Maths – This week in maths, we shall be learning the following:

I can read, write and order decimals.

I can round decimals with two places.

I can multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.

I can solve problems with decimals (up to 3 places).

English – We shall be finishing our new topic, Travel Brochures. We will be designing, writing and creating our travel guides.

Science – We shall be finishing our lifecycle unit this week with a plant exaperiment.

Computing – We shall be creating a quiz this week, on Scratch!

Reading – We shall be writing our book review for Room 13, by Robert Swindells. Thanks to the Friends of Howard for our lovely class sets of books so that we can all read along! Image result for room 13

PE – We have swimming on Tuesdays and our PE session on Thursdays.

French – We shall be continuing to look at the weather.

Art – We shall be drawing images from photographs, based on areas around Whitby.

Geography – We shall be looking at the location of Whitby, in relation to the UK.

Music lessons will be taught by our Soundstart teacher, Mr Regan.

  • In maths we will continue adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers using the column method.
  • In English we will be planning and writing a letter.
  • In Science we will continue our work on famous scientists.

Our Learning in year four this week:

Literacy

We will be looking at writing persuasive letters focusing on formal language, complex sentences and the structure we have boxed up from the persuasive texts we have looked at together.

Maths

 We will be studying non-unit fractions, counting in fractions and recognising 10th and 100ths as decimals.

PE

We will will be  studying gymnastics and circuit training.

PHSE

In addition to year four’s CUES-ed focus,  we will be focusing  on safeguarding children using the NSPCC Let’s talk PANTS initiative . Some useful information can be found here https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/underwear-rule/.

Science

We will continue to extend our knowledge oAnimals including humans classifying vertebrates using branching databases.

Topic 

We will continue our rain forest theme with a focus on the plants which grow in the rain forest and how they can be used.

New learning

English-We will be starting to look at a new genre of writing-explanation texts and these will be linked to our Science work on The Heart.  We will also be continuing to read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Maths-We will be learning how to find the area of triangles and parallelograms

Science-We will be revising the solar system

PE-We will be learning about Boxercise and Pilates

PSHE-We will be starting our work from the NSPCC called Pantasaurus

History-We will be learning about the Blitz

R.E -We will be continuing to study Buddhism

Spanish-We will be looking at playing games in Spanish

 

Important Information

Thank you to all of the children who created ‘Books in a box’.  They were great!  It was also exciting to see all of the children who had come into school last week as a book character for World Book Day.  I hope you have all managed to exchange your token for a book.

‘Design a Lab coat’ entries need to be in asap.  If you haven’t already done so, please complete and hand in to school asap.

The children in Year 6 have a visit from a local PCSO on Thursday 21st March.  He will be talking to both classes about stop and searches and how to keep themselves safe.

Week beginning 11th March

Thank you for all of your support with World Book Day. There were some fantastic costumes and books in boxes. You can see a wide selection of these displayed in the school hall!

Writing

The children had so many ideas for their alien booklets that we have only just finished writing them! Therefore, we will be starting our work on the losing tale Monkey Puzzle this week. Please see the blog post from last week for more information!

Maths

This week we are looking at length and height using cm and m. We will be using rulers and metre rules to measure accurately. Children need to understand that a metre is always longer than a cm because it is 100x bigger. They must remember to start measuring at 0. We will be ordering and comparing measurements before moving onto using the four calculations to problem solve with measure. For example Beth has 3 pieces of ribbon which are 30cm long. How long are her pieces of ribbon altogether?

 History

We are looking at the Race to Space.

Science

We will be continuing our work on plants.

PE

We are very lucky to Archbishop Tennison students working with us again this half term!

Week Beginning 11th March

This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will begin a new unit of work on addition and subtraction. We will also take part in a carousel of exciting  maths based activities to celebrate world maths day.
  • In English we will learn about the features of letter writing before writing a letter in role.
  • In science we will find out about Albert Einstein.
  • In topic time we will plan an eyewitness account on the destruction of Pompeii.
  • In RE we will learn about Jesus and Zacchaeus the tax collector.

On Monday we will help to lead a special assembly linked to our Apple’s Friends work in PHSE.

  • In topic time we will plan an eyewitness account on the destruction of Pompeii.
  • In RE we will look at why the Bible is a special book for Christians.
