English – Writing

On Monday the children will be introduced to similes.  Similes compare one thing to another using ‘like’ or ‘as’.  We will encourage the children to create powerful pictures using their words.

 

 

The children will be using similes to describe features of Autumn. Example – the rain fell like diamonds form the darkening sky.

On Tuesday the children will write their cinquain poem about Autumn.

On Thursday and Friday, the children will gather ideas for their recount and they will study the features of a recount.

The children will be writing recounts about their cinema visit, the author visit and their Autumn walk.

English- reading
We will start a new book called The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl. We will also be learning some new reading skills as a whole class using ERIC. The children will build their repertoire of different reading skills through the year.
When reading with your child, please use VIPERS when asking them questions on the book they are reading.

Maths  We have moved on to money.

    • To count money in pounds
    • To count money with notes and coins
    • to select the correct money
    • to make the same amount using different notes and coins
    • To count money in pounds
    • Children will use their knowledge of counting in pence to help them. They will recognise it is not the amount of coins you have but the value of the coins. Children will be encouraged to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.
    • To count money with notes and coins
      We will teach the children to count notes and coins together and we use the expression ten pound and 23 pence. We do not introduce children to decimals yet.
    • To select the correct money.
      Children will be given numerous items to buy and they need to select the right amount of money to buy the items.
    • To make the same amount using different notes and coins
      Children will develop their understanding of different ways to make the same amount. The children will begin to see that 10p can be made using 2p, 2p, 2p, 2p and 2p or it can be made using 5p and 5p.
Science
In science, children will learn more about John McAdam as a person who invented new material (John McAdam)
ICT
Our ICT slot is on Tuesday afternoon. This week we will continue to explore programming. We are the programmers of the future!
History

Florence Nightingale will be introduced to the children. The children we be shown several pictures of Florence Nightingale and then they will answer questions to help them get an understanding of her life.

The children will answer questions such as who do you think this woman is. Does her uniform tell you about her job? Why is she special? etc

Music 
Ministrings will continue every Wednesday. This week we will play some instruments that belong in the string family.
PE
Our PE slot is on Monday afternoon. We are currently focusing on balance and co-ordination.
Please ensure all children have their full PE kit in school (fully named).
PSHE
We have introduced the children to a programme called Zones of Regulation which we are hoping will help regulate feelings and emotions and offer the children the correct way to talk about their feelings. This week  we will continue to  think of suitable ways to regulate their feelings and match emotions to different zones.

Tuesdsay 12th November 2019 – BFI Peter Rabbit at VUE Purley Way

English – Writing

On Monday the children will up level their sentences about Autumn. Up levelling is a process by which the children improve their sentences.
Children can up level their sentences by using adventurous adjectives, creating and tone and using similes. On Tuesday the children will create interesting sound effects using their knowledge of onomatopoeia.

On Thursday, the children will be creating powerful pictures with their words.  On Friday the children will plan an Autumn poem using their knowledge of Autumn.

English- reading
