Week Beginning 7th January 2019

Welcome back in our first week of the Spring term! The year four team would like to say a huge thank you for all our wonderful Christmas cards and gifts and sincerely hope you have all had an enjoyable couple of weeks.

 

What are we learning this week?

Maths – Recapping and completing our learning about perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes.

English – We will be using a poem For Forest by Grace Nichols to start our term’s topic on Rainforest and Deforestation,

Science – We shall be revising our key facts from our teeth and digestion unit before moving onto Solids, liquids and gases.

Computing – We shall be looking at Online Safety, specifically how to stay safe whilst online gaming.

Happy New Year and welcome back after what I sincerely hope was a restful and enjoyable holiday,

 

This week we will be studying  these subjects.

 

Maths, place value in  5-7 digit numbers

English  we shall be looking at the Diary of Anne Frank to enhance our biography writing  .

Topic We will be starting to look at The Evacuation in WW2

Welcome back! We hope you all had an enjoyable break over the Christmas holidays.

 

What are we learning this week?

Maths – Recapping on formal methods of multiplication and division.

English – Using a picture stimulus as a writing prompt for our new unit. We shall be using the 5 senses and figurative language to build tension to a mystery story.

Science – We shall be revising our key facts from our Space topic.

Computing – We shall be looking at Online Safety, specifically the symptoms of video game addicition.

Reading – We are hoping to finish our class novel, Wonder, within the next two weeks.

History – We shall be writing an innovation of Pandora’s Box, set in modern times.

 

Key dates –

31st January – Trip to Polka Theatre. Please make sure that you have paid and returned the permission slip by 11th January.

SPRING TERM 1

TOPIC: Transport

LITERACY:

Book Focus: The Naughty Bus by Jan and Jerry Oke

The children will enjoy this delightful story about a little toy London bus which will stir their imagination as they explore their own ideas for where the bus could travel to next.

Phonics: This term the children will work in smaller groups to learn Phonics at the pace at which they are making progress. There will be 3 groups taught by different members of the Reception Team. Each of the groups will bring home different Phonics homework which matches their learning during group Phonics lessons.

MATHS: This term we focus on securing number skills within 0-10. This week we will focus on:

  • Numeral recognition and formation using number formation rhymes
  • Skills for counting reliably with 10
  • Number facts for numbers within 10

TOPIC – Knowledge and Understanding of the World :  This week we introduce our ‘Transport‘ topic and find out what the children already know about this topic and discuss different types of transport and the different ways children travel to and from school.  [/dropshadowbox]

READING BOOKS

Please continue to send in reading books and diaries on group days

WORD LISTS

The children will receive their first key word lists, Kangaroo words, this week. Please help your child to read these words and help them to learn the routine of placing their word list wallet in the green homework box when they are ready to be checked.

Word lists will mostly be checked on group days but if your child is ready to have their words check on any other day please leave them in the green box. Please note that during busy periods we may not be able to check all words on the same day.

Week Beginning 7th January 2019

Welcome back to everyone after the Christmas break and a Happy New Year.

This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will learn to tell the time to the nearest minute using analogue and digital clocks.
  • In English we will learn about the features of a non-chronological report.
  • In science we will begin a new topic on rocks and soil.
  • In topic time we will learn about the causes of volcanoes.
  • In RE we will begin a new interfaith unit on Why We Should Care For Our World. We will start by looking at what we would include in our perfect world.

This term outdoor PE will take place every Tuesday (weather permitting) and indoor PE each Friday. Children should have suitable kit in school (including plimsolls or trainers).

In Spring Term our new context is called

‘Now you see me, now you don’t’ and it is about Space especially focusing on the ‘Moon’.                       

This is related to exploring space in Science as well as learning about significant people who has made a contribution to world history – our focus is on Neil Armstrong. We will also be learning about classification of animals in science – mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians etc..

Our learning for the Week beginning 7th January, 2019

English

After our long holiday, we will be planning, writing and editing ‘recounts’. We will also use animations to generate children’s understanding of media stories and how they have a beginning, middle and end with a series of significant events. Children will be introduced to comics and begin to develop an appreciation of  how stories can be presented in a range of ways.

Mathematics

Children will continue to explore measures – length, weight, time and will be carrying out practical work using a range of everyday resources.

Science

We will continue our learning about Seasons focusing on Winter – weather, clothes, plants / animals, length of day and night… and begin to explore space.

PSHE

Children will revisit the 5 C’s and what makes a good friend. We will continue to have a discussion about ‘ People who help us’ in the wider community.

ICT

Children will learn about e-safety and how to get help when necessary.

P.E.

Children will be learning about control and how to develop ball skills – chest pass, over arm throw, under arm throw etc…

Maths-We will be learning about the 24 hour clock as well as co-ordinates with a Christmas feel to them.

English-We will be completing our peer assessment of the diary entry from the Pied Piper’s perspective

Science-We will be learning a lot this week to do with circuits.  We will create parallel and series circuits, we will learn how a circuit works, we will learn the scientific symbols for drawing circuits as well as create our own investigation to discover what affects the brightness of a bulb.

Week beginning 17th December 2018

This week:

  • In mathematics we continue to work on telling the time to the nearest five minutes.
  • In English we will write the end of our Aladdin stories. We will make our stories into a book.
  • In RE we will learn about Christmas symbolism.
  • In Design and Technology we are sewing using binca fabric.

A reminder that our Christmas performance is at St. Andrews Church on Tuesday 18th at 10am. We will be going to the church on Monday afernoon for a rehearsal.

I have written a list so children can chose what they would like to bring so we have a variety of food and snacks. Children are allowed to wear their own clothes on Wednesday.[/dropshadowbox]

Week beginning Monday 17th December

Writing

We will be using a picture as a stimulus for our writing this week. We hope that the children will be able to use all of the vocabulary and grammar that has been embedded in our learning from last week to write a narrative.

Reading

We will be finishing reading The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl.

Maths

We will be continuing our work on multiplication and division. This week we will be making mulitplication sentences using pictures. We are building on the idea of recognising equal groups. For example if there are three equal groups with 2 in each group then we would say there are 3 x 2 (three groups of two). We will also be using arrays to represent multiplication number sentences.

History

We will be making information booklets about Florence Nightingale based on what we have learnt so far.

Reminder

Class Christmas parties will be taking place on Wednesday 19th. We have decided to ask for a voluntary contribution of 50p for each child. We are then going to get a range of food etc that the children have suggested. We believe this will reduce the amount of food that is wasted and make things easier for you! Thanks. 🙂
