Phonics at Howard Primary

At Howard Primary School we believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers. To ensure this we prioritise daily Phonics lessons which are taught through the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, a systematic synthetic phonics programme validated by the Department for Education.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a comprehensive reading and writing programme which builds in progression from the first term in Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. Daily Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons for all pupils and Fast Track Phonics Tutoring for pupils who may need to keep up prepares Year 1 pupils for the statutory phonics screening check which takes place at the end of Year 1. The programme also supports any pupils in Years 3 and 4 who may need to catch up rapidly. Struggling readers in Years 5 and 6 may follow the Read Write Inc. Fresh Start programme
