SPRING TERM 2 TOPIC: Traditional Tales

LITERACY:

Book Focus: The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The children have enjoyed role playing this delightful tale and have been captivated by the troll character so this week we will explore this character in more detail.

GROUP PHONICS:

Miss Pillay and Miss Benoit’s groups: New digraphs qu/ch/th/sh/ng/ and blending to read cvc words containing these sounds

Miss Dale’s group: Revise recognition of /sh/ch/th/qu/ng/ai/ee/igh/oo/ar/or/ur/ow/oi/ within words.                                       

Miss Thompson’s groups: Revise recognition of /sh/ch/th/qu/ng/ai/ee/igh/oo/ar/or/ur/ow/oi/ within words and learn new Phase 3 long vowel sounds /ear/air/ure/er/

MATHS: Explore the concepts of addition and subtraction through a range of practical activities and develop an understanding of when to add and when to subtract quantities in real life situations. Here are a few useful videos to practise skills for addition and subtraction:

We have been reading the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. At the end of the story the troll who lived under the bridge was never seen again. What do you think happened to the troll? Where did he go? What did he do next? Why did he never come back to live under the bridge again? Draw a picture and write your own sentences about what you think happened to the troll.

The children will read and recall the main events of this entertaining traditional tale. We will explore descriptive language to write descriptions of the characters.

Group Phonics:

Miss Pillay and Miss Benoit’s groups: We will revise /j/v/y/w/x/z/ and blending to read cvc words containing these sounds

Miss Dale and Miss Thompson’s groups: We will revise the recognition of these sounds within words /sh/ch/th/qu/ng/ai/ee/igh/oo/ar/or/. The children  will also learn new long vowel sounds /ur/ow/oi/

MATHS: This week we will focus on the language of subtraction eg less, fewer, take away, minus, subtract [/dropshadowbox]

My own Gingerbread story

We have been using our imagination to create a new adventure for the Gingerbread man. What adventure do you think he could he have next if he escaped from the fox? Where would he go? What would he do? Who would he meet? Draw a picture and write a few sentences about Gingerbread man’s next adventure.
