Book Focus: a range of non-fiction books about the weather in different seasons

• We will talk about different types of weather, exploring related vocabulary and developing their understanding of the four seasons.

• The children will continue to monitor the growth of their plants, taking responsibility for caring for them and making observations of any changes.

• The children have really enjoyed discussing the changes in themselves as they have grown up. Thank you for sending in their baby photos. Please take some time to read our class display about this, in the hallway.

• In Maths we will review counting in 2’s and explore practical activities which require this skill eg. counting 2p coins, pairs of items such as shoes, socks, etc [/dropshadowbox]

TOPIC: Summer’s here!

This week’s themes: Growing

Book Focus: a range of non-fiction books about plant, animal and human growth

CROSS CURRICULAR LEARNING:

This week we will continue to explore cross curricular learning using our book focus as stimulus for discussion:

• We will talk about what we can do when we grow up, discussing different jobs that people do and how these jobs help other people.

• The children have each grown a bean seed and will continue to care for their seed as it grows into a plant, making observations of any changes as it grows

• Maths learning will focus on reviewing children’s understanding of addition and subtraction, exploring the concepts of ‘more’ and ‘less’

• In preparation for our various trips this term we will talk about road safety as well as the importance of caring for books. [/dropshadowbox]

PHONICS:

The children continue to work in groups for Phonics securing their recognition of Phase 3 sounds and skills for blending decodable words accurately. Phonics lessons also focus on teaching children the skills for reading and writing simple sentences. Some of the groups have started learning the Phase 4 skills for reading words containing 4 or more sounds.

READING AT SCHOOL:

During guided group reading sessions the children are working on key skills for reading such as finger pointing under each word to keep track of words; using picture clues and sound blending to decode unfamiliar words. We are also assessing children’s understanding of what they have read. We will also encourage children to use their ‘storyteller voice’ when they read, using expression and taking notice of basic punctuation such as full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.

READING AT HOME

Please continue to write a comment in your child’s yellow reading diary and let us know how they are getting on with their reading at home. Please ensure that books are in book bags on the days listed below.

KEY WORD LISTS and CHANGING READING BOOKS:

We change books and check key words on these days:

Monday – Red group

Tuesday – Orange group

Wednesday – Yellow group

Thursday – Green group

Friday – Blue group [/dropshadowbox]
