm of song.
Music:
We will be learning Christmas play songs.

Week Beginning 3rd December 2018
In Waterloo Bridge Class this week our learning will be as follows;
- In Mathematics we will continue our work on fractions learning to find equivalent fractions.
- In English we will plan and write the middle section of our story based on Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp by Phillip Pullman.
- In science we will investigate shadows.
- In topic time we will continue to research an aspect of Iron Age life of our own choice.
- In RE we will make our own Christingles.
The children will also be working hard rehearsing for our Christmas Carol Concert which is on the morning of Tuesday 18th December at St Andrew’s Church.
Southwark Week Beginning 3.12.18
Our Learning This Week:
Maths-We will be beginning a unit on measuring. This week we will focus on converting km and m before moving on to calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes.
Literacy-We will be continuing writing and editing our first person accounts as the robin from our video text-Coming Home.
Science-We will be continuing our topic on teeth and the digestive system. This week we will be designing and carrying out our own enquiry about tooth decay.
Topic-We will be continuing our topic on Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, focusing on comparing and contrasting Saxon, Viking and modern day everyday life e.g. religion, cultural traditions and crime
and punishments.
Other information
Devil Emoji group won our marble competition with an impressive 234 marbles this week! Merit cards were given to Emiliana, Daisy, Evie and Mariah. Richa is our reader of the week. Well done!

Writing
We will be writing newspaper reports based on the story of the Pied Piper
Spelling Punctuation And Grammar (SPAG)
we are looking at direct and reported speech and also use of the passive and active voice in writing.
Reading
We are continuing to read Holes by Louis Suchar.
I cannot stress how crucial it is for development of all areas of literacy ,that the children be reading from the high quality age appropriate fiction and non fiction books we have available in school. We expect a book to be completed within a two week period.
Maths
This week we will be adding and subtracting numbers with up to two decimal places.
RE
we are continuing to look at the Nativity story and will be using our storyboards to recount the story as a fully developed writing activity using the year 6 writing success criteria.
Science
We continue to investigate electrical circuits using the associated symbols.
Important information
Friday 30 November is a Mufti day if children bring in a bottle of something for the tombola. Alcohol is permitted
Week Beginning 26th November
This week:
- In Maths we will continue our unit on fractions, we will be counting in tenths and starting to find fractions of amounts.
- In English we will plan and write the beginning part of Aladding and the Enchanted Lamp.
- In Science we will be doing an experiment on shadows and looking at whether different materials are opaque, translucent or transparent.
- In History we will write a fact sheet on a Bronze Age civilisation based on the research we conducted last week.

This week, we shall be continuing to look at the formal method for multiplication.
English:
This week, we shall be continuing our unit, film reviews. We shall be writing a review, based on our recent trip to the cinema to watch Hotel Transylvania 3!
SPAG:
We shall be continuing to look at punctuating bullet points correctly.
Reading:
We have started our new class book, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Children are more than welcome to purchase a copy to read along in class.
In Year 5, children are responsible for changing their own books independently. We do ask that children read at home everyday and mark this by a simple comment in their homework diary. Please do encourage your child to read aloud, even though they are in Year 5, to build the stamina with their fluency.

PE:
Our PE lessons will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit on these days.
Music:
Soundstart lessons, with Mr Regan, shall start this week. This is where Year 5 pupils will have the chance to learn both the guitar and keyboard.
RE:
Mrs Forde will continue to teach the children all about Christianity on Wednesday afternoons.
Computing:
We shall be looking at word processing skills and how to use features to write a newspaper report.
French:
We shall be looking at the unit of pets this week, As-tu un animal? We shall be completing a listening exercise and starting to round off the topic!
History:
We shall be continuing to look at key events in the history of Ancient Greece.
PSHE:
We shall have a visit from the local Fire Brigade on Monday 26th November. In this session, we shall learn all about how to be safe around fire.

This week’s learning
LITERACY
Book Focus: Aliens love underpants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort
The children will love this charming and funny story about alien creatures from another planet who are fascinated by human underpants! This delightful story will stimulate their imagination and create a stimulus for our learning this week.
Phonics: This week the children will begin to learn to blend the sounds they have learnt thus far. This will support them to be able to decode simple consonant-vowel-consonant (cvc) words such as m-a-t, p-o-t, t-u-g, g-e-t, p-i-n.
We will continue to teach the remaining letter sounds in the new term when the children are more confident with speedy recognition of the sounds they have learnt thus far: /s/a/t/p/i/n/m/d/g/c/k/u/e/r/h/b/f/l
The children have also learnt that /ck/ff/ll/ss are digraphs (two letters which make one sound)
Your child will bring home a list of words to decode. Please keep these at home and practise daily decoding.
MATHS:
- To begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding
- To find the total number of items in two groups by counting all of them.
- To count on to find the answer when adding two single-digit numbers using quantities and objects
- To say the number that is one more than a given number.
