Welcome to Year 2!

We are really looking forward to getting to know all of your children and helping them to achieve their full potential.

This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:

Writing

This week we are looking at recounts and writing our own independent recounts of our summer holidays.

Phonics/ SPaG

We are recapping phase 5 alternative graphemes and spelling patterns. We will also be looking at past and present tense sentence level work e.g word classes and the basics of a perfect sentence.

Reading

We will be doing baseline reading assessments throughout the week.

Our class read is The Twits by Roald Dahl.

Maths

Our focus this half is on number and place value. We will be doing lots of work on partitioning 2-digit numbers and understanding their value. We will also be plotting 2-digit numbers on blank numberlines. We now have a big emphasis on reasoning and problem solving in every lesson.

Topic

Our topic this half term is The Circus is Coming to Town. There are many links to science, history and geography within this.

PE

PE is on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

Monday: dance.

Wednesday: fitness circuits where we will be looking at balance, agility and coordination.

RE

We will be looking at why things are special to people. This will be taught by our PPA teachers on a Thursday morning.

PSHE

We will be looking at new beginnings and settling in to a new school year.

ICT

To be confirmed.

Key information

Reading books are changed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We expect your child to read to you every evening and for this to be recorded in their reading record. You can:

  • Just sign or initial.
  • Write a comment e.g if the book was challenging, too easy, any particular words your child found difficult to read, any questions that you asked and your child’s response.

 

Homework:

 

Homework will be given out on a Thursday or Friday afternoon. We expect it to be completed the following Tuesday.

 

We will be trialling both Spellodrome and Mathletics homework for which you will be sent passwords shortly. If your child does not have access to a computer/ tablet at home then please let us know.

 

Trips

 

There are lots of exciting trips coming up this half-term. A letter will be sent home by Friday 15th September.

Our key learning objectives this week will be:

Maths- We will be recapping and consolidating time including 5 minute intervals and problem solving.

Reading- We are reading The Witches by Roald Dahl.

Writing- We will be taking inspiration from pictures from http://www.literacyshed.com/the-images-shed.html

to write our own narratives.

Science- recapping science from across the year.

Topic- Hooray! We’re going on Holiday with links to Geography- naming continents and oceans around the world and understanding weather around the world.

History- comparing holidays from the past to those now.

PE- On Mondays: dance with Mrs Amin

On Thursdays: introducing playground games e.g. skipping, rounders

RE-Our RE topic this term is Hinduism.

Maths objectives that you could help with at home:

  • Discussing properties of 2 and 3D shapes e.g. corners & sides (2D) and vertices, faces and edges (3D).
  • Finding symmetry and pattern in the world around you.
  • Practicing telling the time to the 5 minute interval and looking at how much time has passed.
  • Making the same amount e.g. £1, £5, £10 using different values of coins and notes.
  • Beginning to partition 3-digit numbers e.g. 153=100+50+3
  • Calculating with addition & subtraction over and back across 100.

SPaG objectives that you could help with at home:

  • Spelling words with –el, -le, -il and –al endings e.g. camel, table, pencil, oval
  • Spelling words ending in –tion e.g. station, mention
  • Understanding the rule of dropping the /y/ and adding –ies when pluralising e.g. baby- babies, city- cities
  • Using suffixes at the ends of words e.g. happily, engagement, plentiful and talking about the spelling rules
  • Adding adverbs to verbs e.g. walked slowly, smiled happily
  • Using different sentence types in writing; most importantly questions & exclamations
