Week beginning 29th April

Welcome back after the Easter holidays! I hope you all had a restful break and are now ready for the hard climb to the end of the year.

This term is jam packed with things going on, so make sure you keep checking the class blog to keep up-to-date!

This week we will be learning:

Maths-Revision of formal written methods for all 4 operations as well as problem solving strategies

English-We will be continuing to revise strategies ready for the Reading SAT.  We will also be starting to look at a new genre of writing as well as reading continuing to read ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’.

Science-WE will be continuing to look at forces

PE-We will developing our fitness skills as well as carrying out boxercise and dance

RE-We will be looking at the story of Easter from a Christian perspective

Week Beginning 23rd April

This week our learning will be as follows.

  • In mathematics we will learn to recognise and find fractions and to use equivalent fractions.
  • In English we will learn about the features of performance poetry. We will practise performing our poems.
  • In topic time we will introduce our new topic of the Romans.
  • In science we will learn about the parts of a plant.

Now that the weather is warmer it is important that children have a water bottle in school each day.  Juice or squash should not be brought to school.

Week beginning 23rd April

Welcome back! With bank holidays etc this is a shorter but jam packed half term!

We will be doing our Year 2 SATs on the week beginning 20th May.

The SATs consist of five papers:

  • A short reading paper (small amounts of text with questions underneath).
  • A longer reading paper with texts and a separate answering booklet)
  • A maths reasoning paper
  • A maths calculating paper (addition/ subtraction/ multiplication/ division and finding fractions of amounts).
  • An optional SPaG paper (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) which tests the children’s understanding of spelling rules and grammatical features. They should know the different word classes (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs etc). It may also include contraction spellings (can’t, wouldn’t etc), apostrophes for possession (Tony’s ball), different sentence types (exclamations, statements, commands and questions), prefixes (un/ dis/ pre/ sub etc), suffixes (ness, ment, ful, ly etc) and basic demarcation of sentences.

Writing

The last week before half term was incredibly busy and we ran out of time to make a good start on our diary entries. We will be spending the first week back recapping the key events of the moon landing and considering how Neil Armstrong and his fellow astronauts would have felt.

We will also be looking at the features of a diary entry before moving on to writing our own.

Maths

On our first day back we will be completing an assessment on time.

We will then be moving onto our new unit: statistics.

We will be looking at tally charts, pictograms and block diagrams.

History

Science

Our new topic is all about animals and habitats. We will be looking at how humans keep healthy as part of this unit.

PE

We will be doing basket-ball this half term.

Maths – This week in maths, we shall be learning the following:

  1. I can add decimals within 1.

  2. I can subtract decimals within 1.

  3. I can find complements to 1.

  4. I can add and subtract decimals with the same amount of decimal places.

English – We shall be starting our new unit, biographies. We shall be identifying the key features of the text, editing an existing biography and giving our presentations based on our research over the Easter holiday/

Computing – We shall be finishing up typing and designing our travel brochures.

PE -There are no swimming lessons this week. Swimming resumes w/b 29th April. Please ensure PE kits are in school.

RE –We shall starting our new unit with Mrs Forde.

Geography – We shall be looking at the location of Whitby, in relation to the UK.

Music lessons will be taught by our Soundstart teacher, Mr Regan.

Welcome back to school! We hope you enjoyed your Easter holidays. School starts again on Tuesday 23rd April at 8.50am.

We are hoping for more gloriously sunny weather this term so please take note of the weather report daily to ensure that your child comes to school appropriately dressed for the weather.

The children may wear their Summer uniforms when the weather is warmer – summer dresses or school shorts. Also, please ensure your child has a suitable sunhat or cap and sunscreen must be applied before they arrive at school.

Of course, don’t forget about those rainy days too.

SUMMER TERM 1 TOPIC: Caring for Animals

LITERACY: Book Focus: Non- Fiction books about Animals

Just when you thought Easter was behind you and talk of eggs was a thing of the past, we have gone ‘eggstremely’ crazy about eggs this term. The children will be learning about different animals that lay eggs and we are incredibly ‘eggcited’ about the arrival, early next week, of some mysterious eggs, which we hope will successfully hatch into some kind of animal. We will have to wait and see….

Phonics: Group Phonics will resume this week, reviewing previous sounds and focusing on speedy blending of cvc and multisyllabic words

MATHS: This week we will focus on counting by grouping objects and step counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10

PE: Please send in PE kits. As the weather improves the children may wear shorts for PE so please ensure these are in their PE kits. [/dropshadowbox]

Our Learning for this week…

English

We will be focusing on -Recount writing about Easter Holidays. On Tuesday and Wednesday we will be planning, writing and editing our recount writing. Then on Thursday we will be discussing about our holiday homework -how to grow board bean plant, sequencing photographs and discussion about the key features of an instructions. By Friday we will be focusing on writing and editing instructions.

Maths

We will revisit and continue Place value and children will be using a range of resources – Ten frame, Part-Part Whole, Base 10 to develop a deeper understanding of tens and units,

Science

Children will observe seasonal changes ‘Spring’ and describe weather patterns and understand how day length varies.

Geography

Children will name, locate and identify characteristics of the 4 countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas on Maps-Atlas work.

P.E

Gymnastics- Children will be learning to travel, balance and sequence movements.

PSHE

SEAL- Good to be me. Children will be talking about how to promote happy healthy frindship.
