Millennium
Week commencing 30th October
Welcome back! I hope you had a lovely half term!
Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:
English- We will be starting a new unit about Robin Hood and reading a version by Marcia Williams. Alongside this we will be looking at fronted adverbial phrases.
Maths- We are recapping work on column addition from Year 3 before moving on to calculations involving 4 digit numbers and addition problem solving activities.
Spelling- Our focus this week in class is the suffix sion. We will be thinking of as many words as we can such as mission and practising our spelling using methods such as speed spelling and hangman.
Reading- All children read with an adult at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme. After this adult led session they complete tasks relating to the text or linked to current English and Spelling focuses. We continue to read stories as a class.
ICT- We are still holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.

PE- PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and children will need their PE kits. I would also like to remind you that the school policy is that all earrings should be removed, hair should be tied back and tights should be removed when getting changed. I would also ask that PE kits stay in school between Monday and Friday as occasionally we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in additional activities. This half term we will be learning Pilates and will continue to run the daily mile.
RE- We will be studying Judaism with a focus on Jewish celebrations. This unit will be taught by Mrs Adams on a Wednesday morning.
Science- Our current Science topic is teeth and digestion. This will also be taught by Mrs Adams.
Topic- Our topic for this term is Vikings and Anglo Saxons. This will concentrate on the period between the Viking and Anglo Saxon struggle to control Britain to the time of Edward the Confessor.
French- We will be revising our conversational skills so far and then moving on to learn the numbers between 20 and 50 and learning vocabulary to describe our families.
Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday. In addition to tasks given out I expect the children to read every day and continue to practise the multiplication tables. I will be collecting the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly. Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading. If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note.

Welcome to Year Four
The children have settled well into year 4 and we are looking forward to our first full week of teaching.
- In Mathematics lessons, we will be introducing 4 digit numbers (numbers from 1000-9999) and the thousands column, exploring and applying our understanding of place value to include thousand numbers.
- We will be starting a non-fiction unit-Explanation texts in our daily English lessons, exploring how to write in order to explain processes. We will be beginning our spelling work looking at ‘au’ and ‘augh’ words such as astronaut and naughty. Following our school policy, we will not be sending home spelling lists to learn for a test but will be learning spellings at school by looking for patterns and exploring spelling rules. We will regularly send home spelling learning consolidation homework activities as well as posting hyperlinks to good spelling games to keep you abreast of the speling expectations in our blogs
- In our topic time, we will be starting our new topic Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will be asking questions to establish what we want to learn about and what we already know.
- During Science lessons, we will be starting a unit learning about teeth and the digestive system in animals and humans.
- In PE sessions, we will be working on invasion games and circuits. After the success of our mile a day run during Health week, we will be incorporating physical exercise daily into our timetable from this week so please ensure your child always has their p.e kits at school.
It is important that your child brings their reading book and record to school every day to read during quiet reading time. Every time your child reads at home they will earn points for their class teams. The child who reads most during the week or who improves the most will be our class reader of the week and will have the class trophy to take home for the week to celebrate. Southwark’s reader of the first 3 days was Harley. Well done Harley!
Children should revise their multiplication and division facts for all times table up to 12×12 at home as this is a key requirement for year 4. There will be weekly assessments to encourage their progress.
Please come and talk to any member of our year 4 team if you have any further questions or if you would like to just come and introduce yourselves.
Week beginning 17th July 2017

We wish Mr Robinson a happy retirement but look forward to seeing him when he visits us.
On behalf of Mrs Glenn and Mrs Tooze, I would like to thank you for your continued support throughout the year. I wish each member of Millennium class a good start in Year 5.
